I do the rolling, you do the detail…
“Umm, yeah, well I mean retirement is not something I would do. I mean, my, probably greatest heroes, like Howlin’ Wolf and the stories of him are legendary at 65, climbing the velvet curtain with the microphone, you know, clutched under his arm and singing from 35ft above the stage. Ah yeah… That’s me. You know, I don’t golf… What would I retire to? It’s what I do, what I love is what I always do. So uh… Yeah.”
- Gord Downie (2009)
A little gem i unexpectedly found after ALL these years. Long live my cassette tape of Road Apples 💖💖💖
90s Gord gimme all the feels 💖
Omg! Your picture! You got to meet Gord? Sooo jelly lol. He is my idol. You are very lucky 😭❤
That show was on my 21st birthday. I waited about a half hour outside in the cold, breezy Chicago weather for the band members to come out. I met Rob and Johnny first. Paul and Gord S. went by too quick, but I knew I had to meet Gord. He’s someone I’ve looked up to for the past ten years and there are so few people that have influenced me the way he did.As Gord approached me, I was pretty nervous. There was the man I had looked up to for the past five years and he and his band had just seen put on the best show I’d ever been to. As I had hoped, Gord could not have been a nicer guy.
As he was signing my shirt, he asked, “So, you’re name’s Jacob?”
“Yeah,” I replied with the only sound that I could get out of my mouth.
He noticed the message Johnny had written. “And it’s your birthday?”
“Yeah, it is.” I could have died at that point. No other famous person encounter I’d ever have after that could even come close to being as awesome and surreal as that.
The rest of what I said is a bit of a blur, but I remember saying that I was a huge fan and thanked him for the music. I think I also said that I had waited years to see them live. He thanked me, wished me a happy birthday and then proceeded to the other fans still waiting. He was a true class act, exactly as you’d expect him to be.
This is an awesome story. Thank you so much for answering. May I ask what year this was? Makes me regret not trying to meet him. I think I would have died tbh
Gord is my soul mate 😉
Fiddler's Green
"September seventeen For a girl I know it’s Mother’s Day Her son has gone alee And that’s where he will stay The wind on the weathervane Tearing blue eyes sailor mean As Falstaff sings a sorrowful refrain For a boy in Fiddler’s Green" "His tiny knotted heart Well, I guess it never worked to good The timber tore apart And the water gorged the wood You can hear her whispered prayer For men at masts that always lean The same wind that moves her hair Moves her boy through Fiddler’s Green" "Nothing’s changed anyway Nothing’s changed anyway Any time today" "He doesn’t know a soul There’s nowhere that he’s really been But he won’t travel long alone No, not in Fiddler’s Green Balloons all filled with rain As children’s eyes turn sleepy mean And Falstaff sings a sorrowful refrain For a boy in Fiddler’s Green" - The Tragically Hip

Scared
“I could make you scared, if you want me to I’m not prepared, but if I have to… He said, I can make you scared, it’s kind of what I do. If you’re prepared, here’s what I propose to do”
“You’re in Russia and more than a million works of art, are whisked out to the woods When the Nazis find the whole place dark They’ll think God’s left the museum for good”
“I can make you scared, if that’s what I do If you’re prepared, and if I have to… If I make you scared, and you pay me to. That’s the deal, now here’s what I can do for you”
“Now there’s a focus group that can prove This is all nothing but cold calculation”
“Tests have shown that suspicious are hostile. Their lives need not be shortened Truth be told, they can live a long, long while Tickled to death by their importance”
“If you can make me scared, if that’s what you do… If I’m unclear, can I get out of this thing with me and you?”
“If you feel scared, and a bit confused I got to say, this sounds a little beyond anything I’m used to”
“Now there’s a precious few that can prove at the root. This is all nothing but cold calculation”
“Clearly entranced, you’re leaving back now Defanged destroyer limps into the bay Down at the beach it’s attracting quite a crowd, as kids wade through the blood out to it to play”
“Okay, you made me scared, you did what you set out to do. And I’m not prepared, you really had me going there for a minute or two”
“He said, you made me scared too, I wasn’t sure I was getting through I got to go, it’s been a pleasure doing business with you”
