Je me souviens. Adieu Montréal
November 26, 2015
… "I’ve learned my lesson by now I hope. Or one of them. If things aren’t happening between two people, they’re just not happening, and no amount of games or mental gymnastics or timing or pounding your fists at someone’s door will get you to the destination you think you should arrive at. And you can’t recreate a perfect trip."
The past year would make a hell of a novel. Here is one of the least interesting bits.
I was on the couch in the living room in my old house on High Park Avenue waiting for a phone call from Ottawa that was to determine my short-term political future. I was reading The Guardian, flipping through stories about the then-UK deputy prime minister and his wife, replete with photos of the two of them decked out in conspicuous shades of yellow and I sat there thinking — when will I meet my Miriam Gonzalez Durantez?
The next day I was single for the first time in 7 years but it wasn’t because of that.
“For what it’s worth: it’s never too late or, in my case, too early to be whoever you want to be. There’s no time limit, stop whenever you want. You can change or stay the same, there are no rules to this thing. We can make the best or the worst of it. I hope you make the best of it. And I hope you see things that startle you. I hope you feel things you never felt before. I hope you meet people with a different point of view. I hope you live a life you’re proud of. If you find that you’re not, I hope you have the courage to start all over again.”
