why did you people come up with russian names for what is supposed to be a movie set in italy. what was the thought process here. why does she sound like she walked out of a tolstoy novel
an insane response, but i can't fight this. carry on
Very important to also remember that this movie was made during Détente. The casual mixing of Italian and Russian culture is at the core of the movie, meant as a reflection of real world geopolitics between Italy and Russia, and the unease of old enemies trying to become friends.
A few have noted Scorsese's apparent reactionary leanings in this film; and fair, it's easy to interpret the overall theme of the title character losing his personality as the two cultures interact. Certainly, the awkward love triangle is clearly mirroring US-Russian-Italian relations in the Cold War. But note that almost all of his troubles do not come from trusting an outsider, but trusting the wrong outsider at the wrong time.
Had Goncharov held his passions in as he was encouraged towards bloodsport by his new allies the cycle of revenge would not have continued. He gets attacked at a supposed neutral meeting, but only because he didn't listen to a third party that knew it was a trap (and, also, because he let a petty grievance of traditional honor "force" him into clear over-retaliation, jeez dude they were just shoes)
His hometown-girl-who's-also-traditional-values isn't some clear and shining light; She spends half the movie convincing Goncharov to get into dumber and dumber trouble. She has one important moment of ignored warning, but she also has a lot of blood on her hands for adding fuel to the fire.
Someone trained him well.

> the Vietnamese
> that country
It's like you don't even pretend to view Vietnamese People as human
America killed 3 million Vietnamese people, we put half of South Vietnam in Concentration Camps, we dropped more bombs on North Vietnam than were dropped by both sides in WW2, We permeantly poisoned the land with Agent Orange, the American war on Vietnam was the most inhuman and despicable action in this nations history, the Vietnamese had every right to do whatever they wanted to the occupation
When you learn what the US soldiers did to the Vietnamese, you'll never stop praying for the death of America.
Just say Nice Cock Bro and move on with your day
