After the Storm
Jimâs bright eyes narrowed. Their saturated color was highly uncommon in the Necromonger empire, though they were a mere shadow of their original electric color. They showed the sparks of his anger far more obviously than any other soldiersâ.
He moved quickly. Jim kicked out a foot- it struck Vaako to mostly no effect over the decorative armor the man wore for this âspecial occasionâ. He locked a hand into the collar of Vaakoâs armor, yanking him forward. It wasnât a kiss so much as an attack. And while it was rare that their physical intimacies lacked violence, he had no intention of deriving the slightest of pleasures from the way he sank his teeth into Vaakoâs flesh until he tasted blood.
Snarling, he shoved the larger man away, wiping his mouth, eyes flashing. âYou taste of poison,â he hissed, baring his teeth.

âI taste like you,â Vaako said as he licked the blood from his pale lips. He wanted to chuckle, but in Jimâs mood, heâd end up with a knife between the ribs. He couldnât seem to do or say the right thing, and heâd learned long ago that once the younger man was that would up it was best to let it go. Fighting would make it worse. Talking was making it worse. But that didnât stop him from leaning close on his way out of the lift to whisper in Jamesâ ear. âMy favorite flavor.â
The halls were filled with the Legion Vast, priests, servants and the newly converted. Vaako watched the milling crowd with hooded eyes as they made their way through the throng to get to the main chamber where the Lord Marshal stood at the ready to end all life on his home world. Vaakoâs fingers itched to be the one to push the trigger on the Conquest Beacons, but he would have to settle for watching death spread over the surface.
They were congratulationed from his commander and others. Vaako had his familyâs blade in its scabbard slung at his hip, and he felt a thrill each time he heard it tap against his leg as he walked. When Zhylaw called them to order, he stepped beside James, close enough that the blade was caught between them. âThis is our victory to share, James.âÂ

The necromongerâs spine straightened when Siberius breathed against his ear, a thrill catching the breath in his throat. His mood had dispelled gradually with each glance thrown between then, which each congratulations that passed first to Lord Vaako and then to his second. The whole damn army seemed to know that James belonged at Vaakoâs side, and if that wasnât a testament then there could be none.
It didnât hurt that the woman in questions was nowhere in sight.
His fingers flicked out to catch against the tips of Vaakoâs as the flares went off and the planet was wiped before the fleet. A smug smirk twisted his pale face, eyes half-shut and feline as he watched what had once been Siberiusâ home burn itself clean. That in itself felt like a cathartic victory. Vaakoâs ties had always been to the Empire since his conversion, but now he had nowhere else that any part of him could ever belong to.
Jim- he didnât really know that feeling. His planet of origin still stood. But the colony from which he had been converted? Oh, that was long, long gone.
Expression returning to impassive, he disengaged from the other man, turning from the planetâs dying embers.
