in honor of mr day turning 50 i have middle-aged newt/hermann on the mind. what are they up to. what are they doing. do you think they’ll ever retire

I think Herman is the type of professor who’s still teaching classes until he’s like 90 years old and complains that none of the students know how to use keyboards anymore and they all just use the neural interface now (or whatever new tech gets invented in the pacific rim universe). He would need to be pulled from his office kicking and screaming if anyone dared try to force him to retire.

I think it’s likely Newt also wouldn’t retire, but I can also see him as the type of professor who unsuccessfully retires. He announces he’s gonna retire, starts handing off all his responsibilities, does all the paper work and switches to being a dependent on Herman’s benefits, and the department throws him a big retirement party at the end of the academic year, but he actually still has some projects he’s gonna wrap up in the lab this summer, and then he’s sticking around to see his PhD student that is officially under a different professor wrap up their thesis, and now one of the other professors had to take emergency medical leave so he’s gonna help teach their classes cause he used to teach them anyway, and oh there are actually some very promising results from this last experiment I ran and this lab hasn’t been promised to anyone else so I’m just gonna run one last experiment I swear this is the last one, then oh there’s a new grad student that’s interested in this work I’m doing so they’re just helping me out. Suddenly it’s 3 years after he was suppose to retire and literally nothing has changed, the department never even bother to complete the paperwork for his retirement they just give him back ID access so he stops stealing Herman’s

#newt as one of those professors who has less and less hours as time goes on but he still goes to the university The Whole Day like#if he were still working full time. and if he has truly nothing to do he'll just sit in his office but usually#he finds something to keep him busy. sometimes that's taking over classes as a substitute for absent profs or holding extra lectures becaus#some student asked for his help. or bothering his colleagues. or bothering hermann. or sitting in on others' classes just because#one day he realises that he truly has very little to do so he sorta just....enrolls back into university#what if i already have 9 doctorates (plus a bunch of other phds and more than a dozen honorary doctorates as well). if i want another one#i will get it and nobody can stop me no sir#does he sign up to Hermann's class on purpose? absolutely. does it have anything to do with his newest degree? probably not#does he still work his ass off to do well in Hermann's class just because its *Hermann's*? yeah absolutely#Hermann tries to argue about the dubious ethics of having his husband as a student. it gets brought up with (...hr? the dean? someone idk)#and eventually it is decided that hermann will not be allowed to grade newt but he can take the class. newt thinks thats bs because hermann#would never unfairly grade anyone and *especially* not him. hav you *seen* the edits hermann made to his latest paper? it ended up being#more red ink than white paper after he was done with it. and they think this guy would just pass newt for the sake of their marriage?#hes more likely to divorce me if i fail his class! Been re-listening to all Holmes books during my stay in England, something I haven't done properly in ages. It's still as dear as ever.

helloooo this is a MASTER POST of my Sherlock Holmes annotations, aka shitpost doodles of my favorite parts with occasional headcanons. I will pin this so it's available and update it as I go because this feels like it's becoming a full series, god help me.

I'm reading the stories in the order they occurred (according to Baring-Gould, who I am currently arm wrestling in the astral plane over how many wives Watson had) so that's how I will present them!

EDIT 2: this is basically a webcomic at this point, with ongoing continuity and a romantic storyline that can be enjoyed if you read in order. I did not intend this, but I have Sherlock Holmes disease and there's only one cure (doing this)

EDIT 3: content warning/advertisement depending on your temperament: this series gets into one of my big interests, historical queerness, period accurate homophobia, and how laws around queerness affected lived experience. it also has things that you can expect from a Sherlock Holmes story like: drug use involving needles, violence, flagrant use of old timey guns, and people dying in shocking and mysterious ways!
