My unpopular opinion is that if a job isn't worth paying a livable wage for, that job isn't worth having. Let me elaborate.

If a janitorial job isn't worth paying a living wage, your company clearly doesn't need a janitor. Eliminate that position.

If the dude dropping the fries at McDonalds isn't making enough to live, then McDonalds clearly doesn't need fry guys.

If someone mowing lawns for a landscaping company isn't making enough to live, then that company doesn't need a lawn mowing guy.

And let's see how quickly companies change their tunes, if they were forced to eliminate positions based on pay in relation to cost of living. Obviously McDonalds needs someone to do the fries, obviously companies need janitors, obviously land scaping companies need people to mow the lawns. They're a major part of the success of the business. Can you imagine if McDonalds stopped serving fries because they didn't want to pay someone to make them? Or if hotels just eliminated their housekeeping team rather than pay them more? How quickly would things go to shit?

These positions ARE necessary, the work doesn't get done properly without them. So companies should be obligated to pay them properly or eliminate the position.

In like 2008 or around there, among discussions of minimum wage, I (12ish) asked my dad why raising minimum wage wouldn't just result in companies employing fewer people for the same amount of work, because I had heard people being concerned about that. He said, "They already employ as few people as they can to get the job done. You think companies are currently employing and paying more workers than they need to? No."
