Week 6 Reading Response

My reading process is very straight forward. the first thing i do is try to find something that's relevant to what I’m looking for. If what I’m reading is relevant, i then skim through what I’m going to read just to make sure its relevant one last time. if the paper fits all the criteria that i set, then i finally read it thoroughly.

From my experience my reading process is really effective. the only problem that i have encountered while dealing with this is that sometimes i may not use critical resources to help with my papers. since they don't fit my criteria i quickly through them out  even if they may actually fit my paper in the end.

Usually i use most of the things taught in this class to rhetorically read stuff. like for example, the book says to look for the ethos pathos and logos subliminally all the time, like finding credibly resources.

 The chapter and the video have helped me and will help me for the lit review. it showed me ways to look for  good sources in a more efficant way and  and how to analyze what im reading in a more efficient way as well.

W5 Reading Response

Writing in Transit: Chapter 3 

This week’s reading focuses on explaining the importance of good and effective research questions. Not only must they be effective and significant for your research, but they should also be able to expand your knowledge even further on your discipline, and possibly encourage more research. 

Having the right questions for research is extremely important because in the end, it can influence the conclusion to your research. For example, accountants must ask the right questions, like what to do next after finding that a business is not doing so well, or where did the business go wrong, to be able to come up with an effective plan to help improve the business. 

This reading really helped me understand the importance of having good research questions to be able to write an effective paper, especially in the Lit Review assignment that’s coming up. Without good questions, the Lit Review would most likely not be informative or interesting enough. 

The first GIF that I used is to show that there are many questions that can be asked, but some will be more effective for the purpose of research in a specific discipline than others. The second GIF is relating the topic to my major. As I explained before, without asking the right questions, then an accountant won’t be able to come up with a plan to fix a problem within a business. 

Lit Review Topic Proposal 

The topic that I chose to focus on in week 1 was taxes. In my genre analysis I am focusing on whether it is possible to have equality in the tax system. For the Lit Review, I was thinking that I could extend a bit further on equality in the tax system by possibly writing about what kind of tax, either the fair tax or flat tax, would better benefit our country. Many economists and the general public believe that the U.S. has an unfair tax system. Therefore, some economists have suggested either the fair tax or flat tax to be implemented as our new tax system. I think that it this topic could maybe be interesting, especially if I could conduct interviews that give different views and opinions on the flat tax and fair tax.

i agree with you those are all questions accountants need to ask. We need to figure out ways to fix businesses that aren't doing too well and to do that we must first ask well questions.

Reading Response: Week 5

In this week’s reading in “Writing in Transit,” Chapter 3 discussed the importance of posing meaningful questions within our text. It also provided us with strategies and characteristics of effective questions, as well as examples containing implicit and explicit questions within the text. Developing questions whether they are simple or complicated, but have significance to your topic/research can help get your main ideas and purpose for your paper be sent out as clearly as possible. A good question should be able to sponsor multiple branches of inquiry leading towards the topic itself and arise many more questions that come from different perspectives and ideas other than yours. As we develop meaningful questions, these can build on and advance our research. 

I can relate this reading to my major by simply looking at where I am at right now. All freshman coming to UTEP who decided to major in Nursing, got the big scare of how difficult it is to get into this program. I remember doubting myself and ASKING/ANALYZING if this major really was for me. Asking myself significant questions like “What do I have to do to get there?” “Is this career for me?” “Am I going to love my job or hate it?” “Am I going to be dedicated enough in school, to get into this program?” All these questions and many more is basically what it is, and what helped me make up my mind on what I really wanted. As for actual nurses themselves, they have to ask specific questions to their patient to comprehend what is going on. Doing so facilitates the understanding and communication between the nurse and the patient to find a solution faster. This also prompts the nurse to ask herself what the patient might be suffering from if she starts seeing that what she thought the problem was at first, isn’t the real problem.

This reading helped me be aware of how specific my questions have to be, because I tend to go for broad questions in assignments. On page 56, the figure 3.1 “Pyramid of narrowing questions” gave me a great visual understanding of how I can break down broad questions to more specific ones, and decided to share it below. As visual explanations can help more people, rather than just viewing it in plain text. Choosing a big question, can be broken down to provide more detail and help find supportive answers for our Literature Review coming up. This reading prompts me to ask how can I successfully include implicit questions within my text, like the examples provided without it being obvious. 

Topic Proposal: My genre analysis focused on moral dilemmas in nursing, this topic focused more on different perspectives. Now I would like to focus my lit review on “Moral Distress in Nursing,” which focuses more specifically on the nurses thoughts and feelings.

week 5 Reading Response

This weeks reading was on “Posing meaningful Questions” which was about the importance of asking good questions. It stated all the reasons why good questions are needed like creating a better foundation for success in your research. it said how a good questions would help with the research at hand by helping spur new research. The book also explained some ways that you can use to pose new questions.

this relates to my major a lot. in when gathering information from the clients you must be asking well made questions that may be unique to each and every client based on what kind of business they own.  accountants must also ask the right questions in order to figure out an business standing financially.

This chapter is going to be a big help on this next upcoming assignment it will help with my ability to generate will written questions in the lit in order for the reader to effectively know what ill be talking about. this will also help me with the foundations of the paper as in order to create a goo paper you need a good question

For my lit review topic i will be writing about will be corporate accountability with regards to the environment .

Week 3 Reading Response

This weeks reading from Writing In Transit chapter 7, focuses on analysis. It went deeply into the understanding of what exactly analysis is and how it is used in the writing process and in our everyday lives. The best way i was able to understand the term was that it examines data in a very specific way in order to get a result of what is being analyzed. There are many ways something can be analyzed and many different questions to be asked when analyzing. A quote from this chapter that stood out to me was, “Analysis forms the basis of some of the most engaged debates and disagreements.” If you don’t think we use analysis in our everyday life decisions then think again. The first thing that popped into mind when reading this quote was the Presidential Election that has just occurred. Each American who voted had to analyze each candidate and see who they think would be best for Americas president. This proves how important analysis is because this was a big decision made when casting each vote.

The way that the analysis connects to my major is when diagnosing a patient occurs or when analyzing different diseases to get more information on them. We use analysis to “draw conclusions,” which is very important in the nursing field because you want to know exactly what you are diagnosing your patient with. You want to analyze each symptom the patient has in order to put all the information together and get one conclusion as to what might be wrong with the patient.

The reading is definitely going to help with upcoming assignments in this class because it shows the different types of data the academic writers analyze. These types are Visual, Aural, Tactile, Textual, and Quantitive. These will help with our genre analysis paper because it will give us a better understanding of what genre we choose to write about and what category it falls under.

The first gif i used was of Donald Trump and Hilary Clinton to give my explanation of how we use analysis in our everyday life. It shows both candidates in this election. The second picture i used was a doctor talking to his patient about his diagnosis which is why analysis is important in the nursing field. And the last gif i used represents me typing my genre analysis paper.

Analyzing Week 3 Response

This weeks reading was over chapter 7 from our book Writing in Transit. Not only did it give us an explanation of what “analyzing” is but it gave us deep details on the many ways it can be done, and how not everyone will have the same analysis as you nor the same way it was done. Just like we all have different ways of learning the same goes for analyzing some of us might be visuals (pictures, images, observations), while others might be textual (songs, notes, criticism) or aural (spoken language). At the end when it comes to analyzing you’re not just doing it on what you see, but on what you noticing any patters, understanding the text, making conclusions, and being able to explain the data to others who don’t have the background knowledge that you do over the topic. 

This reading connects to my major in all aspects! Only because there so much analyzing done in marketing from analyzing a product to the demographics of a certain area. I mean marking is not only selling a product is about research and analyzing that research to find out if a product will be successful or not and the same process is done for the reasons of it success or failure. No matter what we do in life we will always be analyzing no matter if it’s as effortless as picking a shirt, or as complex as a the molecules of life. 

The reading helped me understand with more clarity of why we interpret ideas differently. Not only that but that there’s a lot of analyzing our way with the upcoming assignments. But this reading will definitely help with with the future assignments because the chapter provides examples of the different ways to analyze it mainly works as a guide to answer any questions or any doubts I may have when writing the General Analysis or the Lit Review. 

I think my first GIF was a good visual explanation of what analyzing is because the more you look into something the more you find. As well as for the others my second GIF only because there is so much to analyse you don’t where to start, and for the last one because we as we’ve already seen we will be doing a significant amount of writing in this class.

Reading Response Week 3

This weeks reading from the writing in transit book was on analysis. It covered everything from the basics of analyzing to the modes of analysis. Overall though this chapter talked about what analysis really is, which is to examine data closely in order to understand bigger pieces of information. It also talked about how we analyze almost everything that we do, but we just don't notice it. An example of this would be when your looking to buy something and are simply researching similar products, you analyze every single detail so you can figures out what product fits your needs better.

Analysis plays a huge role in my major accounting. In accounting you analyze every single piece of data from a business to figure out how the business is doing. This is pretty much all accounting is analyzing businesses. 

This will sure help me in the upcoming assignment which is directly analysis. The fact that it shows me all the different types of data we will be analyzing in order to fully understand what genre I'll be writing about.

Reading Response

The article “Emerging personal media genres” talks about the different types of genres and its functions. It’s main ideas would include how genres are influenced by both, media and text, how the concept of genre is useful, and how genre operates with conventions and expectations; which just means what it is composed of and how we expect it to be due to what we have been told, or thought. Interesting right?

Genre connects to my major, Criminal Justice, in a way that when answering the phone to a 911 emergency call, I am responsible for understanding and communicating back using correct terminology. When doing this the other person on line, expects me to do that, which would be defined as the genre’s function. Or when being addressed a case, genre would be essential since I need to understand the context and the logic behind the text. 

The readings helped me gain more knowledge on what genre is and how it is not always just “fiction/ non-fiction”. Genres are much more than that. For example, genre focuses on sending a clear message to its audience by combining components, such as media and text. The article helped me understand that when analyzing genres, one needs to take into consideration all the different forms there is. This is taking me to be more open minded, and not just thinking genre is a classification of the text. 

The article prompt me to question how the different types of components make genre more complex than it sometimes already is.

Reading Response

A good point the article “Emerging Personal Media Genres” had was about how the different genres help communicate among all types of discourse communities. Now of course the way it’s being transmitted matters not only because there is many ways to do it, but because it has an impact in society. And with the fast growth in technology all these genres will only keep on growing.

Now keeping my major in mind, it definitely ties in because in Marketing you’re always trying to find a way to convince society to buy a certain product or service. So in one way or another these genres are something to keep in mind because we’re always communicating with society. Specially in this business world where all aspects of communication are used. That’s why I picked the following GIF because in the world of business and it’s about convincing you to buy something because in the long run its your money what we want. That’s why you often hear “nice making business with you”.

After reading this article it gave me more background knowledge of what a genre is. Yes it was a lot of information to sink in my mind and there is still a few unclear concepts, and sure enough all the examples provided help me understand a bit more. This reading will definitely help me in future assignment as I will be referring back to it to for references.

 Hi everyone. My name is Alan Echeverria and I am an 18 year old freshman at UTEP.

I am the youngest of three and my major is criminal justice. One of my hobbies is sports. My favorite team is the San Antonio Spurs.

To me rhetoric is the ability of using words to convince other people to lean towards your position or stance on a specific topic. I hope to understand rhetoric better and become a better writer by the end of this semester.

One of the topics in criminal justice that is most interesting to me is cybercrimes. Its interesting to see how they do it and how they can be stopped.

Introduction

Hi guys! My name is Karla Suarez, I am twenty years old, I am a sophmore and this is currently my fourth semester here at UTEP. I love math and business so therefore I am majoring in accounting, and I hope to become a certified public accountant. I enjoy listening to music, reading, anything involving superheroes, watching romantic comedies and Disney movies, cooking and baking, as well as doing DIY projects. My taste in music is very broad but my guilty pleasure is anything from the 80s. From Bon Jovi, to Queen, to Wham! and Madonna, if you give me anything from that era and I will probably love it. Also a fair warning, if you see that many of my Tumblr posts this semester have a lot of Olaf images or gifs, then it’s probably because he is my favorite Disney character. 

My definition of rhetoric is a person’s ability to successfully and clearly portray a message either in writing or by speaking. To me a person with good rhetorical skills should be able to use ethos, logos, and pathos and other rhetorical devices in an orderly and creative manner to be able to communicate a message to others. The expectations I have of this course is to be able to learn how to use rhetorical devices more effectively to be able to become a better writer and speaker.

The topic I want to focus on during the course of the semester is taxes. I believe it is a broad enough topic to be able to complete this semester’s assignments without getting bored or stuck with one specific issue within the topic. With this topic, I can focus on various sections like laws and regulations, as well as tax evasion and what happens to businesses and people when they do evade taxes. I also want to touch the subject of what is being done with the taxes that we pay, for example what programs are our taxes funding? Furthermore, I believe that not many people understand the full laws and regulations of taxes, so that’s why when many public figures release their tax forms or such, then they are quick to judge and make assumptions, although sometimes they really have followed the tax laws. With this topic, I hope to gain a better understanding of taxes in general.

Advice For Future Students

My biggest advice for this class is simply having the right attitude. Coming into this class my attitude towards this class was very poor as I didn’t want to take another RWS class and I didn’t want to use Tumblr. Having to use another social media outlet for school was something I was not looking forward to and hated it before I even had to do a single response. I quickly realized how beneficial Tumblr could be as soon as I started using it, reading the responses from my classmates gave me insight on that weeks reading that I may have missed. I also learned to enjoy using Tumblr as it gave me an informal way of doing homework as opposed to the traditional boring responses from every other class. Learn to enjoy Tumblr as its something you’re going to be using every week anyways so might as well make it enjoyable.

My next advice would be to read the weekly sections on blackboard, I found that after reading the weekly sections on BB I didn’t really need to attend class. Although I still attended every single day of class, I found the material that the professor gave us was already available to us on BB. The weekly modules are also a great tool when doing assignments, I found myself going back to them as references every time I did an assignment. They are also helpful when turning in homework as some weeks we have several things to turn it, looking back on BB to see what is due is key as not all assignments are available on the syllabus or class schedule.

Lastly I would recommend selecting a topic you find interesting and important for yourself as you will be writing about it all semester long. Personally I chose a topic that i was familiar in as I had already written write a bit about it in RWS 1301 last  semester. Choosing a topic that you will lose interest in will make this class drag the entire semester. Have fun in this class as it can be very enjoyable with the right attitude.
