[Flashback to September] Screaming Bloody Murder → Rosier + D'Vello.
Why are you still here? Evan felt his teeth bite down at his lower lip hard as his eyes looked over the scene once more. He hadn’t realised the amount of blood over Mr D’Vello’s dress or how his nose was a little wonky now. His fists ached though there was no evidence thanks to the potion he’d rubbed in earlier, though Evan felt like he should have something to show from the ordeal. “No need to apologise,” he cracked a small smile at her, appearing friendly despite his inner turmoil.
Soon, someone would be here thanks to Selwyn to deal with the mess Evan had created and then he could simply slip away and drink until he forgets. Though, how could he forget Lorelei’s face, her upset? Her heart had smashed into a million pieces and that was hardly something Evan could ever forget easily. Standing by the door, he took a step inside, approaching Lorelei with an outstretched arm. His hand wrapped around her forearm securely and he squeezed it reassuringly. If he could act calm, maybe he could give her a little something. “I’m sorry I left, but I had to tell- what?”Â
Eyes snapping to her, Evan froze. Stay? Stay until the Aurors got there? How could he ever get out of that one? “I-I-” he looked to her, taking in her pained expression and the red of her eyes. “I-I’ll stay with you.” His voice was far much stronger than he felt.Â
The reassurance that Evan would stay swept across her in waves. They'd never exactly been close at school, far from it in fact, but the familiarity in a situation so foreign was grounding. Anchoring. Lorelei wasn't sure she could deal with letting go of that until there were at least others here to help her deal with this. She half wondered if any of the Aurors coming would have been at school with her. "Thank you, Evan," She responded quietly, and if the situation had been different she might have smiled. The silence that seemed to hang around them when neither of them spoke didn't seem out of place; perhaps she was just too stiff to really notice it.
There was a pleasant numbness that seemed to have settled over Lorelei, but it wasn't exactly a happy one. If she'd been a Healer perhaps she'd have attributed it to shock, but the blonde was far too busy embracing the comforting shield to care. Sooner or later it would thaw, whether she knew it or not. The pain would return then, and come crashing down on her along with the striking images of her father. There would be no forgetting how he looked for Lorelei, not for a long time; even though she refused to look in his direction now, it would be branded into her memory for years. Her family, thankfully, would be spared at least that part of the pain James D'Vello's death would cause.Â
I'm not usually much of a drinker.
"But I think today might be one of those days where I need a pick-me-up.", Xenophilius sighed slightly, though his usual awkward sense of cheer still seemed to remain in his voice; a humorous tone, as if mocking his own misfortunes. "First my Mimbulus Mimbletonia went and croaked on me, brought me to tears, might I add. Then the Ministry is trying to shut down my piece on Goblin rights within the Magical Union, load of bollocks, by the way! Did you know that Goblins still get paid nearly a sickle less per hour than that of a working Wizard?”, he sighed again. "Mad times, these are. Perhaps I need a few more than just a drink…”, he laughed quietly.
"If you're honestly looking to get drunk, I can vouch for the potency of a double shot of single-malt whiskey," Lorelei piped up from her seat perched at the bar. It seemed like she'd been in here far too often lately, but ever since her father's death she hadn't really liked being at home. "But yes, I'm quite aware about the goblins," The blonde added as an afterthought, nodding her head a little. "If it makes you feel any better sweetheart I distinctly remember seeing some paperwork cross my desk about an appeal for that filed. Some idealistic sod seems to think that'll get the Confederation to listen but.." She trailed off with a little shrug, nursing her own drink.
Screaming Bloody Murder → Rosier + D'Vello.
Despite the mask of calm that Evan Rosier currently wore, there was no denying that his heart was racing a marathon and his palms were becoming slick with sweat. As he straighten up to look up Lorelei, her clear sadness and heart attack struck Evan and he felt the heavy weight of guilt being lumbered upon his shoulders. He had caused this, his misjudgment had done this. And now it was his time to make it right… or at least a little.
"Selwyn?" he jolted from his thoughts with a hard blow, his eyes bulging slightly. Maybe it was Evan’s lucky day after all. "I-I will find them and send work. You wait here, the Auror’s will want to speak with you." He gestured towards the chair in one last effort to keep her calm before curtly nodding and dashing for the door. He knew he who was after, who he needed to find first. What luck was it that a Death Eater worked on this floor?Â
Evan hurried down the hall, casting glances into open office doors until he stumbled across one with the name he was looking for written on a plaque the was built into the door. Without knocking, Evan pushed open the door and skidded inside. The man inside jumped with a stare, wand swiftly coming from his pocket. “Rosier, what the fuck are you doing?" Selwyn grunted, pocketing his wand again when he realised who the intruder was.
"I need you to send word that D’Vello is dead. I need to get out of here before anyone find him or his daughter. She’s in the room right now, she came in before I had chance to run," his words came as a rush. "Stop anyone from getting in there, not before I leave, got it? The Dark Lord wouldn’t want me imprisoned, understand?"
Sewlyn blinked and nodded. “I will send word and throw a few deterant charms up to give you some time before they find the body. But, Evan, if his daughter is there, she will mention you were present. You need to deal with that-.”
"I am not killing her. Just get what I’ve told you done." With that, Evan turned his back and hurried back to Lorelei and her father’s body. Before reentering, Evan composed himself once more. "I have sent word, Lorelei, though I think it’s best I went and-and tried to find help, too. You shouldn’t sit in here alone though."
Once again Lorelei found herself unable to do much but nod dumbly along at Evan's words, his direction. She wondered if it had been her in his shoes, with someone else discovering the body of their father, would she be able to maintain this semblance of calm like he did? She wasn't really sure anymore. All her supposed strength and bravery had melted away on seeing the blood across her father's pale, beaten face.Â
Lorelei didn't make it to the chair even after Evan had pointed it out again. It was much to close to the body for her to even think about going near it, especially now that it was just her and- it left in the office together. The rolling in her stomach seemed to come swimming back, but her own stubbornness kept the shaking in her legs making them give out. There was some last streak of defiance left in her, unconsciously at least, to put on a shield, to pretend like she was a little better than she really was.
Instead the blonde shuffled her way towards the door of the office, still open and surrounded by her scattered papers. One arm remained crossed over her stomach, as if that would calm the nausea, the other lay limply by her side, unsure of what to do. All of her tears seemed to have dried out now, and the sobs wracking her body before calmed to mere hiccups. It was all replaced with a numbness broken only by a faint swell of relief when she saw Evan's figure reappear in the office. "Thank you," She managed out after a little stutter with her words.  If he hadn't been here then she wasn't entirely sure what she should have done. But why is he here? that voice in her head nagged again. Lorelei quickly brushed it away with a weak smile in his direction instead. "I- yes, I'm not sure I- it was bad enough when you left me here just-" She shook her head.  Breaking down in front of an old school friend was certainly never something she'd do in normal circumstances, but these weren't exactly normal, were there? "Will you stay? At least, for the Aurors to come,"
Eliot giving me time off of work was a mistake.
lilredpotter:
You were still a friendly person, and I see no reason to judge people on their harder moments in life. Then again, it’s no secret that I did not always employ the best of company.
It is! Are you finding your job interesting, at least?
I think I should stick around if you're going to continue to pay me compliments like that, Lily.Â
Merlin's beard, no. I hate it. Working with Eliot- my supervisor, co-worker, whatever, is about the only bearable thing about it and that's only really due to time spent with him outside of the office. It was my father's wish for me to work here, and I suppose given the alternative of sitting at home right now.. I can manage it.
It's pretty sad when your only drinking buddy these days is a dog.
Well, sweetheart, unless you have any better suggestions, though I hardly recall asking your opinion…
You didn't, but I couldn't help but comment on an amusing situation. Maybe you should ask poochie for suggestions if you don't want mine.Â
Eliot giving me time off of work was a mistake.
I’m not offended in the least.
No, no it’s not. Well that is a good thing, I do believe. Everyone is allowed some snappy moments, but life is generally more pleasant when they’re rare occurrences.
Probably just as well we weren't that close in our younger years then. I'm surprised you all managed to share a dorm with some of my temper tantrums.Â
Anyway, the past is the past.
It's pretty sad when your only drinking buddy these days is a dog.
More than just pretty sad, sweetheart.Â
