Herman Miller collection, 1948.
Berlin c1900. This is the left-hand frame of a Keystone stereo view, published in the USA, of the old Berliner Schloss and its surroundings. There is commentary on the back which says that the Kaiser is no longer in residence in the Schloss, so must date from after World War One in the 1920s. The view was obviously taken some time before that war, with the predominance on the streets of horse-drawn traffic, and the historical fashions worn by the pedestrians. A more precise dating can be inferred from the roofline of the Opera House on Unter den Linden top right. This has yet to be given its ‘fly-tower’, or ‘hohe Bühnenhaus’, which was added in 1910.
The book I consulted for information on this view was ‘Unter den Linden - Photographien • Mit einem Essay von Dieter Hildebrandt’, published by Argon Verlag 1991. The stereo card itself is from my own collection.
