Declan: How do people not swear??? Like where does their anger go?? How do they show their enthusiasm??? What if they stub their toe??? Like saying golly gosh isn't really going to cut it, Barbara.

Wrote a second chapter in which Declan fights the urge to go back for seconds from a girl who owns at least four different pullovers with pictures of farmyard animals on them.
(With cameos from Charles and Caitlin because theyāre both so fun to write.)

So real....

I adore Charles Fairburn. He should have had more screen time. Maybe for S2?
Honestly my favourite part of Bella Maclean's performance isn't any of the romantic parts its how many differing expressions of irritation, mortification, and confusion she can produce.
I think Taggie's a hard character to act, even if they did make her a bit more assertive, but she does a great line in basically being a straight man for everyone else in the series.
Decided to write some Declan/Daysee smut... because the idea of a post-season-one-and-newly-single Declan trying to wrap his head around wanting to shag Daysee was too fun to ignore.

FUCK!
Rewatching Rivals 1x06 and seeing Declan and Rupert try to woo the Bishop for Venturer, with commentary from Caitlin is forever hilarious.
god, can some talented lovely person who makes gif sets PLEASE immortalize the scene in ep 1 where Monica says āDROP!ā and Rupert and her labradors respond at the same time Iām begging you
Declan: Remember what I told you.
Caitlin: Don't be a cunt.
Wanted to ramble a bit about the āJehovahās Witness / Fucking Socksā sequence in episode one. What makes it so notable to me is that itās an exposition scene, a pure info dump. Thereās no action, no advancement of the plot. It exists only to introduce us to Lizzie, to the OāHaras, and to Rutshire. There isnāt a single line that isnāt doing structural, load-bearing exposition and character-building work, and yet itās all milk-down-a-silk-curtain smooth and a joy to watch.
We learn that Lizzie is a novelist. That Taggie is dyslexic and that Caitlin has no filter. That Rupert lives next door. That Lizzie and Rupert are friends. We learn that Lizzieās marriage is a disaster and that the OāHarasā marriage is probably worse (and Taggie knows it). We learn the dynamics of the whole family: that money is messy, that every family member is knee-deep in each otherās business, and that Taggie & Declan are the only oneās doing any work.
We get all of this and more in a scene thatās just funny and joyous from start to finish, a scene that makes you feel like youāve pulled up a chair in the Priory kitchen and been invited to join in. The sunās shining, the Agaās warm, and youāre drinking champers from a teacup at 9 AM on a weekday because lifeās short and why bloody not.
Also, I canāt do justice to the sound Katherine Parkinson makes in response to the question: āIs your husband fiercely protective?ā There are coherent and articulate paragraphs of meaning in that single sound.
Lastly, itās worth noting that Declanās toplessness is doing double duty in the scene. Partly, yes, itās just aesthetically pleasing, but itās alsoālike every bit of costuming and blocking in the sceneādefining character. Thereās unapologetic openness and earthiness to Declanās striding about without a shirt. Because no one in this family is hiding who they are, no one (except Lizzie who squeaks when she sees Declanās bare chest) is prudish, no one is batting eyelids at Lizzie writing smut, no one worries about their teenaged daughter wanting to be ravished, no one cares a jot about discussing (with a total stranger) Taggieās loss of virginity, no oneās secrets are sacrosanct. The OāHaras live messily, beautifully, musically, and out loud, and just like Lizzieāwho essentially ends the episode writing OāHara fanficāthatās a big part of the reason weāre instantly drawn to all of them.
And I think perhaps thatās why this establishing scene is so important; for this show to work, we need to want to watch the OāHaras. For as much as Rivals is an ensemble showāand for as much as characters like Tony, Rupert, Lizzie, and Cameron get as much screen time as the OāHarasāRivals is the OāHarasā story. Itās structured around them: their jobs, their loves, their house, their relationships. It works because they engage us.
The tinyness and crappiness of Declanās car are so important in illustrating the confusing way wealth could work in the 80s. This is a time when you could be on the tellyāfamous, at the top of your gameāand still drive a shitty car. And, while driving that shitty car and not wanting to shell out for a harp, you could buy a gorgeous pile in the Cotswolds with a single signing bonus cheque and a hefty mortgage.

I feel like people who only talk about the romances in rivals are missing a large chunk of the joy of the show: all the secondary and even minor characters. All of them are so well written/acted! The majority of characters who appear onscreen/have lines are so well characterised you can pretty much get their deal as soon as you see them. The Corinium staff! We pretty much know what Joyce is about from her tiny scenes in the show, from her saying "I'm not paid enough to have opinions" and then her sly remark about Declan's legs. Then we get her later actions in the show, which shows that whilst she's loyal to Tony, she's willing to step in to course correct. Seb is kind and smart! Daysee's smarter than she looks and works hard! Deidre's a massive bitch! Even the tech staff making Irish jokes get a decent bit of character. Then we have my beloveds, the Makepeaces'. Kevin and Shelley steal the scene every time they turn up. Fingers crossed they get off with a posh cunt and get out of Rutshire. Shelley's "you're not touching my tits dressed like that" lives in my head rent free.
Such a well-crafted show.
