Lost Horse Press

Established in 1998, Lost Horse Press—a nonprofit independent press—publishes poetry titles of high literary merit, and makes available other fine contemporary literature through cultural, educational and publishing programs and activities. The Lost Horse New Poets, Short Books Series, edited by Marvin Bell, is dedicated to works—often ignored by conglomerate publishers—which are so much in danger of vanishing into obscurity in what has become the age of chain stores and mass appeal food, movies, art and books.

Idaho Prize Winner Announced

We are excited to announce that the winner of the Idaho Prize for Poetry 2014 is Jeff Baker of Charlottesville, VA with his manuscript WHOOP AND SHUSH. Runner up is Paul Martin of Allentown, PA with his manuscript entitled RIVER SCAR. Congratulations to Jeff Baker, Paul Martin, all the finalists. Using Lygia Clark’s book Meu doce rio (My Sweet River) as a source of inspiration, artist Carlito Carvalhosa orchestrated a public action on May 20, 2014 in which participants read Clark’s work, in both Portuguese and English, printed on a long strip of fabric in the MoMA the Sculpture Garden.

LOST HORSE PRESS and the SANDPOINT LIBRARY are pleased to present An Evening with ROBERT MICHAEL PYLE, who will be introducing his new collection of poems released recently by Lost Horse Press, Evolution of the Genus IRIS. The reading and book signing will take place on Thursday, 5 June 2014 at 7 pm in the Rude Girls Room of the Sandpoint Library. Admission is free and all are welcome to attend.   Robert Michael Pyle writes essay, poetry, and fiction from an old Swedish farmstead along a tributary of the Lower Columbia River in southwestern Washington. His eighteen books include Wintergreen and The Tangled Bank. A Guggenheim Fellow, he has received the John Burroughs Medal and several other writing awards. Pyle’s poems have appeared in magazines including the North American Review, and in a chapbook, Letting the Flies Out. Evolution of the Genus IRIS is his first full-length book of poems.   Robert Michael Pyle’s poems respond to details, events, and emanations from the real, physical world and its species: humans and all the rest. The poems are based on or drawn from personal experiences and perceptions, mostly out-of-doors, and will appeal to the intelligent general reader, lovers of land and literature, fans of a good poem and a good story, and naturalists—which means anyone interested in the world and its occupants beyond themselves and their immediate self-concern.

ENDLESS ELECTRICITY: Here’s A Way Of Turning America’s Roads Into Gigantic Solar Panels

There are about 31,251 square miles of roads, parking lots, driveways, playgrounds, bike paths, and sidewalks in the lower 48 states. If Julie and Scott Brusaw have their way, they will all someday be replaced with solar panels.

For the better part of a decade, the Idaho couple has been working on prototyping an industrial-strength panel that could withstand the weight of even the largest trucks. They now appear to have cracked the formula, developing a specially textured glass coating for the panels that can not only bear tremendous loads but also support standard tire traction.

By their reckoning, at peak installation their panelized roads could produce more than three times the electricity consumed in the U.S.

The material could power electric vehicles through a receiver plate mounted beneath the vehicle and a transmitter plate is installed in the road.

PEOPLE THINK ABOUT IT, JUST HOW MANY ROADS THERE ARE ALL OVER THE WORLD AND HOW MUCH ENERGY COULD BE PRODUCED USING THESE LIKE SERIOUSLY “THREE TIMES THE ELECTRICITY CONSUMED IN THE U.S”. IT’S NOT JUST GOING TO HELP REDUCE THE AMOUNTS OF GREEN HOUSE EMISSIONS, IT’S GOING TO CREATE JOBS IN THE COUNTRIES IT’S USED IN. IT HAS SO MUCH EXTRA STUFF IT’S UNBELIEVABLE HOW AMAZING THE ROAD COULD BE. 

THESE PEOPLE ARE SAINTS, THEY’VE WORKED THEIR BUTTS OFF AND VOLUNTEERS HAVE WORKED JUST AS HARD TO GET TO THIS LEVEL BUT THEY STILL HAVE JUST UNDER $ 800,000 TO RAISE IN 15 DAYS. 

THIS SORTA STUFF IS HOW WE’RE GOING TO CREATE A GREENER EARTH AND IT’S BEEN VIRTUALLY IGNORED BY TUMBLR. WE NEED TO SUPPORT THIS STUFF AND THESE SORTS OF PEOPLE WHO SELFLESSLY DEDICATE THEIR WORK TO CREATING A BETTER WORLD.
