it’s not easy to hold onto a thing like you. So many long heavy screws to fasten the eye plates to the walls, to give me someplace to lock your chain. So many bars and bits and pieces to assemble your cage. The sensors that set off your shocker need to be placed and calibrated. Feet of chain and rope and tape need to be sorted and stored and maintained. My whips, paddles, and crops need to be put away but always close at hand. The leather of your collar should be conditioned and the metal of your cuffs polished.

I’m sure you’d do it well. Of course youd try to be incompetent at first. Why properly screw in a padlock anchor when you’re hoping to unscrew it later? there’s two potential ways I’d like a pet to behave.

There’s the hazy-eyed drugged-out empty thing, who lives in a foggy world in its own mind. Comfortable and sleepy. Docile and sedated. Kept calm by its own fuzzy mind and memories. It doesn’t know it deserves better. It doesn’t know it’s been dehumanized or even was once a human. On some level it knows it’s being kept, but the idea of resisting is so distant and uncomfortable that it’s just easier to stay in the cage, no matter how secure it actually is. This pet barely feels the pain, jolting it only momentarily from its haze.

Then there’s the clear-eyed, pissed-off but entirely broken pet. It knows exactly what’s been done to it. It knows it’s been degraded and dehumanized. It knows what it once was, knows it doesn’t deserve that treatment, and would bark and bite if it still believed it would help. It’s docile because it’s given up, but that doesn’t mean it accepts it. It does what it needs to do to survive. Maybe it fears me, but it will protect me anyway. The life it had is gone, the option to get away is gone, and it will at least fight to keep what it has, no matter how much it hates it, hates me for what I’ve done to it.

I’ve kept you empty for a long time now. I’ve let you be hazy and sleepy. But I miss those wild, angry eyes. So you’re gonna come out of your calm and foggy world, okay? I’m going to make you realize what I did to you.

I tend to understand it as an eroticism of the fawn response. Say it in the right tone and add enough pressure and you immediately comply. Survival instinct. For just the one moment, you don't need to do anything but go along with it. You'll take account of what you have left after it's over. And in that way, I imagine you almost just want this to go on forever. So you never have to worry about what comes after, and can just forever be my toy. It'd be easier than the alternative.

From my end, I quite like the power fantasy of compelling obedience.

Explaining how it thinks it feels and how it's struggling to know how it feels. It's just so unsure and it doesn't know what it wants. Maybe it doesn't even think it wants this, it's concerned and worried and anxious. And, in the first place, it's not like I really have any power over it. It doesn't have to do anything I say and so it doesn't really matter what I have to say because it can do whatever it wants.

Then in a gentle but commanding voice I tell it to tell me that it really likes being here.

And it takes a few seconds. I watch it as it puts the words together. Make intentional eye contact. Just a bit of added pressure. Not speaking. Just waiting. And it manages to say it. And I smile and praise it a little.

Then I tell it to tell me that it's actually so very excited for me to tell it what to do, for me to touch it and play with it, and for it to get to be my toy.

And, a little bit faster with each order and more confident in its responses, it repeats each thing I tell it to say. Stumbling between them, looking away from me, and occasionally rubbing its knees together and making cute little noises.

And then maybe I tell it to hold still, or maybe I tell it to lean in, or maybe I don't even touch it and just tell it what to do each step of the way. But I get to do whatever I want with it, and it gets to do exactly what I tell it to. And that's quite lovely.
