Harpies are a very empathetic species and can understand those around them very well, which is advantageous for a harpy remaining with their clan but also helps those who have chosen to live amongst muggles and wizards as they are able to know which harpy tendencies they must suppress in order to achieve the level of acceptance by society that they desire. Additionally, they are able to understand the power dynamics of a group they found themselves and seamlessly insinuate themselves into the group. This allows harpies to be ruthless and successful in business.

These intuitions aid harpies in a variety of other occupations. Many find themselves as bounty hunters, detectives or bail bondsperson, although this is also because it is the only activity an urban harpy can enjoy that is close to a hunt. Of course, harpies who have never lived with a clan don’t always fall into these patterns.

iola doesn’t actively keep tabs on her family after phineas and elladora die, they were the only ones that she had an attachment to, but she’s still a member of wizarding society so of course she hears things about the family and she probably still talks about them with the same fondness phineas’ portrait talks about sirius after his death

she hears about sirius ending in azkaban and feels a sort of sadness that she can’t explain, not a sadness that someone like mcgonagall feels as an adult influence in his life who can’t help but question how he ended up that way but the sadness of someone who got out and thought he had as well

whereas she just stops hearing about regulus, about the black family heir, who’s future everyone was bragging about and after a while of letting herself listen out for new with none coming she feels this weight in the bottom of her stomach because she knows, she just knows that something must have happened

Mary spends her life developing new types of magic, beyond the traditional potions, spells and jinxes. From there she learns computer code, C++, and how to write spells into programs (she uses a loophole in the law regarding charmed objects, by making her own computer so it is not considered a muggle item).
