I randomly felt like drawing a kitty and inspired by a POUND exercise class that I’ve recently went to, this is the result.
I’ve decided to start making swatches for the watercolor paints (all Daniel Smith) I have in my collection for better references. Also taking it as a chance to practice my graded wash. It’s done on The Langton paper, which is made of wood pulp mix, not 100% cotton. It’s the paper I am practicing on the most recently.
I’ve adopted the swatches style from youtuber In Liquid Color which I think is very pretty and informative. It also made me want to paint whenever I look at her swatches.
I’ve added a small box of my own on the top of each swatch for pure color, practically out of the tube, to gauge the tonal values of the paint as well. Inspired by Ng Woon Lam’s “Practical Application of Color Theory & Design Concepts” which is quite enlightening for me.
Now, onward to more practice!
Chinese ink painting class practice. Slowly, slowly getting the hang of it. There’s less water smudges. *gives self pat on the back*
Practice.
So, I’ve finished my watercolor sketchbook and went to get a new one thinking, since I need to practice a lot more, let’s get cheapest for the bulk. If the art store is selling it, surely it can’t be too bad? (Optimistically ignoring the advice from my teacher about good paper. I am use to buying cheap newsprint for throwaway drawing practices after all. I can’t bear to use arches or fabriano when I am practicing my shitty watercolour skills.)
I REGRET.
*Note, decent paper is not crazy expensive artist paper like arches. It’s The Langton by Daler Rowney. Cheap paper is just... Really Cheap.
Trying to get the hang of the watercolor medium. The watery medium has always been tricky for me. I am setting my goal for this year to well, I doubt I will master it in that short amount of time, but at least overcome my fear of it.
Started taking Chinese ink painting lessons this year. Our teacher gave the class a Xu Beihong’s painting of a horse as an example for practice recently. I am still struggling with ink control but I am starting to slowly be more familiar with it. Basic strokes and brush control still have a long way to go. Need to practice more.
First attempt of the horse was a bloopy mess. Fourth attempt turned out slightly more decent.
Inktober Day 25
Quick simple sketch. It’s been a long day.
Inktober Day 24
Brush pen + Water brush pen = Fun times
Inktober Day 23
Playing around with new pens (and failing at the watercolor part).
Inktober Day 14
Because my writing pen ran out of ink, I fell back on the 7-year old brush pen, which is also running out of ink. I am surprised that it’s actually still working after so many years of unused...
Doing panda studies because I wanted to try to be more graphic with bigger patches of black against white. They are also great at being cute.
Inktober Day 10
Studying some skulls and attempting to stylize.
My trusty writing pen ran out of ink halfway so i switched to my brush pen, which is good for forcing me to not linger on details.
Inktober Day 9
Sketching random celebrities.
Inktober Day 6
Random fruits.
Inktober Day 5
Today’s dinner was delicious!
Inktober Day 4
It’s mid-autumn festival today!
Inktober Day 3
Feel like drawing a fox today.
