Jeston sighs, not in anger, but wearily. 

“And if someone is truly being an idiot? Does this mean I shouldn’t say anything?” It’s a trap, of course. He gives his opinions freely and frequently, no matter how cutting.

"It generally helps to explain why you believe that." He turned at last, meeting Jeston's eyes without hesitation, folding his arms across his middle as he leaned his back against the workbench.

Alaris didn’t look up from his work, but the pestle paused in the mortar for a moment. “We’re all an idiot at some point in someone’s eyes,” he said calmly, continuing to crush herbs as before. “It’s just a difference of perspective, really.”

Leather armor pulls tautly across Jeston’s back as he crosses his arms. “Is that so? Then how is it idiocy breeds mistakes which affect us all?”

He pauses, rolling his shoulders. “I won’t have this debate with you, Alaris.”

Alaris looked away guiltily.  It hurt as much to leave, but he wasn’t about to say that now.  There was little point in poking at old hurts when the scars were long closed.  Like any old wound, however, he could never be the same. He blinked as her hand appeared in his line of sight, looking up quickly to meet her gaze.  He took her hand without hesitation, returning her smile with a bright one of his own. “I would like that,” he admitted, his throat strangely tight.  You don’t have to be, not anymore.  ”We have a lot of catching up to do, no doubt!  Who were your… companions, are they?  Friends, yes?”  A strange group if ever he saw one, but friends of Khaliya would no doubt be friends of his.

“Friends–yes. But that is not all they are.” Mouth pursed, Khaliya ducked her gaze down. She had to start somewhere, to explain it all. So her hand left his. But instead of it returning to her side, she turned it; palm upwards and scar visible, holding it before him. The Anchor: all agleam in its sickly green light. “Not too long ago, the Keeper sent me away to spy at the Conclave. I’m sure even you heard of the conflict between the mages and templars–it was to be a peace summit.”

Her hand closed in a fist. 

“A nice little ‘souvenir’ after what had happened there.” The joke soured her tongue.“My 'friends’ are more than that, as I’ve said. They’re the Inquisition. Like myself.”

Khaliya kept her gaze on Alaris, searching for a reaction. The Inquisition, naturally, made the Dalish wary given their origins. How Alaris would react to the news remained to be seen.

"To... spy?" Alaris blinked, confused. "Don't misunderstand - I see the merit. No doubt this war has affected the People what with Tenplars hunting whatever they like. But why you? Surely a hunter would have blended in somehow..."

He had crossed paths with this "Inquisition" once or twice, traded for supplies and gone on his way. He wasn't concerned she was with the Inquisition - he was concerned for her.

Alaris frowned at her fist, stepping a bit closer to her. "May I?" he asked, gesturing to her hand.

"Are you perhaps one of the Inquisitor’s clan? We were not expecting a representative."

"Ah." Alaris rubbed the back of his head sheepishly.  "Not as such.  I was once.  It's... complicated.  Suffice to say, I'm not a representative - but I do want to help."

"It wasn’t truly forgetting." The pause that followed was long. Her brows dip down, jaw clenched, and she looked away. "It was easier not to speak. Not to think, to remember. It hurt, when you left. Hurt us all."

But the clan endured and survived, as they must all do. The grief of old memories and now was like a freshly opened wound, but Khaliya was joyful to know that all these years did Alaris live and survive. She smiled then at him, dimples showing and eyes crinkling at the corners. A hand reached out, wanting to take and hold his like she did when she was young. She missed their friendship dearly.

"You say that as if we’ll part ways after this." Khaliya spoke suddenly, with finality. The smile vanished then, mouth now pressed into a flat line. "Are you alone? You don’t have to be, not anymore. You could join me, you know… I could use a friend."

She hadn’t told him of what happened. How she left at the Keeper’s command to spy. How she was marked. Given the powers of an artifact of the People that a darkspawn magister of all things possessed. He didn’t know about what happened to the clan, either. Creators, there was a lifetime of things they did not know of one another. Old, dear friends—yet they knew so little. At the least, she can try to reestablish it. So she started, with hesitant words and a name she used for very few in her life now.

"But there is so much that you don’t know, lethallin.”

The water rushes past, a constant tinkling akin to music. Ainsley focuses on stepping from stone to stone, feet braced so that the silt and water-smoothed terrain doesn’t wrench her ankles from beneath her.

With a heave from the base of her staff, she arcs the distance to the river bank and lands where flaking earth meets damp mud. It is familiar beneath her feet.

Though she glances to her companion, her thoughts stray to the encampment of Dalish nearby — not their clan and rightfully wary of them for it, but they had been welcoming in their way, a heartening sight among so much destruction. For where they’re journeying, however, that relief would be short-lived.

"It shouldn’t be much farther."

The ancient burial place is but one of many things tarnished over the years. Intruders in the area don’t need to contribute to that.

Alaris hangs back a little, giving Ainsley time and space to ford the river before following, hopping lightly from stone to stone and then to the bank, his long legs making it easier to cross.  He slips a little as he hit the bank, digging the blade of his staff into the earth for some extra purchase.

He shakes the mud off the blade, tutting at himself before slinging his staff across his back again.  "I'm surprised there's as much left from when our people walked these plains," he admits.  "I thought the shemlen would have either looted or flattened all of it where they could."

"You thought what? That we’d forget?" The clan had been stricken for a time. But then rationalization set in, and for all Khaliya knew, they really did seem to forget about him. At first, they simply danced around the mention of him. And then, not even that happened anymore. His face and words and voice hung heavy in her mind, guilt shaped and ever-present. The notes and books of his she read constantly, and the letter she carried on her person until the writing was gone and the paper faded and yellowed. 

"I know. You meant well, and it had to be done. But—" But nothing. Reasoning or argument was useless now, wasn’t it? He had made his choice, and both she and the clan had carried on. "But I suppose it doesn’t matter now, does it?

"I did. And all your books, your notes… They were helpful—to me, to the others. I suppose now I should say thank you." A sharp wind cut through the trees, and Khaliya lost herself to the noise of it. She took the time then, to study him. The scar that lined his face, the age that had shaped and carved his face in time. "Why are you here? Did you never find a new clan, a new home—anything?”

"No! Well, at least... I hadn't thought anyone would forget until now." Truly, it hadn't crossed his mind that he would fade from memory of those he'd loved and tried to protect. In hindsight, it was naive not to have considered it. "It doesn't matter now.  What was done is done.  I am sorry.  I didn't want to leave like that, but... I wouldn't have been able to otherwise." He smiled softly, glad that his notes, rambling as they might have been, were at least a little helpful.  "You are welcome, lethallan.  I have others from my travels that... well I don't know if they're useful, but I have kept a record of what I can." Alaris hesitated at the question: new clan, new home?  "I've travelled with many clans, where I could," he said.  "Most had Firsts and Seconds, and then later when I found those that had space... I suppose I was in that habit of roaming." His face split into a smile, eyes bright with enthusiasm and knowledge.  "But the places I've seen, lethallan - I wish I could show you.  Sketches do not do them justice, but I have them all marked on my maps if you ever travel that way."

Dorian invades the elf’s space, placing a hand on the male’s shoulder. Leaning in slowly, his lips brush against the tip of Alaris’  own. Gently brushing up against the other male’s before pulling back. A quirk of a smile on his face. “That wasn’t so bad— was it?”

"You seem to be getting a bit red." Dorian chuckles, a grin on his lips. "Maybe I can help you get rid of that." He jokes under his breath. "Oh? And if you enjoyed it so much— I am sure I can come up with more to do."

Alaris had to laugh, his blush not dissipating in the slightest.  He chances a look up, confident he can't possibly blush anymore by now, grinning cheekily. "Help get rid of it, he says, then makes it worse.  Tease."

He almost follows Dorian as the Teviner pulled away, and he feels the blush start across his cheeks and then creep up to the tips of his ears.  It takes him a moment to find his words, clearing his throat bashfully before speaking.  "Quite the opposite, actually."
