tender moment after shift
Trinity who (on the advice of her therapist) tries to find an alternative outlet when the scalpel calls to her. Tries so many things, 3am workouts, ice packs, journalling.
Trinity who finally lands on baking. Keeps her hands moving, has to focus enough to measure accurately, has to wait watching cakes rise for 25 minutes through the oven door, crossed-legged on the kitchen floor. Will be there as dawn breaks pulling out a sheet of cookies.
Everyone in the Pitt loves her baking. She brings in muffins, banana bread, bibingka. Smiles are thrown her way every time, words of thanks between bites.
Except Baran, who watches as Trinity drops three tins of baked goods onto the break room counter one morning, early enough no one else is around. Who steps close to her, gently pushes her hair back from her face where it's fallen out of her ponytail. Who rubs her thumb, once, twice, over Trinity's cheek.
Who asks, "Rough night?"
Whilst sitting on the floor, Trinity finds baby pictures of Kaveh and comes across pictures of a pregnant Baran. In one of the pictures, Baran is lying on a sunbed wearing a blue bikini. There’s a dark stripe running down the middle of Baran’s belly with her bellybutton slightly protruding.
Baran quietly comes up behind Trinity and sees the picture of herself on the sun bed. Her head immediately fills up with the thoughts of having another baby and seeing Trinity become a mother. She loved being pregnant and if her age allows, she would do it again.
Baran had seen Trinity hold and comfort Baby Jane Doe during her first day in the Pitt, weeks before she worked up the courage to ask Trinity out.
Since the first day, Kaveh adores Trinity and has been calling her Mama. He even asks her to pick him up from school instead of Baran.
Baran sits down on the floor and envelopes Trinity from behind. Trinity smiles when she feels Baran behind.
“Maybe we should have another baby?” Baran whispers into Trinity’s ear before softly kissing her neck.
Baran is so touch-starved that she starts crying when Trinity holds her hand for the first time. She doesn’t want Trinity to think she’s needy by having her touch her all the time. She even wants Trinity to touch her hair and tell her how good she is.
Baran finding out Trinity’s returning to the Pitt as an emergency pediatrics attending after four years of not seeing her.
Baran getting a glimpse of Trinity on her first day in the Pitt. She can’t get enough of Trinity. The younger woman’s changed. She isn’t the sarcastic and dry humoured resident Baran knew her to be. Trinity is confident within herself and chooses to not engage with staff members, choosing to focus on her work.
Baran watches Trinity oversee a pediatric trauma case in which a young boy breaks both of his legs after jumping off a tree. She watches how Trinity is talking the boy and his mother through every procedure in the trauma bay. The boy is about sixteen, same age as Kaveh.
Baran remembers Kaveh telling her that he still talks to Trinity every now and then. However, Kaveh’s a boy of a few words and doesn’t tell his Maman much about Trinity.
After the boy is stabilised and sent upstairs for surgery, Baran wills herself to approach Trinity.
Baran invites Trinity over for dinner and a drink or two. She knows Trinity’s off the next day after she looked at the roster.
The older woman expects Trinity to decline but to her surprise, the younger woman accepts the invitation.
Baran leaves first. She heads home and quickly prepares for Trinity. Kaveh comes out from his room and asks why his Maman was frantically preparing dinner. Baran tells him that Trinity is coming over. Kaveh smiles before helping his Maman.
Trinity comes to the house with a bottle of wine and snacks. Kaveh comes to the door and gives Trinity a hug, he had missed her over the years.
Baran smiles at the exchange before greeting Trinity. She watches how Trinity changes when she’s with Kaveh. Baran wants the same too.
It’s been a week since Kaveh died in a car accident. Baran’s grieving in which she spends her waking hours crying for her lost son and only child.
A fresh wave of grief hits Baran in the kitchen when she finds a mug belonging to Kaveh at the back of the cupboard. She collapses to the ground and sobs alone on the floor whilst Trinity’s at work.
Baran becoming a stay at home wife when her seizures force her to stop working. She can’t drive either.
Baran discovering gardening and finding joy in her garden.
Baran buying Kaveh a plant and teaching him how to take care of it.
Baran making Trinity to drive her to the garden centre on Trinity’s day off to buy more plants.
Baran getting upset that a specific flower wasn’t available. Trinity listens to her cry over it and drives four hours to get the specific flower for her wife.
Baran cooking Persian food for Trinity after overhearing her talk about the Persian restaurant she went to with Whitaker. She knows her food is better than any restaurant.
Baran showing up to Trinity’s apartment with the said food as a peace offering. She wants Trinity to see her than the attending who threatened her over her charting.
Trinity opening the door to find her attending with her hair down whilst wearing an old Stanford tshirt and shorts. She watches Baran lift up the containers of food she cooked for her.
Trinity smiles and lets her in. Baran is secretly overjoyed that she gets to feed Trinity.
Trinity breaking the news to Baran that her son didn’t make it after he got into a car accident. Trinity stays with Baran whilst she wails loudly. Dana and the rest of the Pitt hearing their Chief Attending’s wails coming from the family room with tears streaming down their faces.
Barantos but it’s Trinity getting Baran and her son Kaveh speaking again after three long months.
Kaveh fell out with his mother over his decision to not go to college. A massive fight ensued when Baran brought up college and Kaveh stormed out of the house to go to Trinity’s.
Kaveh wasn’t responding to Baran’s calls and messages as he made his way to Trinity’s apartment.
Trinity took Kaveh in. He told Trinity about not going to college and how Baran was against his decision. Trinity could hear Kaveh crying in his sleep every night in the guest room.
Meanwhile, Baran knew Kaveh was close to Trinity and had considered her as a second mother. Despite not talking to him, Baran knew he was safe with the younger woman.
Between trauma cases and the odd slow moment, Baran would quietly ask Trinity about Kaveh. Trinity could see how sad Baran had been since Kaveh stopped talking to her.
After three months, Trinity was fed up about how the mother and son were so miserable without seeing each other. Everyone in the Pitt knew Kaveh wasn’t talking to his mother for three months. Some of those who were parents themselves could see how much Baran was missing Kaveh.
Over pizza, Trinity told Kaveh that she was bringing his mother over and that he was going to have to talk it out with her. Kaveh was hesitant about it but agreed.
Baran was nervous but she was desperate to see Kaveh again. Her house felt empty without him. She didn’t want to keep fighting with him. She missed his hugs and his sandalwood smell that came from the cologne he liked to wear.
After their shift, Baran was in Trinity’s car in the passenger seat. She was quiet during the fifteen minute drive to Trinity’s apartment whilst Trinity drove.
Kaveh was standing in the kitchen when Trinity and Baran came in. The mother and son looked at each other for the first time in three months with Baran’s eyes welling up.
Trinity got them to sit down at the table. She got Baran and Kaveh to say their side out about the college debacle. Kaveh was frustrated with his mother’s side whilst knowing his mother only wanted the best for him.
Kaveh admitted that his mother’s expectations was suffocating him and was making him not want to speak to her. The admission from Kaveh rendered Baran silent with tears in her eyes.
Kaveh continued to tell her that he was happy with working as a landscaper and he was proud of himself. Baran realised that her son was happy with what he was doing before apologising to him.
Kaveh got up from the table and went over to Baran. He opened his arms to his mother who was crying again. Baran went into her son’s arms and sobbed into his chest.
Trinity got up and went to squeeze both mother and son’s shoulders before heading to the living area to give them space.
Baran when Trinity takes care of her for the first time in her whole life
Baran being a lonely late in life lesbian who’s desperately in love with Trinity, her son’s boss.
The Trees In The Backyard
characters: Baran Al-Hashimi, Trinity Santos & Baran Al-Hashimi’s Son
relationship: Baran Al-Hashimi/Trinity Santos
content: fluff, oneshot, companionship, seizures, housebound Baran Al-Hashimi, landscaper Trinity Santos.
a/n: This is just a mash of a one-shot. I tried to write a proper one for AO3 but after driving across the country has left me depleted in energy. Here it is lol.
Baran is devastated when she has to retire from her career early due to her seizures getting worse. Her medication had stopped working and she had no choice but to have brain surgery. The surgery left her with reduced capacity to perform in high stress environments.
Baran becomes housebound and unable to leave the house due to not being able to drive. She misses driving and going to Pilates where she socialises. Her friend circle is non-existent due to her hiding her disability for years until they found out and left her behind.
Baran relies on Taher, her eighteen year old son, to take her to her appointments and have a break from the house. Essentially, she only leaves the house, twice per week which she enjoys.
Taher decides to not go to college. Instead, he decides to be a trainee landscaper and is employed by Trinity Santos.
Baran is sick of looking at the two dead trees in the backyard but refuses to let Taher to cut them down himself. Taher asks Trinity to help him cut them down which she accepts.
Baran is excited to see another person at the house who isn’t Taher for once. She sees Trinity for the first time. Trinity had come to the backyard wearing a tshirt and work shorts. Her legs were on display with her feet in a pair of steel capped boots as she walked into the yard. Baran finds herself biting her bottom lip as Trinity’s muscles flexed whilst the younger woman carried a chainsaw.
Baran decides to watch Taher and Trinity cut down the trees from the porch. She likes how Trinity is coaching her son to safely cut the trees with the chainsaw. Trinity knows Baran is watching her from the porch. She can see Baran has honey brown curls with brown eyes. The older woman was wearing a black tshirt with a pair of jeans and sneakers. So simple but yet so pretty, Trinity muses.
Trinity and Taher take a break for lunch where Baran insists for them to come in to eat the food she prepared for them. Baran enjoys talking to Trinity and getting to know her much to Taher’s annoyance.
The dead trees have been cut down and turned into mulch for the new garden in its place. Trinity finds herself being invited to help Baran with the garden which she accepted without hesitation.
Trinity finds herself taking Baran out for a trip to the gardening centre. Baran had been counting down the days until the trip to the gardening centre. Taher liked seeing his mother look forward to something in a long time.
Trinity watches Baran’s bright brown eyes look at the flowers in awe as she walked with her through rows of flowers. Trinity finds herself becoming smitten with Baran on the same day.
Over time, Trinity had learned from Taher that his mother used to be an ED doctor until she had to stop working.
During one peaceful morning with Baran, Trinity finds herself asking the older woman if she missed her career. Baran cries whilst telling Trinity that she misses being with people everyday and that she enjoys Trinity’s presence.
Baran and Trinity become close to each other each week. When Trinity isn’t working with Taher, she is taking Baran out for day trips and appointments. Taher relishes the free time and decides to enrol into local community college.
Baran has a seizure in the supermarket and Trinity stays with her throughout the entire minute of the seizure. Trinity gently helps Baran through her postictal period with gentle touches which Baran leans into.
Later in the day, Baran cries with shame over how Trinity saw one of her seizures. Trinity reassures her and comforts her. She learns that Baran likes to be held when the older woman puts her head on her shoulder.
Baran realises she has found her person in Trinity. The trees in the backyard brought Trinity to her.
I’m just randomly writing an AU fic of Trinity as a landscaper whose employee is Baran’s son on a Saturday night. God help me.
Barantos but it’s Baran stepping up to be a bonus mom to Trinity’s baby
Just came across a vampire fanfic for Baran Al-Hashimi and Trinity Santos and I am gagging for the next chapter
The fanfic is named ‘sweeter than honey’ by targcooker on AO3
Went to see three excellent plays at the Schaubühne whilst I was in Berlin for the week.
1. Sabotage
2. Egal
3. Call me Paris
Also, I had a lovely interaction with Lars in the cafe too! He was rehearsing for The Miser and it was great to see him. I’m in Belgium at the same time of the premiere. 😅
In the future, I will definitely go to Berlin just for a week so I can finally see Hamlet or The Miser one day!
