Or Do You Not Think So Far Ahead? || Jarley Chatzy
WHO: Marley Rose (ft. Jake Puckerman)
WHEN: Post top-secret Glee Club meeting
WHERE: Jakeâs house
WHAT: Jake makes an attempt at comforting Marley and bridging the distance that has grown between them since Mondayâs incident. Things donât go exactly as planned.
WARNINGS: Adult/sexual situation(s)
Jake unlocked his front door and stepped inside, holding open the door for Marley. He couldn't think of a time that she'd be over to his house when his mom was out before. It was a god send. With everything that had happened this week, he knew that they needed to reconnect. It could've been all in his head, but Marley had seemed distant this week and Jake blamed what happened. After locking the front door, he tossed his jacket onto the back of the couch. "Let's go back to my room and listen to some music," he suggested with a smile, reaching for her hand to take and lacing their fingers together.
Marley blew out a breath as Jake invited her inside, the emotional upheaval from their top secret glee club meeting still fresh in her mind. Between the tension with Unique and the realization once again that something irrevocable had happened to them all, she was feeling out of it. And with her mother working her second job that evening, she didn't want to be stuck at home alone again. So of course Jake's invite had come at the right time. Though the fact that they were, in fact, completely alone together had not yet sunk in. "What kind of music do you have in mind?" she asked, dropping her backpack off by the front door before taking his hand. The familiarity of such a situation gave her comfort. A reminder of days spent laying on his bed, playing Bad Piggies and Song Pop, and at one point desperately hoping he might kiss her. She could use something tangible and predictable right about then.
Jake "Something calm," he nodded, sending her a warm smile. He flicked on the lights and dropped his backpack once they reached his room. "Here, why don't you pick?" he suggested, handing her his iPhone. He turned on the mini speaker he'd gotten with his last phone before going over to his bed. With his desk chair still piled high with clothes, the only place left to sit was his bed. He slipped his shoes off as he took a seat and pushed himself up to lay against the pillows on one side of the bed. His eyes watched Marley as she scrolled through his music, noting that she looked tired. But guys weren't supposed to say that to girls without pissing them off. He wished he knew what to say, but he was so much better with showing than speaking. Once she picked something, he patted the spot on the bed next to him.
Marley "Good thinking," she smiled back, taking his offered iPhone to scroll through his music collection. The great thing about Jake was that he could continue to surprise her, be it the measures he took to make a simple holiday special for her to his music collection. She found an acoustic version of a song she knew he liked, and pressed play on that before turning back to where he now sat on the bed. She was so tired. And the music was really making that obvious, unfortunately. Cuddling sounded like the perfect remedy so she climbed in, settling in the spot beside him. "I didn't think you were a fan of covers," she teased lightly.
Jake sighed happily when she settled on a cover that he loved, one that he was thinking of doing for Glee and for Marley. As she came to join him, he held his arms open for her and pulled her into his side. "I didn't think you'd pick Frank Ocean," he teased back. Shifting onto his side, Jake rested his forehead to hers as he breathed in and let the music calm his heart. He brought his free hand up to hold her cheek, brushing her hair behind her ear. As the music moved through him and as he felt the presence of Marley beside him, Jake pressed in for a slow kiss that had him inhaling against her cheek.
Marley chuckled softly, then sighed as she settled into his side, closing her eyes. Whoever this singer was, they were âgoodâ. And her soothing voice was helping to melt away some of tension she'd brought back with her to Jake's house. She supposed the fact that she was not alone probably had something to do with that as well, but still. Her eyes opened briefly to Jake as he brushed her hair aside, and for a moment, she felt a pang of guilt. She hadn't exactly been the best girlfriend to him as of late, and she blamed that largely on the fact that her mind was so... consumed. There was just so much, âtooâ much on her mind. She tried to push it back though as he pressed in for a kiss, her eyes closing once more. If there was something that could chase away the dark and gray, it was her guilty pleasure. Her fingers curled into his shirt as they slowly broke apart, her nose nuzzling his.
Jake smiled to himself as she nuzzled his nose. This right here was what he needed, to be with her and feel her close. How else could he show her how he felt? How could anything start to feel right again without it? His hand moved from her cheek back into her long hair as he pressed in with another kiss, his mouth opening hers to his own so he could meld his tongue to hers.
Marley smiled softly as well, curling up closer to Jake as his hand moved back to her hair, a move he had to know by now had the immediate effect of relaxing her. She loved her hair being played with. But with his next kiss came a flare of warmth, coloring her cheek a rosy shade of pink and causing her to breathe in against his cheek. The music, already so soft to begin with, and its lyrics seemed to cease making much sense as the taste of him clouded her senses instead.
Jake shivered lightly as her grip on his shirt grew stronger. Slowly, he moved from laying on his side next to her and rolled to rest half of his weight on her with his leg between hers. He moved his arm out from beneath her so that he could hold his weight up on his elbow. The music, the feel of her beneath him, and the taste of her on his lips calmed him more than anything else had that week. He hadn't told her in so many words, but he wanted her to know how crazy he'd gone when he couldn't find her outside of the school, and the relief when he got his arms around her again.
Marley felt her body tense in a way that was still largely foreign to her as his shifted on the bed, partially covering her own. It wasn't as though they'd never made out before. But... well, it was rare it ever happened with a bed involved. And admittedly, she wasn't sure how to address it without totally ruining the moment. So instead she kissed him again, focusing instead in how his body pressed to hers somehow anchored her into the present moment rather than letting her mind wander into more distressing territory. Her hand go of his shirt to hold his face, holding him close as she broke apart again to release a shaky breath. "How many covers do you have on here?" she asked with a quiet, shaky laugh.
Jake licked his lips as he moved from hers down to her neck. "Just the duvet," he said. "We can get rid of it." His teeth lightly grazed the skin of her pulse point where he could feel the way her heartbeat rose. He kissed his way up her neck to catch her lips again, a hum escaping him.
Marley laughed again, though it was immediately punctuated with a sharp intake of breath. The same flare of warmth occurred again. "Very funny, I meant the music..." Her correction was quickly cut off with another kiss, words muffled into an indeterminate sound. Her heart was starting to beat faster, no longer matching the serene beat of the music playing. "Jake?" she asked as they stopped for another breath.
Jake hadn't really expected her to be making jokes during but she was kissing him back just as well. It was only when he ran out of breath and things got too hot for so many clothes that he pulled back. "Mhm?" he hummed, nuzzling her skin as he kissed across her collarbone in between breaths.
Marley didn't know what exactly she wanted to ask. Or say. Hadn't the whole point of the glee club meeting been about saying what you needed to say, before it was too late? What if she didn't know what those things were? Her mind spun between the suddenly life and death sounding debacle in her head, and the way Jake pressed heated kisses to skin she hadn't been aware had become exposed between their arrival and now. Kissing him seemed easier than trying to figure out how to talk to him about what had happened, unfortunately. "Um... mm... nevermind," she mumbled, cheeks growing rosy again. As her body started to instead squirm beneath him, she tried to coax him back to meet her lips again.
Jake kissed his way back up to her lips, wondering what she had been about to say but deciding it probably didn't matter if she hadn't said it in the first place. Everything that he wanted to say to her was in his touches, his kisses. His hand left her hair and slowly ran down her arm. He stopped at her waist before running that same hand up along her side until he could cup her breast in his hand.
Marley simultaneously felt that flare turn into something that felt much... darker... and felt a part of her mind panic. Her body reacted in a way that seemed to both betray her and make her feel good. She swelled with the touch but reached up to grab the hand on her chest to coax back. "Wait, wait, wait," she broke their kiss to breathe out, swallowing thickly as she tried to catch her breath.
Jake 's brow furrowed when she moved up into him like she liked it - but moved his hand back down to her waist. He pulled back at her wait, moving up onto both of his elbows. "Is something wrong?" he murmured, eyes searching hers.
Marley felt her cheeks flush for an entirely different reason - embarrassment. "Sorry," she mumbled, averting her eyes from his gaze. "I'm sorry. I'm just... nothing's wrong." She shook her head, and tried to shake off the faux pas as well. "We've just never done âthisâ before."
Jake 's brow furrowed further as she apologized - and then a second time. "It seems like something's wrong," he said, nuzzling her nose. He pulled back as he meaning registered. A quiet chuckle escaped him. "That's why it's called a first time, love," he murmured, pressing a kiss to her warm cheek and then nipping the corner of her jaw.
Marley asked, "First time?" Another soft breath of a laugh left her at the nip to her skin, hands dropping to resume their previous spot holding onto the front of his shirt. It was certainly a first time for a number of things that had just occurred.
Jake "Yeah, first time," he nodded, moving to lay on top of her, rather than just on her side. This way he could settle between her legs and that closeness only grew. His forehead rested to hers as he took in a breath. "I love you," he murmured. "Let me show you."
Marley had thought the warmth of the room was getting a bit much before, but the weight of him atop her made her cheeks almost feel like they were burning. What was wrong with her? With her body? The way it seemed to crave such a closeness while her mind seemed to be fighting for some kind of space to breathe? It was confusing. But how could she deny Jake when he said something as profound as âthatâ? "How?" she asked in a small voice.
Jake pulled back and reached his hand behind his head to pull his shirt over his head to toss aside. He breathed out in relief at the cool air hitting his warm skin. His gaze softened as he looked down at her, moving back down onto his elbows as he gently kissed her lips. "Like this," he said, rocking his hips into hers as his hand reached down to start dragging her skirt up.
Marley swallowed hard as Jake removed his shirt, revealing the well-taken-care-of body underneath it. She'd seen him shirtless before but the context had been different. Her stomach clenched in a way she couldn't define. And when his hips rocked into hers, it was like her body was betraying her all over again. A breath forced its way out of her as she trembled, her mind reeling. It couldn't be âthatâ first time he was talking about, right? This was just... fooling around. Just experimenting. And that was okay right? Maybe? She wrestled with that the same way her own body wrestled with the onset of sensations she felt. Even her hands seemed to fret over what to do - whether to touch him or to push him back.
Jake could feel her nerves, but did his best to try to assuage them with his kisses. His hand ran along the soft skin of her hip, bringing their cores closer together with another grind of his hips. There wasn't a need for words. Moving his hand inward, Jake cupped her core.
Marley felt heat bloom deep in her lower belly, frightening enough for her to channel the rush of adrenaline into rolling them over and in the process moving Jake's hand out from between her legs. Her heart beat wildly as she caught her breath, unfortunately probably looking every bit as frazzled as she felt, between her mussed up hair and clothes, and her expression. "I'm sorry," she mumbled, reaching up to pull the strap on her dress back up over her shoulder and adjust the rest of her outfit accordingly. "This is just... a âlotâ, all at once."
Jake hummed as she rolled them over and straddled his hips, but it was cut off when she moved his hand. His eyes opened and he looked up to her, confusion clear in his expression. "Wait... Didn't you know," his words trailed off. Jake moved to sit up against his headboard. "Marley, don't you want this with me?" he asked, reaching a hand up to brush his thumb against her blush colored cheek.
Marley didn't, in all honesty, know what she wanted. Which only served to make the situation more difficult to navigate. When you went through a harrowing experience that left you considering all the what ifs in your life, then certainly that was a sign that you needed clearer priorities. That you needed to âliveâ more. She should've walked away from things wanting to be closer to the people in her life, to be closer to Jake. But the second things got too serious or heated, she became skittish and pulled back. And when she stopped doing something as mindless as giving into what her body seemed to want, that's when her thoughts picked up again - the tension between her and Unique, the anxiety-ridden afternoons spent alone at home, Ryder... "I... I don't know," she answered lamely, feeling just like that same girl who had chickened out in the hotel back during Valentine's Day. "I love you. But this is a lot to take in all at once. It's overwhelming, just..." She couldn't even find the words to describe it, gesturing to the entirety of her body and then between the two of them. "I'm sorry-"
Jake reached his hands up to her arms, soothingly running his hands along them as he tried to understand where she was coming from. When Valentine's Day had fallen through, he'd understood and didn't care about the lost money. But after the school shooting, when she started to feel far from him, he thought this might fix it. When she apologized again, he cut her off. "Hey, it's okay," he said. He blew out a breath and reached down to help her off of his hips so that his dick could stop freaking out about being so close to her. Jake sat on the edge of his bed. "You don't have to apologize.. I just - Ever since Monday when I went crazy thinking something happened to you, all I've wanted is to feel closer to you," he said, turning his eyes back to her. "This is how I do that, or how I want to with you," he said. "I don't want to pressure you into anything, I just don't really get why you keep pulling back. Overwhelming can be good. Doing what feels good can be incredible." He sighed and leaned in to rest his forehead to hers. "I want you so bad, Marley," he murmured. "I just want to feel you - make love to you so you can know how I feel."
Marley felt bad, she really did. Sometimes she wondered if her life would be easier if she was just more like other girls at school. The ones who didn't freak out at their bodies reacting to physical touch in ways that felt 'too strong' or 'too good'. The ones who could make out with a guy or have sex with them without feeling like they were betraying themselves somehow. But... that just wasn't who she was. "I'm sorry," she said quieter as he pressed his forehead to hers. "I'm just... I'm not ready. I love you, I do, and I know you just want to ââshowâ me that you love me, but I don't think I'm ready for that..."
Jake quietly sighed again and pulled back to look at her. "I love you too," he said, reaching back for his shirt so he could pull it back on. "This is the longest I've been with a girl without having sex," he mused, "By like - months."
Marley 's brow furrowed a moment. "What do you mean?" she asked, slightly confused.
Jake 's eyes popped open wider for a moment as he realized he'd just put his foot in his mouth. "Nothing," he said, pulling down his shirt. "Forget about it-"
Marley "No, Jake - tell me what you mean," she said more firmly. How long exactly was he talking here?
Jake just had to spin his words the right way. He looked at her with a soft smile, resting a hand on her knee. "I've been with you the longest out of anyone. And I don't see that ending anytime soon," he said.
Marley wasn't an idiot. She could see he was dancing around the subject. And while she might've been naive enough in the past to overlook that, something about it right then just... ticked her off. "How long?" she asked again, an edge coming to her voice.
Jake "How long have we been together? A few months now," he said, swallowing at the change in the way she looked at him.
Marley "That's not what I mean, Jake and you know it. How long??" she persisted.
Jake "Marley, it's not like I keep stats," he said, shifting on the bed. He pursed his lips and reached a hand to scratch the back of his neck. "I don't know... Maybe a month was the longest?"
Marley A month. A âmonthâ?? She suddenly felt sick to her stomach, pulling his hand from her knee as she got up from his bed to find her shoes to pull back on. "I think I'm gonna go."
Jake 's hand dropped like a lead weight. Why was she so upset? "What? Why?" he asked. "Marley, come on." Was she seriously slut shaming him? He let out a nervous laugh. "You knew I wasn't a virgin before we started dating. Doesn't it matter more that I don't care how long I wait for you??"
Marley "Of course it matters, but what matters more is âwhyâ you're waiting so long for me," she answered in frustration, grabbing her shoes out from under his bed before bracing her hands on her hips. "Are you with me because you want sex or are you with me because you want to be with me?" She was probably grossly overreacting but... to go through the embarrassment of not being able to bring herself to have sex with her boyfriend only to be reminded that he could've gotten it 'easier' from someone else? It stirred up her emotions a bit too much.
Jake Now it was Jake's turn to be angry. "Are you freaking kidding me?" he asked, standing up too. "Marley, I love you. If I wanted sex, I would-"
Marley "You would what? Huh?" Her anger flared, charged by his own strong reaction. She dared him to answer her. "Find some other girl who's willing to give it up quicker than your girlfriend?"
Jake "If I only wanted sex, then I wouldn't be with you," he burst out. And seeing the reaction it caused in her was like sticking in a needle in a balloon. "Marley," he said quieter, reaching his hands out to try to take hers. "I'm sorry, I-"
Marley pursed her lips against the immediate urge to cry that followed his blunt statement. She immediately pulled her hands away and put distance between the two of them. "No," she shook her head, already moving for the door, "you know what? Go be with one of those girls. Have fun." Again, probably an overreaction but right then, she wanted to be anywhere but there.
OCC: I like this story, it seems very interesting to see another approach to what happened in glee with Ryder and Marley. I would like to know what the plot? excellent work of both
OOC:
Hey there! Thank you for stopping by and reading the start of our 1x1. Iâm glad youâre enjoying it so far. :)
Basically, this is like a re-do from the Shooting Star episode of season 4, with some adjustments to allow for a different outcome, obviously. Thereâs no real set plot that we have planned but we are writing in such a way to answer these questions we had for ourselves:Â
What wouldâve happened if Marley had been with Ryder during the âschool shootingâ rather than Jake?Â
What little and seemingly insignificant detail changes couldâve resulted in a different outcome?
How do people deal with the aftermath of trauma?Â
How are their relationships affected?
This story will be following how Marley and Ryder deal with the aftermath of their experiences, and show how sometimes the worst day(s) of your life can either build up your relationships or tear them apart.
Ryder paused as he reached the auditorium doors. Could he really go in there? Could he face all of them when he was so sure one of them had just ripped his heart out Indiana Jones style and stomped on it? He sighed and rested his forehead to the door as he listened to the muffled music coming from inside. It was a song he recognized, one that he actually liked. And one that seemed to cut to the bone of what he was so frustrated with lately.Â
His hand paused on the door as he heard Marley singing with Kitty inside. As quietly as possible, he opened the door and snuck inside so he could hear the words clearly.Â
âHave no fear for giving in
Have no fear for giving overâŚâ
Sam took over to finish the verse before leading everyone in the chorus. And thatâs when Ryder knew that out of all of the places he could go, right now, this was still his best option. âSay what you need to say,â he sang as he walked into the room feeling dejected. His eyes swept over everyone, but they were caught up in the music. All except Marley and Jake as they noticed him walk in. Heâd told Jake his plan this morning, and in return been made fun of by Jake. But there werenât any laughs now as he stepped over towards the risers.Â
As the rest of the club recognized another voice being added to the mix, Ryder and Blaine took the final verse together. âEven if your hands are shaking⌠and your faith is broken. Even as the eyes are closing, do it with a heart wide openâŚâ As Ryder took his seat in front of Jake and Marley, he felt a pair of arms wrap around his shoulders, surprising him. Jake must have told her about the whole Katie thing. He closed his eyes for a moment, rubbing his hand over her arm before looking up and pushing down all of his disappointment to be there for the Glee club. âSay what you need to sayâŚâ
Even amid the singing and music, Marley had heard the auditorium doors open and turned to see the last of their missing party show. Her expression, if possible, softened even further. Ryder had been left out there alone, waiting for a âKatieâ who would never show up, as it turned out. She had tried so hard to facilitate opportunities for the truth to come out and yet... nothing. A part of her knew she couldnât take blame here. It wasnât her truth to tell. And if Unique decided that she couldnât go through with it, then Marley had to respect that, regardless of her feelings on the matter.
Still, once Ryder joined them, she felt compelled to offer the last bit of comfort she could given the situation. She leaned forward to wrap her arms around his neck and shoulders from behind, hoping she could infuse enough into that squeeze to let him know that he mightâve been left alone out there in the hall, deserted by âKatieâ, but he wasnât truly alone. He had his friends in glee club. And he had her.
â... say what you need to say, say what you need to say.â
Ryder thought he was used to time passing slowly. In an NFL game, five minutes could take an hour. And in one of the WMHS games, five minutes was nearly half a quarter. Besides, the last five minutes of class on a Friday felt like the clock was frozen in ice. But now time was passing differently. It was half as stressful as the time heâd spent hiding with Marley in the cafeteria kitchen. He could feel his heartbeat in his throat. His palms were sweaty, leading him to shake them out as he jumped around.Â
But the five minutes did pass. And no one showed.Â
He picked his backpack up off the floor to sling over his shoulder again. Pulling out his phone, he saw two texts: one from Jake and one from Kitty. Radio silence from Katie. âWhere are you?â he texted, waiting, begging his phone to even show that annoying grey cloud to tell him that she was at least writing him back. Sheâd promised. Sheâd promised that she would meet him, and now twice sheâd canceled on him.Â
Katie wasnât coming.Â
Ryder knew the whole Glee club was waiting on him. Mr. Schue wasnât able to get out of the all school assembly, but he knew where the New Directioners would be. So when another minute had passed without even the sound of footsteps, Ryder tried to push down his disappointment. He tried, but instead found himself taking off at a run to get to the auditorium where he at least wouldnât be alone.Â
âI canât tell him itâs me,â Unique told her once theyâd moved away from the others and out of earshot. âHeâll hate me. Heâll never speak to me again. He might even punch me in the face. Oh god, honey, he would-â
âUnique, he wouldnât punch you in the face!â Marley protested, though she quieted down when she realized people were looking at them funny. âYou have to tell him. He deserves to know the truth, especially in light of recent events.â
âIâve already chickened out twice... I canât face him, Marls.â
Marleyâs heart sank, but she didnât get a chance to try to change Uniqueâs mind before Jake came over to break up the tension. âI think weâre about to get started, ladies,â he said, grabbing Marleyâs hand to lead her over to the risers with him. Marley gave one last look toward her friend before following after him. She tried not to think about it once the jazz band started up the opening chords to a soothing John Mayer number. Blaine had picked a good starting point for sure.
âTake all of your wasted honor... every little past frustration...â Blaineâs voice started them out, all of them just listening and taking in the message of those first few lines. â... take all of your so called problems, better put âem in quotations.â Marleyâs eyes closed as Jakeâs arm wrapped around her and she chimed in to harmonize with Blaineâs voice.Â
âSay what you mean to say... say what you mean to say... say you mean to say... say what you mean to say...â
Her eyes opened to meet Uniqueâs across the way, the tension between them making her stomach twist uncomfortably. Why couldnât she just come forward? What did she have to hold on to this secret that wasnât even hers to hold? Why couldnât she say what she meant to say? Okay, this was getting a little too deep, even for a top secret glee club meeting.Â
This was it. Ryder couldnât give Katie any more chances after this. It was too much, it was driving him crazy. Every ounce of hope that he put into meeting her, into getting just another message from her was starting to bring shadows into his head. But she had promised (again) to meet him in the hallway outside of the choir room right when the school assembly started. Ryder just hadnât expected to run into Coach Sylvester.Â
âShouldnât you be at the mandatory assembly?â Sylvester said, looking bored. But Ryder questioned the box of things she was carrying and the look of something deeper in her eyes. She didnât look ready to maul a student, to maul him in particular. âWeâre having a top secret Glee meeting instead,â he said, âDealing with the whole - â He broke off so he wouldnât have to actually say the word âshootingâ. Sue nodded, âGuess you better get there then.â Ryderâs eyebrows rose, âYouâre not going to write me up? Give me detention?â Sue turned to leave but answered as she walked away, âI donât work here anymore.â
Woah. Ryder figured that was what happened when you brought a gun into a high school and it went off, even if it was an accident. As Sylvester left again, he blew out a breath and tossed his backpack against the row of lockers to begin his wait. Five minutes. Heâd give her five minutes after the assembly start time and then heâd give up. But for now? All he had to do was nervously wait for her. What if it was who he thought it was? What if it wasnât? What if it wasnât even someone in Glee? What if this was some long, stupid football prank? He had to know.
âEverything looks good,â Kitty confirmed to Marley as they surveyed the small set up they had in the auditorium for their top-secret glee club meeting. The jazz band, in usual fashion, had agreed to ditch so they could break out their arsenal of feel-good songs to sing together, and a few choir benches had been shoved off in the wings, so theyâd been able to pull them back on stage for the event as well. It mightâve been small and largely impromptu, but frankly, Marley didnât want to sit in on a big mediation assembly where they talked about gun-related violence or what the schoolâs new policy on situations involving an active shooter was. She just... wanted to be with the people who mattered most to her.
Only problem was that everyone in glee club had showed up except for two.
âHave you seen Ryder?â Marley asked as she glanced back to auditorium doors, then to the wings. Kitty shook her head. âSomeone told him to be here, I know that much,â the blonde shrugged before walking off to meet Artie. Marley sighed, feeling a little bit of anxiety settle in with the lack of her friendâs appearance. She was so distracted that she didnât even notice the kiss to her cheek, or her boyfriend until he had moved to stand in front of her.
âHey,â Jake chuckled, trying to catch her gaze as he wrapped his arms around her waist. âWhereâs that head of yours?â Marley gave him an apologetic look. âSorry,â she mumbled, âhave you seen Ryder? Weâre supposed to start any minute now...â Jake shrugged as well, making her sigh. âI hope heâs coming.âÂ
It was then that one of their two missing numbers showed up - Unique walked on stage, looking a mixture of frazzled and upset. âHey, everything okay?â Marley pulled out of Jakeâs grasp to meet her friend at the risers. Unique shook her head, looking close to tears. âI couldnât do it, Marley. I canât,âshe said quietly, her voice quivering. Marleyâs brow furrowed in confusion. âDo what?â she asked.
A smile broke out across his face when she accepted his offer, feeling relief that neither of them would have to face being alone just yet. âGreat,â he said, turning to start walking back to his car. âOkay, so no horses that go up and down,â he nodded. He raised a brow at her challenge. âDeal, swinging contest it is.â Looking across the street, he saw the park reasonably empty. Ryder took Marleyâs hand and rushed back across the street. As soon as they had crossed, he let go. âBeat you there!â he laughed, taking off a loping run.Â
Admittedly, he hadnât expected her to take off like a freaking bullet. âYou could take my spot as wide receiver,â he said through his breaths as he reached the swings a moment behind her. âPretty sure the team has had girls on it before,â he mused, waggling his eyebrows at her playfully. As she took one of the swings, he took the one beside her and started the back and forth pushing to get higher and higher.Â
âWait, where are we-â She was cut off as Ryder rushed them across the deserted street, then announced his intention to, as he said, âbeat her thereâ. âOh, not on my watch!â she shouted with a laugh, taking off after him. While her foray into disordered eating may have sidelined her a bit from more vigorous activities - glee club dance rehearsals, gym class, general running around town - sheâd gained strength and stamina since then. And a greater lung capacity from all of that practice with singing in glee club. It still surprised her though that she was able to overtake him on their way toward the swings.
âI still donât think I know nearly enough about football to try to attempt getting myself on the team,â she joked back as she grabbed what she thought was the best swing out of the pair, then started pumping her legs to get a good, strong swing going. âWhoever swings the highest doesnât have to pay for celebratory milkshakes!â
~*~
The rest of the afternoon seemed to melt away into laughter and silly contests - who could swing the highest, who could jump the farthest out of their swings, who could beat whom to the kiddie slide first - but it was just the sort of silliness she needed (and that he needed too) to help her forget that her world had changed any at all since that fateful Monday afternoon.
âLike a ghost?â Ryder asked, brow furrowed. Yeah, that was a bit out of reach for him at the moment. But he liked the thought that she would come back if the kids really needed her. He shared a laugh with her over the thought at least. âSee thatâs what I think. And I think that they find each other back in the chalk paintings, like they meet there again. That tea place they go to is totally a date,â he said. He smiled to himself at the sound of her laugh again. It was good to see her smiling, and he knew it felt good to smile.Â
Tossing out their trash, he held the door for her before following her out into the theaterâs foyer. âNah, if they made a sequel, it probably wouldnât end up the way we want it,â he agreed. Ryder held the door again to walk out with her, but they didnât get very far before they both paused and he moved to stand in front of her. His stomach was growling and he knew that he didnât want to go home yet or to be alone. Shuffling his feet with his hands in his pockets, he tilted his head and asked, âDo you want to go grab some food? I can give you a ride home after, we can speculate which of us would win in a merry-go-round race?â He didnât know if sheâd be comfortable eating out, but she had shared some food with him and maybe this was just the next step.
They made their way outside the building and while it seemed the moment, however long it had lasted, was over, Marley didnât particularly like the idea of heading back home so soon. Home was still empty, and quiet. Two things she didnât want to be facing on her own at the moment. At his suggestion of food, she looked back to the bus stop. Another bus back to her neighborhood wouldnât be back for at least a couple hours anyhow, so it was either wandering the streets by herself or finding more to do with Ryder. Frankly, she preferred to go with the latter.
âI could eat,â she nodded, stuffing her hands into the pockets of her jacket. âIâd like to point out though that I have the slight disadvantage of getting motion sickness easily, so thereâs no way Iâd win at a merry-go-round race.â She smiled a little, falling back in step with him as they made their way towards his car. âHowever, Iâll raise you one with a swinging contest. I can get pretty high up, if I do say so myself.â
Whenever a cannonball went off again the few other times in the movie, Ryder noticed how they would lean in closer to each other before gravitating back apart like magnets turned the wrong way. But once that was over, Ryder was able to get lost in the movie heâd been watching since he was a kid. They ended up sharing his popcorn and the rest of the Swedish Fish, with Ryder stealing a few drinks from her Coke. And when his favorite songs came on, he was even able to smile. He doubted that wouldâve happened without Marley there. The empty theater probably wouldâve been creepy if heâd been alone, but they had each other.Â
Ryder was actually able to relax into his seat, heartbeat slow and steady as he sat there with Marley. He wished that they could just jump into the film like the kids jumped into the chalk painting, escape for a little bit into a cartoon. But the movie was the closest they were going to get. And by the time the credits began to roll and the lights came back up, Ryder was impressed he had sat through the entire movie for once without his mind wandering off. He gathered up their trash to fit into the empty popcorn bucket. âDâyou think she comes back to visit the kids?â he asked.Â
Standing up, he turned to follow her out of the theater. âIt just kind of sucks the way it ends with her disappearing. I know she fixed the Dad, but if I were those kids, I wouldnât want her to go. And what about Bert?â he pointed out. âHim and Mary totally flirt through the movie.â
By the end of the movie, most of Marleyâs frazzled nerves had been soothed, well enough that she was almost forgetting that she had reason to be so nervous in the first place. Mary Poppins certainly was magical that way. âTo visit the kids?â she asked, brow knitting in thought as they made their way down the aisle and towards the stairs. âYou know, thereâs interesting theories on the internet about this stuff, but personally, I like to think that Mary would appear to the kids if there ever came a time that they really needed her. Or that... that she would sort of always be there, if that makes sense? Like, the spirit of her.â
Okay, maybe that was more creepy than comforting.
âI bet maybe she and Bert met up later and ended up together though,â she speculated. âThough I never really started thinking about that until after Iâd watched the movie too many times to count. I mean, she thought he looked fine. How are we supposed to take this comment?â She chuckled, waiting for him to toss their trash out once they exited their theatre. âA little part of me wishes there was a sequel but that would just take away the wonder and mystery of speculating where everyone ended up afterward.â
Ryder wondered if he should apologize, but she had to know how he felt. He had never been good at hiding it, not since the first time heâd spoken to her and not since then either. There was something in him that knew Marley was always going to be the one that got away, the one right out of armâs reach. He just didnât have a clue when heâd actually accept that fact. Yesterday had thrown him for a loop, ripping open that part of his heart that heâd tried so hard to quiet down again.Â
His eyes fell to their hands, inhaling at the squeeze of a touch. It was just a friendly gesture, but he was glad how graceful she was being about it. âIâm glad I was with you too,â he nodded, looking up to the screen. âIt was the least I could do,â he shrugged away. As the first cannonball was shot, he reached his hand over to hold hers again. Shit, heâd forgotten about that part. Ryder swallowed and let go once more taking back his hand. âSorry,â he mumbled, digging the hand into his popcorn for a fistful. âForgot about the crazy sea captain.â
Marley knew it was more than âthe leastâ he could do, but she knew well enough to leave the subject alone after that. There were things you addressed and there were things you didnât. The fact that he was willing to risk his well-being for her fell into the latter. Her mind was turned away from those thoughts with the booming sound of a cannonball though, causing her to nearly spill her drink on the floor between her own jumping and his hand grabbing hers. âItâs okay,â she assured him, hoping her voice didnât shake as she curled up in her seat. âIt scared me too...â
The rest of the movie seemed to pass on with mostly silence between the two of them. Marley didnât mind though. For her, at least, it was a comfortable silence. Or rather, a comforting silence. She wasnât alone. She was with someone who understood her fear and her nerves, and there wasnât pressure to talk about things they didnât want to. She could just sit and nibble on the occasional piece of popcorn while Mary Poppins took them to a place far away from their suddenly more complex lives in Lima. And while it didnât solve a thing, it was at least something she could do.
âThatâs not possible,â he pointed out, glad to have something that was actually lifting his mood. Marley was good at that sort of thing. And Ryder was sure that her songs were good too, she just needed a confidence boost. âI think you should give them a chance. Show them to someone you really trust to be honest with you,â he said before tossing the last Swedish Fish into his mouth.Â
He coughed and then cleared his throat of candy at her question, eyes focused right on the screen as Bert came out to begin the movie. After just saying that he didnât want to live a dishonest life, he knew that he couldnât lie to Marley. But he also knew that he couldnât tell her the whole truth. Sheâd chosen Jake, twice.Â
Ryder licked his lips and said, âI was thinking about the people that I love, what I havenât said to them. Iâd want my dad to know how much heâs taught me. My mom to know how hard Iâve tried to make her proud.â He sniffed his nose quietly. If he had died, did he really want Marley not to know? Even if it was complicated? Even if it was awkward? âAndâŚâ
Marley knew that with such a serious topic on hand, she might end up hearing something she didnât want to. Or something that was awkward, or just plain hard to hear. But in the spirit of honesty, like heâd already said, it felt like the question should be treated just that way - with frankness and honesty. It didnât stop the way her insides seemed to squeeze themselves tightly with his answer. With a past like theirs... well, it was all too easy for a situation to become awkward real fast.
Ryder had never really been much of one to hold back though. From that first kiss theyâd shared backstage the opening night of Grease to his vulnerable admission that heâd been the one behind all of the Valentineâs Day events Jake had claimed to orchestrate himself, it had been obvious, sometimes painfully so, that Ryder carried a torch for her, regardless of what her relationship status happened to be at the time. And while she could not in all honesty say that she never considered the possibility, she was with Jake. She was committed to him and had an obligation to keep the line between friends and something more very firm with Ryder. If not for herself, then for Jake.
She stole a look over at him before ducking her head, unsure of the right response to give him. How do you let someone know that you appreciate them without giving them the wrong idea? There was too much gray area there, it seemed. âWell you know what I think of you and how important you are to me,â she murmured, âand while I was scared to death in that kitchen, Iâm glad I wasnât alone. Iâm glad you were there with me.â She decided not to overthink her next action too much and just reached over to grab his hand, giving it a squeeze before she took hers back. âI donât know very many people who would risk getting shot at just to make sure I could find my mom.â
When Marley started talking about the secrets kept hidden and missed opportunities, Ryder knew exactly what his mind went to: the day heâd cancelled on their date to study. It seemed like he could look back to that moment and knew things would be different right now if he hadnât cancelled. Marley wouldnât have gone out with Jake instead. And then what if Ryder had said that he wasnât okay with Jake dating Marley? What if he had stood up for himself? It was months ago now, but he thought about it sometimes.
âShe apologized? Woah,â he said, kind of amazed. Going through something like this actually did change people. His focus and eyes were drawn back to her as she spoke, looking at her outline in the dim lighting of the theater. Ryder swallowed when the thought of her dying hit him, but it was washed away by the shock of her admission. âYou write music?â he asked, adjusting the popcorn and candy in his lap to face her a bit better. âMarley, thatâs amazing.â He tilted his head as he noted her nerves. âI bet theyâre great,â he encouraged. With her musical talent, he didnât doubt she was just as great a song writer. âYouâre always talking about Joni Mitchell and Carole King⌠I shouldnât be surprised you write too,â he smiled slightly, nudging her elbow. âBut why are they secret?â
Marley was suddenly thankful for the fact that it was dark in the theatre and it was much more likely that he couldnât see the way her cheeks flushed with his immediate response. Now she remember one of the reasons why she didnât tell people about her secret passion - the assumption that her songs were actually any good. âI donât know,â she shrugged, her smile halfway between genuine and maybe a little uncomfortable. Not in the worst way but still. Talking about her music felt like talking about her diary. Well, if she actually had one.Â
âTheyâre just... theyâre my songs. And what if theyâre not even halfway decent?â she pointed out. âIt would seem silly to bring them up when I donât even know if theyâre good enough to share.â Having the attention back on her made her feel weird, so instead, she turned the topic back to him again. âWhat about you? What were you thinking about while we were stuck in that kitchen?â She felt bad for Mary Poppins but she was too distracted now, finally having the chance to vent some of her thoughts on what had happened to them.
Ryder looked between her eyes as she paused to think through her answer. But he read it pretty clearly in her expression and her body language. While yesterday, heâd been able to stand in front of her and act as a shield, he couldnât exactly do that for her mind. âIâm sorry,â he mumbled, knowing it wasnât his fault, but not knowing what else to say. âKitty texted you? Thatâs a change right there,â he mused, looking forward as the lights started to dim in the theater for movie previews.Â
âI.. I tried to talk to Katie, convince her to meet me after school like she promised. But after what happened - she changed her mind,â he said, eating another fish. Ryder almost asked Marley to tell whoever was Katie to leave him alone rather than toy with him like this, but he knew it wasnât her fault or her responsibility. âYou know⌠itâs okay that weâre all freaked out,â he said, for both of them, âYesterday was the most stressful day of my life. All I could think about was getting you back safe to your mom. And telling my parents that I loved them.âÂ
He put his feet back up on the chair in front of him, hoping Marley didnât mind it. âQuestion is what changes now,â he said. âI feel - different than I did before it, you know? Like I donât want to live a life that isnât honest, or that doesnât make me happy. I donât want secrets or drama or bullshit-â He sighed and sent her a brief look before focusing on the screen. âSorry, you probably came here for quiet and you ended up with me.â
The lights dimmed but Marleyâs attention was drawn away from the opening advertisement playing before the start of their movie. She hadnât been able to touch base with Unique yet about the âcatfishâ situation but judging from what Ryder recounted, âKatieâ had flaked on showing up again. She couldnât help it - her heart hurt for him. Hurt because he was such a nice guy and deserved a nice girl, because he deserved honesty and wasnât get it, hurt because she knew what was going on and wasnât in a place to reveal that truth. Which in turn sent guilt roiling in her stomach, making it hard to swallow her Swedish fish.
âRyder, you donât have to apologize for a single thing,â she answered quietly. âSomething scary happened to us. I mean, what else can you do when something like that happens? Itâs hard not to think about all the things you never said or did but meant to. All the people you shouldâve been nicer to, all the opportunities you shouldâve taken but didnât. All the secrets you kept hidden because you were scared or whatever...â She trailed off when she realized she was the one rambling now. She fiddled with the straw on her cup for a moment before she spoke up again.
âKitty texted me because she wanted to to apologize for being so mean to during the musical, and sectionals. She said that was one of the things she couldnât stop thinking about when she was stuck in the choir room,â she explained. âAnd it got me thinking about all of the thoughts that went through my head while we were stuck in that kitchen. My mom, my friends, all the things Iâd never done or said but meant to... and I realized that Iâd never really started living at all. Not until I moved here, anyway.â She sighed, fidgeting in her seat again. âYou know,â she hedged again, feeling ten times more nervous, âone of the things I thought about was how if I died that day... no one wouldâve ever known that I wrote my own songs.â
That made more sense. Millie was the type to call out for Marley. While Ryderâs mom probably wouldnât even listen to the voicemail the school would make about her absent son. But at least he wasnât alone anymore. He kicked the popcorn away from his seat while she walked the steps up to him. If they were lucky, theyâd be the only ones in the theater for the whole movie. Ryder found himself hoping for as much.Â
He pursed his lips against a smile at how easily she took the candy from him. It was incredible to think of how far sheâd come from the girl heâd found crying in the bathroom opening night of Grease. Balancing the popcorn on his lap, he shook out a few for himself. âOh,â he said, taking a bite to give himself a reason not to answer just yet. He didnât think sheâd notice. âYou looked like you were in good hands,â he mused. He cleared his throat as the candy got stuck thanks to his dry throat.Â
Ryderâs eyes were focused on the blank screen in front of them as he answered her. âThat questions so weird, isnât it? After something like that,â he murmured. âI donât really know what I am right now. I barely slept last night. I freaked out in my car this morning. And I ditched school for a Disney movie.â Ryder paused and looked over at her, âSorry. This isnât really stuff Iâm supposed to answer with. Iâm okay,â he said unconvincingly to his own ears. âHow are you?â
It was sad to know that Ryder responding in such a way as that typically meant something more along the lines of âyou didnât need me anymoreâ. He may not have said anything of the sort out loud but Marley sensed it. It was the sort of attitude that hung there in the air, present but never addressed. And Marley couldnât help but hope that she was doing her best to assure him that he was needed around. That he wasnât just there for convenience or however he thought of it.
âIâm...â Well, she didnât know. Much like heâd recounted, she had slept fitfully all night, if at all, and had found herself both without an appetite and without much of a desire to be left alone. Or face her peers. â... probably as well off as you.â She shrugged again, hiding momentarily behind her Coke. âI guess if weâre going by whatâs socially acceptable then Iâm âokayâ. But if weâre being honest, Iâm kinda freaked out.â She pursed her lips and looked forward again. It wasnât as though talking to Ryder about vulnerable stuff was difficult. It was just... a difficult topic. âI think everyone is freaking out though. I mean, Kitty texted me today and we barely talk outside of school as it is.â
