I just saw someone on tumblr call muse butt rock.
not to be a grumpy get-off-my-lawn millennial, but "butt rock" isn't just "rock music i think sucks". as dumb as the label is, labels still have very specific meanings!
zoomers are just being irresponsible arbitrarily naming things now. what next, are we calling oasis emo? is my chemical romance prog now?
anon anon anon, a person after my own heart, do you know Gen Z is calling Deftones shoegaze. And don't get me started on 'indie sleaze' (aka the nostalgic revival of garage rock revival and indie rock of the 2000s, bundling in a bit of electroclash and nightclub culture for good measure). Labels have changed their meanings over time!
And not butt rock! Muse in particular seem to confound every reviewer and fan whenever a new album drops, I'm not sure what's "commercially safe" about their music besides the fact that they already have fans. Wasn't 'butt rock' like AOR nu-metal/Korn/Blink-adjacent guitar bands in the 90s? Radio rock?
IIRC butt rock was mostly a mishmash of nu metal and post grunge that came out sometime in the late 90s/early 2000s before the post punk revival and emo explosion. Imagine a lot of Eddie Vedder soundalikes playing the background music in WWE shows. Nickelback was kind of a surviving relic from this era.
This gets further muddled by the overlap with "minivan rock", a borderline misogynist label for slightly softer, more sensitive rock that's also favored by female listeners.
can we talk liquid state..... christopher tony wolstenholme the man you ARE
