Haka is an ancient type of Maori war dance. It was also used in times of peace but is still performed today (very notably by New Zealand's rugby team, the all blacks).
This wasn't a new word for me but I wanted to share it after I saw a really beautiful video this week of a Haka performed by an all boys school in NZ. One of their teachers had passed away suddenly at age 50 and the dance was in honor of him. It was with about 1,300 students and is incredibly moving. You can feel the power behind it. Watch it here.
It’s Maori Language week in New Zealand.
A week that’s meant to celebrate the importance of its language and culture. Maori are the indigenous people of New Zealand and there is an effort to pass down their language so their traditions/culture is not lost. In some schools, children are taught Maori starting at a young age and this week is to encourage the learning of the language. I’m celebrating by trying to learn a new word a day and lettering that word to share with you.
Today I choose Aotearoa, which is the Maori word for New Zealand. The literal translation is is "land of the long white cloud". I took this picture in The Remarkables mountain range on the South Island, it felt like I really was on a cloud...
My dad used to sing the theme song from the tv show rawhide to me as a kid when I wouldn’t get up in the morning…he is tone deaf and quite loud so it really was a pretty effective method. The show I think was about cattle ranchers (I never saw it) but I think the visuals of dogs on roller skates is much more amusing. “Rollin’ Rollin’ Rollin’ though the streams are swollen, keep those doggies Rollin’ Rawhide”
I find airplane announcements very difficult to understand. Sometimes I think I either completely mishear them or a bunch of pilots have a very weird/ hilarious sense of airplane humor. Just me?
Why not?!? …I had no idea what “hoon” meant except in the context that my friend was willing to give riding a mechanical bull a “hoon”. I took this as willing to give something a try. But it’s actually NZ/Australian slang normally used for people driving like drag racers. Hoon: To behave in a loutish or irresponsible way; spec. to drive fast or recklessly. Ya crazy hoon!
Matariki is the name for the cluster of stars, which is visible in late May or early June in New Zealand. It also represents the Māori New Year (which will start tomorrow).

I love idioms... They are often so strange when taken literally and always confusing if you aren't familiar with the expression. I hadn't heard this one before and thought it was a hilarious mental picture
New Zealand slang for awesome, agreed, or right… I hear it used allll the time. I'm finally getting how to include it in a sentence. Sweet as Bro, sweet as.
Good night Bali. It’s been real fun but now I’m flying back to New Zealand (at Ngurah Rai International Airport, Bali)
The Tanah Lot Temple is a pretty interesting place. A Hindu temple in the ocean that you can only walk out to during low tide. At the bottom of the temple are holy sea snakes that are thought to protect the temple from evil spirits. They are apparently venomous and for a small donation, you can pet one for good luck. For my friends that know me… yes I am still terrified by snakes. If I had known that it was venomous, I would have 100% chickened out and not petted it.
The snake was in a hole in a rock and you can’t see it’s head. I think half the luck must be if you aren’t bitten, I wasn’t bitten and I have to say… I felt pretty lucky. :) The picture above is my boyfriend, Simon, testing his luck with the holy snake.
Non-Hindu visitors aren’t allowed to enter the temple, but there were still some pretty amazing sights to see around it. If you visit, I highly recommend petting the holy snake, I felt like a flipping super hero.
I loved visiting the Uluwatu temple in Bali, Indonesia. It’s right on cliff at the sea and home to some very mischievous monkeys who have quite the collection of tourist’s stuff. The one pictured in this sketch has a gold bracelet and I saw another gnawing on a flip flop. You are told when you visit the temple not to wear any jewelry and to mind your things as the monkeys may find them interesting....
I had no issues but I won’t lie that the monkeys did scare me a bit. There was one that I nicknamed King Loui that just lay in the middle of the only path with a “what are you going to do about it” attitude... (what did i do about it? I walked through the brush and avoided him completely haha), I held pretty tight to my things but found them very entertaining. I stayed and watched the sunset and then went to see a traditional fire dance (more on that later).
So I decided to give a shot at bargaining in the Balinese market… I had no idea what I was doing but you’re expected and encouraged to bargain w vendors here. One of the vendors was very prompt in telling me I clearly was confused by their currency… She was correct haha
I think one of the most important words to learn when visiting another country is “thank you” a little thanks can go a long way. Terima kasih is Indonesian for thank you. I’m realllyyyy thankful that there is a tattoo artist on my trip that let me borrow her sweet art supplies after I left all my calligraphy pens on the plane haha (at Villa Sanctuary bali)
