Observing Day of Silence on Instagram
For more from the 19th annual National Day of Silence, browse the #dayofsilence hashtag and visit the GLSEN website.
Friday marked the 19th Annual Day of Silence, a movement in schools and universities to call attention to the issue of LGBT bullying and harassment among youth.
Organized by the Gay, Lesbian & Straight Education Network (GLSEN), the day is marked by teens spending the day in silence as a symbol of the “silencing effect of anti-LGBT bias and behavior.” The organization estimates that hundreds of thousands of LGBT and allied students at more than 8,000 schools participated in the event this year, many wearing shirts, stickers or pins to explain their reason for silence.

The ceiling feature consists of 2150 pieces of reclaimed wood and 1200 steel rods holding the wood into place.
I was just thinking of you. It wasn't the greatest of thoughts. I was remembering the many times you have broken down around me. You always thanked me for being there when you needed me. I think I can say now, "I know how you felt". No one can help that pain go away. It comes back at will and you never see it coming. I want you to know how much you mean to me. When I want to give up, you pop into my mind and I realize that you haven't given up. I realize that you haven't given up on me. You bring my heart comfort and warmth when it is feeling alone and cold. I can never thank or love you enough for that. Happy Valentines Day!
Robert Smithson’s Ever-Changing Spiral Jetty
To see more photos and videos of Spiral Jetty, explore the Robert Smithson’s Spiral Jetty location page.
Over the course of six days in 1970, American land artist Robert Smithson created his greatest work: Spiral Jetty. The 1,500-foot-long (460-meter) curlicue made of basalt rock juts from the shore of Utah’s rose-colored Great Salt Lake and constantly changes with the surrounding environment. Two years after Smithson finished the sculpture, rising water levels submerged the entire artwork for decades. When recent droughts lowered the height of the lake the artwork reemerged, though its appearance had changed dramatically. The once-black rocks are now whitened by salt crystals and silt. Fortunately, Instagrammers have made the trek to rural Utah to see and capture Spiral Jetty in person while it’s still visible.
Some hearts you will never warm or soften, but you can allow your heart to be warm and soften towards them.
Then and Now.
It is funny how Salt Lake City was built with a transit system and it was ripped out only for it to come back many years later. If you look closely you will see the same buildings standing. I think the old design looks much more impressive than the new.
