“Excuse you it was entirely approved by our superiors,” Rodney burst in snootily, crossing broad arms across his chest. He felt weak again, which was irritating. He’d spent all those years finally getting in shape, he didn’t fancy a second go-around. Then again, if his muscles had atrophied, so had John’s. haaaaaah. “The ones who mattered, anyway,” he tacked on awkwardly, getting back on track.

“Also, did the augments stay in control? …Are any of you augmented?” he asked cautiously. They probably should’ve checked that first.

“Well, approved or not, they sure as hell can’t court-martial you now,” Jim pointed out. “Consider it one small upside to being two hundred years out of your time.” As someone who’d been recently raked over the coals by superiors, Jim thought of it as an upside.

“No, the augments were eventually defeated. Eugenics of any kind is illegal on all Federation worlds. I’m sure it still happens in black market labs and things like that, but no, none of us are augmented.”

“Good to know,” John said with a short nod. He got up and paced toward the window to try and get a view of Kirk’s ship. He was a pilot. He couldn’t help himself. Earth had, had almost 300 years to use the tech they’d found through the Stargates and the Ancient tech they’d found on Earth. It was boggling to think of all they might be able to do now.

“Hey, do you guys have ZPMs? Is that how you power your ship?” Sure, he was giving away some information that was vital to Atlantis, but in the game of making nice, sometimes you had to share to find out what you really needed to know. “We don’t exactly have unlimited power on the old girl.”

There was no telling which word John spoke that triggered the Atlantis interface. What he’d said that woke up the dormant engines. But before Kirk could answer, there was a lurch on the great ship and a thrum of power vibrated the deck beneath their feet. A rush of power and light and suddenly Atlantis was no longer where she’d been.

On the Federation Starship they watched helplessly as the ancient alien craft suddenly winked out into hyperspace.

“Shit,” John said as he ran toward the door to get to the control room. “Rodney! Come on.”

The One with the Kid - John & Rodney

They were greeted with pause. Rodney expected that no one would come down the steps, since water had flown in with them and risen up to their ankles before the gate shut down. What he didn’t expect was the strange silence, broken by an awkward ‘um…’ from Chuck.

“What?” he snapped irritably.

The gate technician pointed vaguely at something behind him. Rolling his eyes, Rodney spun around and- oh. Hm.

“Uh. Guys, this is Tress?”

“Rodney-”

“It wasn’t my fault!” he cut off automatically. “If anything, you should blame John.” He splashed back to the girl, taking her hand. “Forget about it, lecture us later, I think we can all agree dry clothes are in order.”

“Come on,” he told Tress and John, “let’s go find Teyla, I’m sure the Athosians can cook up something.”

John crouched in front of Tress and adjusted the belt they’d slung around her waist to hold one of his t-shirts over her slender frame. She hadn’t wanted to wear Athosian clothes. Those were too much like her old clothes. As far as Tress was concerned she was an Atlantean now, and that meant she was going to wear John and/or Rodney’s clothes. It hadn’t mattered when John tried to convince her their clothes were too big. So there was wearing his shirt like a tunic/dress over her naked legs. At least they were all dry?

“Look, honey,” he said as he held up a pair of capris pants that Lieutenant Ivers had donated. They were small, and John thought maybe the kid would be able to wear them without face-planting all over the place. “These are Atlantean clothes, and they will fit you until we take you home.”

“Fine,” she said with a huff as she pulled them on, glaring at them both. “But I am home. You are my fathers, now. I will stay here. The village gave me to you.”

Oh god.

“Rodney.” He met the other’s eyes over the top of Tress’ head. “This is another one of those cute customs biting us in the ass, isn’t it?”

“Mmm, poptarts,” he muttered to John just as the team of strangers arrived, “tastiest cardboard in the galaxies.”

‘They sure look human’ meant nothing in the galaxy, as the first stargate team had learned. Even without the Goa’uld setting slave outposts around the milky way, apparently ‘humanoid’ was the default in the universe. It was like lazily written sci-fi. One of ‘Lieutenant Commander Kirk’ ‘s team of lackeys may have the ancient gene, more systems were coming online with their pods than Rodney had programmed, but knowing Atlantis she could be reacting to John being awake again. She always did love him so.

USS Bradbury’ was a very Earth-sounding designation for a ship, though. Although he had to hope it was named after someone that hadn’t been born after they went to sleep, because naming a ship after a writer was… stupid, didn’t they have enough Nobel winners in the future or something? Or military leaders, whatever.

“I don’t suppose you happen to be from Earth?”

“United States? There… hasn’t technically been a United States politically speaking in a long time, although the names are still used - I’m from Iowa,” Jim said carefully, adding his own home region in hopes of a little bit of common ground. It was worth a shot. He could give the exact timing for Earth becoming one government, of course, or close enough to it at least, but he decided to be vague for the moment. “Earth has a planetary government, and is part of the United Federation of Planets. Starfleet is the Federation’s main peacekeeping, military, and exploratory force.”

He looked around. “Which is why a place like this, with someone claiming to belong to a long-defunct Earth military force, really ought to be in our records, and yet it isn’t.” Which Jim wasn’t exactly complaining about; it made for a more interesting situation, anyway. Although he’d really like to know just what all the things turning on were doing.

No United States. John knew it was a possibility, but it didn’t happen overnight—but then again God knew what happened to the government after the Augments and their wars were finally over. Just because the fighting stopped didn’t mean everything went back to the way it was before. It’d be impossible considering all the damage Khan and his ilk had caused.

“Iowa.” John didn’t say where he was from specifically. It was to be obstructive on purpose. He just hated anyone finding out who his father had been, and the last thing he wanted was to find out his family had thrived to become more powerful while he and Rodney were taking their long, cold, nap in space.

“I’m American too. Rodney’s Canadian.” Tiny bits and pieces of information. Keep it close to the vest. He’d learned that the more harmless and friendly an alien was usually meant they were total bastards. The Wraith were the most honest aliens he’d ever met: ugly inside and out. “Long defunct, huh? What year is it? How long were we sleeping? We left Earth at the end of Augment Wars. Decided Atlantis should go back home to Pegasus, and no, it wasn’t exactly approved by our superiors.”

Is this Going to Work? - John and Rodney

Rodney snorted, laughing, shaking his head. “Are you calling me brainless?” Rodney cracked his beer open. He skated his feet along the ground, spinning his chair in little circles. He leaned back, looking around the room. It was nothing like the control room, much smaller, the only light coming from the waiting pods and the spots of stars filtering through the slim windows. “Are you saying you’re Dorothy?”

He took a long swallow of his own beer, something twisting a little uncomfortably in his gut. “What are you talking about?” he joked, casting his eyes on the taller man, “I already can’t wait to get out of here.”

His memories during his brush with the ‘second childhood’ parasite were pretty jumbled, but he remembered with a strange obsessive clarity that John had refused to say goodbye. He couldn’t express how much that meant to him. Never tried.

“Do you think we’ll find civilization or civilization will find us, first?”

I’m saying that I’ll miss you most of all. I’m just too chicken to say it out loud.

He watched Rodney play around on the chair and wondered how much of their precious resources they waste if they decided to race down the corridors in the chairs. It’d be a challenge because office chairs never went in a straight line, and they’d end up careening like racketballs, covered in bruises, before they reached the finish line. Great, I’m emotionally and mentally a 12-year-old.

“You are far from brainless, Rodney. You’re the smartest guy I’ve ever met,” he said before finishing off the beer in one long drink. He sat the empty bottle on the edge of the table and leaned back in the chair, using his legs for balance, since he didn’t want to go over backward in it.

“I don’t know. Probably be safer if we got all the way home without anyone noticing us. We’ll get to Pegasus, find some ZPMs, and get the old girl back in form.” He reached for the nearest wall and patted it like Atlantis was a horse. “We’ll need to find a new crew, people to live here and help run the place. The two of us can’t do it alone once we land. We’ll need help.”
