As my friend Ben reminded all passengers in his dear Subie, ATTITUDE IS EVERYTHING. :)
“Amass the wealth of peace, equanimity, non-attachment and equal sight.”

this is awesome. makes me think of my best friend.
After lengthy research, I have become convinced that Jesus Christ himself was in all likelihood a vegetarian, and that vegetarianism was probably a central tenet of the early Christian community.
Well, this was quite an insight. If you believe in animal consciousness, it is truly amazing to imagine how they think of Jesus. He stood up for the end of animal sacrifice, and he was sacrificed by the same powers. How strange it is to live in a world of religions that preach love and compassion, but many of us do not extend that to the animals in which we share this planet with, as if they do not feel. Love is the strongest emotion, in my belief, and so to shield us from the guilt and horror of the slaughter of animals, we put it out of sight, out of smell-range, out of of earshot.
When children are young, many refuse to eat meat. Yet under a steady stream of pressure, continually repackaging flesh into unrecognizable edible delights that can be dipped in sweet and salty sauces, and we get used to flesh. It's not really seen as meat- it's a chicken nugget, part of a hamburger, in the pasta sauce, packets of protein that are part of a balanced diet.
The fact is, this has happened to most of our food. It is a call and response system in the fast food nation. If a person is hungry, they look at the menu, order, receive, and consume. The reverence for what went into making that food, from the soil to the people up and down the supply chain, are out of sight.
I understand life is to enjoy. It is not my point to be a downer on the carnivore community or enjoyers of fast food. One thing we can do today is to take a moment before digging into our meal, to think about and give thanks for all that went into the meal. It can be without words, but that moment of deep gratitude can rise a person to new levels of feeling.
One question: How do you develop a relationship with your food? Is there more that goes into it besides what ends up on your plate?
Doing it, and doing it well. Reaping the abundance!
"Friends, if you desire respect and prestige in society, then make sacrifices and undertake difficult to do actions. That sacrifice and austere action will only be this… that if you do not need to be in the company of undesirable people, then you should not be in such company."

Finally! The not-so-secret-yet-mysterious-processes at my fingertips! Onward, to health and good living!
‘Fat’ is usually the first insult a girl throws at another girl when she wants to hurt her. I mean, is ‘fat’ really the worst thing a human being can be? Is ‘fat’ worse than ‘vindictive’, ‘jealous’, ‘shallow’, ‘vain’, ‘boring’ or ‘cruel’? Not to me; but then, you might retort, what do I know about the pressure to be skinny? I’m not in the business of being judged on my looks, what with being a writer and earning my living by using my brain… I went to the British Book Awards that evening. After the award ceremony I bumped into a woman I hadn’t seen for nearly three years. The first thing she said to me? ‘You’ve lost a lot of weight since the last time I saw you!’ ‘Well,’ I said, slightly nonplussed, ‘the last time you saw me I’d just had a baby.’ What I felt like saying was, ‘I’ve produced my third child and my sixth novel since I last saw you. Aren’t either of those things more important, more interesting, than my size?’ But no – my waist looked smaller! Forget the kid and the book: finally, something to celebrate! I’ve got two daughters who will have to make their way in this skinny-obsessed world, and it worries me, because I don’t want them to be empty-headed, self-obsessed, emaciated clones; I’d rather they were independent, interesting, idealistic, kind, opinionated, original, funny – a thousand things, before ‘thin’. And frankly, I’d rather they didn’t give a gust of stinking chihuahua flatulence whether the woman standing next to them has fleshier knees than they do. Let my girls be Hermiones, rather than Pansy Parkinsons.

Leaving Sonoma soon. Not sure what is in store. And that's okay.
Each year, the world produces about 1,471 pounds of edible food for every person on the planet. We only eat about half of that. What happens to the rest? This video breaks it down.
There's enough food. Growing the right crops, Being picked, handled, distributed, prepared, disposed of properly? That's an outstanding 'no'. Lucky for us the Fed is thinking about it a little with some money in the Farm Bill going towards developing local food systems. Woot!

I am currently reading Last Child in the Woods: Saving our children from nature-deficit disorder by Richard Louv.
Has anyone else read this book?
Yes. It's the real deal. Suzanne Laurel & I wrote a grant to make an after-school program to address it. And if you're into the movement, they send out weekly emails with resources/blog. :)

This gorgeous butterfly is a Malachite (Siproeta stelenes). The southern tip of texas is the northern most part of their range, which extends down to South America. The adults feed on nectar, the juices of rotting fruits, and even the fluids from animal feces :3 The larvae feed on the leaves of plants in the family Acanthaceae, especially Mexican Petunia.
