Paint by numbers // Logan & Derrick
derrickcoriander:
Derrick had woken up that morning feeling like he was on top of the world. The sun shining through his window. The birds were chirping away outside. There was a spring in his step all through the day. The reason? He had a date. He had a date with Logan freaking Rosenrutt and he was beyond excited that he could hardly sit still throughout the day. He was waiting, waiting, waiting for the clock to chime 6pm. He had to stop himself multiple times from texting Logan and asking to see him earlier. It was probably insane that he was so eager to see the other man again. They, after all, had only spent one night at a club together, but Derrick liked Logan’s energy. It was addicting and fun. The man was a breath of fresh air and he longed for more. He could feel Logan’s energy and knew he wanted more as well.
But the last thing he wanted was to come off as desperate.
So he thought back the eagerness. He fought the urge to text Logan and meet earlier than they had planned. He found small things to do around his apartment to distract himself and keep himself busy. He worked on an assignment. He cleaned the dishes. He scrubbed the shower until his fingers were raw and then spelled the soreness away. Then he took the hottest bath he possible could have and started to mentally and physically prepare for his date
4:00pm.
He stood in front of his closest, one hand on his hip and the other hand rubbing his chin. The cool air chilled his skin and goosebumps erupted down his arms and legs. A black, silk bathrobe hung loosely over his body. He tapped at his chin as he looked over every piece of clothing he owned. Nothing seemed impressive enough or good enough for his date. He wanted to dazzle but not too much that it was a lot to handle right off the bat. He needed something that complimented him and worked. Something that would make Logan take a second or third glance at him.
He…needed…
“Ah-ha!” Derrick pulled the muted green striped turtle neck from his closet and laid it out on his bed for a second look. This would work. This would definitely work. It was his favorite turtleneck. Comfy yet practical. It hugged him all of the right places and even brought out the color of his eyes. It was cozy yet date worthy. And most importantly, it would wow Logan. Just what he wanted.
5:45pm.
Derrick had arrived early. He couldn’t help himself. If being so eager made him desperate then he didn’t care. He watched from across the pond as Logan set up for their date. The only information the other had given him was where they were meeting and what time. No other details were provided but it seemed that Logan definitely had a creative plan for the evening and Derrick was excited for what was to come. He watched as Logan set up two canvases and spread out the food and wine for them. It was touching to see someone put so much thought and care into spending an evening with him.
He basically skipped over to Logan with a wide smile. What could be better than a hot man, white wine, food, and painting? Nothing. This was everything. He was speechless at how well thought out this was. Speechless that Logan had taken the time to plan all of this for him. He was floored. Impressed. Wildly excited he could barely contain himself. “Hey handsome,” Derrick called out in greeting and reaching a hand out to catch Logan’s shoulder. He could feel the other’s energy and was happy to note that Logan felt the same way Derrick did. Maybe it was cheating but he couldn’t help but dive a little bit deeper into the other. “Looks like you have a whole ass evening planned…” He squeezed the other shoulder and then pulled him into a tight hug. “I have to say I’m impressed with what I see..”
There was something missing still. His eyes scanned over the spread and his tongue began to click as he cycled through a number of things that could have been better about what he’d done already. Logan’s brow began to furrow in doubt but his eyes closed and he drew in a deep breath. On the exhale he’d pushed each negative thought out of his mind and let his eyes open slowly and he took everything in again. Without thinking, his hand raised and his wand began to spell out an assortment of lanterns to illuminate the space should their date last longer than he had planned. While tucking the wand away, Logan stepped back from it and took it in once again. This is good.
Another sip from his glass and he was ready. And apparently his timing was damn near perfect because the next thing he knew he heard that familiar voice. The one he’d been waiting for all day. The smile spread on his face before he’d even turned to greet Derrick. He looks good. The closer he came, his scent drifted towards Logan and he knew tonight was going to be special. “Hi yourself.” He spat out quickly as he’d closed in on their space for the evening.
He couldn’t help the swell in his chest as Derrick pulled him in. Not just because they were touching but because he genuinely felt as though he’d done a decent job. At least that was what he felt from the other’s reaction. Logan wrapped his arms around the other and returned the squeeze happily. “I have to admit I’m not too keen on sitting still so I thought we could move around.” Breathe. He exhaled slowly to pull back and look at his date for the evening. The green really looked quite dashing on his skin and he couldn’t deny the way those eyes were twinkling just a little damn near floored him into speechlessness. “Here ...” He gestured back towards the blanket, carefully holding onto the glass as he kicked off his shoes before stepping onto it himself. “Sit and I’ll get you something to drink.” His need to please was going into overdrive and he knew it but at least he could push this one under the guise of it being their first date.
Logan dropped down onto his knees and exchanged his glass for the other and the bottle of wine. He flashed a toothy grin to the other as he started to pour in the contents. “H-how was your ... day?” He asked, glancing back at Derrick briefly and then back to the glass, realizing he’d poured a little too much in. A slight twinge of pink touched the tops of his cheeks as he’d handed over the glass to him and then poured a little more in his own. “I ... I don’t think I asked what you were here for or ... well, I guess that’s a little of why we’re here.” His lips pressed together and a soft nervous laugh escaped between them before he’d shushed it back with a sip from his glass. His nerves were really something. Not in a bad way, no this was in a good way.
“Sorry, I guess I’m just a little excitable today.” Logan finally found a comfortable spot and adjusted himself to give Derrick his full attention. “Please,” He cheeks still rosy but his smile a little softer and relaxed. “Tell me what a day in the life is like for you.” His legs crossed over and he’d rested his arms on either knee, hands hanging between and he let himself just be in the moment. If he thought much past this he feared it’d be detrimental to his chances at seeing this man again. There were some things that needed to be done, on his part, if it was going to go past tonight. I want it to.
