This blog needs a good scrubbing!
Since I've pretty much forsaken all other social media, I'm going to tidy this blog up and hopefully something good will come from it. Maybe I'll make a new friend or really get back into reading like I want.

Classes are canceled due to the impending storms headed for New Orleans. That includes online courses. Many of my professors have revised the schedules and moved due dates. I want to use this to my advantage and get ahead if I can (granted I don’t lose power or/and internet). So far, I have to report to work, but I’m hoping to get an update in the morning stating otherwise. We’re prepared as best we can. I wanted to finish the laundry, but my energy level has not been great this weekend. The threat of a storm always makes me anxious. Especially because the anniversary of Katrina is this week. I hope everyone is being safe and stays safe.
The other day my family and I went to Disneyland (and it was my dad’s birthday)! I forgot to go see Anna and Elsa, but that’s okay! Who’s your favorite Disney Princess? 👑👗
It’s Elsa for sure. Tiana is a close second and then Ariel (Little Mermaid) rounds out my top 3. I’m crossing my fingers that they release Pop Funkos of Queen Anna and Snow Queen Elsa!

was bored, saw @thereadingchallengechallenge had an open tag for this and it looked like fun!

I’ve been seeing quizzes going around and I love doing them so I made my own special one for booklr: what booklr are you? Let me know what you got and share it with others :)
I got The Slumper. It’s too accurate. Almost scary how much. The best takeaway: “If talking about books or just loving them from a distance is something you enjoy then you’re still a bookworm” and “Also the pictures of your pets? Adorable”. You know because I occasionally post images of my sweet boy Jensen.
Fairy Tale February 2020 - February 1st to February 29th
Do you love fairy tales? Then consider joining me for Fairy Tale February 2020! It’s an opportunity to spend a month reading any and all things fairy tale related, whether that’s original tales, retellings, nonfiction, or anything else. Use the tag #fairytalefebruary2020 to post updates, reviews, photos, recommendations, and more.
Feel free to participate as much or as little as you like. I’ve created the list of reading challenges below for anyone who would like them. But you certainly don’t have to follow them to be part of the event! The goal is to have fun!
Reading Challenges:
A fairy tale collection
A retelling of “The Twelve Dancing Princesses” (I have a recommendation post here if you’re interested)
A fairy tale picture book
A non-European fairy tale
A retelling from a different POV than the original tale
A fairy tale you’re unfamiliar with
A LGBT+ retelling
A different variation of your favorite childhood tale
A retelling of an underrated tale (I have a recommendation post here if you’re interested)
A retelling of your favorite fairy tale
A fairy tale from your cultural background
A nonfiction book about fairy tales
I will be posting more recommendations some of these challenges during the event. I also highly suggest SurLaLune Fairy Tales for finding different variations of the stories.
I want this new year to be full of ballets, botanical gardens, art museums, live music, ladurée desserts, literature, black and white films, traveling, fresh flowers, cooking healthy meals, finding beautiful antiques, and romance.
I plan on participating in @alwaysbringabookwithyou NYE readathon. However, the time zone difference will prove interesting as I’m in CST and 5PM GMT means 11AM for me, so I’ve decided that starting at 5PM my time works best. I didn't think to take a picture of my (tentative) TBR list, but it’s as follows:
Convenience Store Woman by Sayaka Murata
Kinshu - Autumn Brocade by Teru Miyamoto
Fruits Basket Another vol 1-3 by Natsuki Takaya
Possibly something by Celeste Bradley
I decided to keep with short books, books checked out from the library for too long and books collecting dust! Unfortunately, none are set in the 20s, but I have decided to challenge myself by attempting to read 2,020 pages during the readthon so there’s that. It’s going to be fun nonetheless!
I’ll be on Tumblr off and on, doing my best to interact with other participants. So feel free to chat. Most of all have fun!
So I’m bringing in 2020 in the most low-key, comfortable way possible: at home, in sweat pants, drinking hot chocolate, participating in a reading challenge (?) while cuddling with my cat. AND My husband is making my favorite soup. Honestly, after the chaos of the holidays, the fact that I get to stay at home and be braless on the first day of the new decade is true bliss for me.
I don’t have any specific resolutions for the new year. Just a personal declaration to be present and do better. I want to be more available to those I care for. I also want to strive to do better. I realize that’s extremely vague, but I feel like I’ve developed a really negative attitude over the last few months. It’s lead to stress, irritability and strained relationships. I want to improve upon this. This also applies to school. I let some mild health issues and job stress get in the way of fully committing myself to doing well this semester and I truly regret it. However, I intend for the next year to be productive and successful!
One other personal goal I plan to work on is rekindling my passion for reading. Save for Tumblr, I have deleted all other social media accounts. I am hoping that being more active within the booklr community will help with this.
I look forward to all 2020 has in store. I wish everyone a very happy and lovely new year!
Announcing Fairy Tale February 2020
Hello, everyone! For a long time I’ve wanted to host an event relating to fairy tales and retellings. So now I’m finally doing it!
Fairy Tale February 2020 will run from February 1st to 29th.
The goal is to read as many fairy tale related books as you want. Fairy tale collections, illustrated versions, retellings, and nonfiction about fairy tales are all fair game as well as anything else you can come up with. I will also be posting a list of reading challenges for anyone who wants something more structured. You can participate as much or as little as you like. Want to read 20 books for the month? Awesome! Want to read one book over the course of the month? Also awesome!
Post about the books you’re reading too! The tag for the event is #fairytalefebruary2020. Any type of posts are welcome, whether it’s photos, reviews, recommendation lists, text posts, or whatever else.
I’ll make another post closer to the start date with the reading challenge list and any other details. But I wanted to get the word out now so people would know. I hope some of you will join me for this event!
Omg this is everything! Going to start putting together my TBR list ASAP. Can’t wait to participate!
Book Haul: Christmas
It’s not Christmas in my household without a book haul! These are all from my parents, and they picked off a list a gave them. I’m so excited for all of them! My plan is to read Jane Austen at Home first. And I’m going to save Deathless and House of Salt and Sorrows for February when I host a Fairy Tale themed event (there’s an announcement about that coming soon, so keep your eyes open). The Queen of Nothing is one of the books I’ve looked forward to all year, and I’m really happy my mom got the Barnes & Noble exclusive edition. It’s so pretty! The Idiot has been on all of my Christmas and birthday lists for at least two years now, so I’m excited that I finally got it. And both Bitter Orange and The Light Between Worlds sound like ones I’ll love.
Happy holidays, everyone!
What a lovely haul! 📚 Really looking forward to that Fairy Tale themed event though 🤓
Bookish NYE
Is anyone else planning to have a low key New Year's Eve this year? Would you be interested if I hosted a bookish virtual party here on Tumblr? We could play tag games and do a readathon/readalong?
Just an idea!
This sounds fabulous! I really want 2020 to be the year I rekindle my passion for reading and intend on doing so by starting the year doing just that. Look forward to joining in!
Enjoy this picture of Jensen napping on his new bread bed!
The Twelve Dancing Princesses
It’s been quite a while since I made fairy tale retelling related post. I really miss doing Fairy Tale Fridays, and I’m planning to start up again as soon as the semester is over. But for now I thought I’d post some retelling recommendations for my favorite fairy tale!
Wildwood Dancing by Juliet Marillier
The Door in the Hedge by Robin McKinley
Entwined by Heather Dixon
The Firethorn Crown by Lea Doué
Princess of the Midnight Ball by Jessica Day George
The Thirteenth Princess by Diane Zahler
12 Dancing Princesses retellings are my favorite and Wildwood Dancing took my breath away! So sad that series remains unfinished. However, now I have some a few more books to add to my TBR list!
I’m revamping this space
Tumblr is the only “social media” I use anymore and I want to better utilize it. I’m going to redo my theme and add some things. I want to strive to post original content and interact more with people whereas I've always been hesitant in doing so before.
One of my birthday resolutions was also to read more, so I’m hoping that being more active here will encourage that goal and provide some kind of accountability.
Wish me luck!
anyone got any recs for books about selkies?
Yes! Tides by Betsy Cornwell. Soo good!
Also The Brides of Rollrock Island by Margo Lanagan Highly recommend!
Daughter of the Sea by Berlie Doherty
Also The Secret of Roan Inish is a good movie about selkies if that interests you.
Happy reading!
