Even miracles take a little time.
Fairy Godmother; Cinderella, Disney
Barrel hadn’t thought the other would notice. He had a few peppermints left in his pocket, but he was absolutely craving chocolate, and not the bittersweet kind they baked with in class. So, when he saw a new person carrying around a little mug of candy, he thought he had hit the jackpot. He would pay the other back later, of course, even if they would never know it. Of course, their words surprised him, especially with a mouth already stuffed full of the sweet. Chewing a few times and swallowing deep, he managed a sheepish smile. “Oh, uh… sorry. I didn’t think you’d notice. I can get you some more. Here, uh… You like mint?” He held out the candy from his pocket, smiling down at the other.
A soft, warm chuckle of laughter slipped from Ella’s lips as she was glad to see that her sweets were at least placing a smile and brightening up someone else’s day. At the same time, her candy gave her the opportunity to meet a new face, something so rare for her back at home. Smiling warmly at the stranger, the blonde shook her head at the offer of peppermints for repayment. “Oh, no, no please, continue to keep those. It’s perfectly fine really.” Realizing that saying no might have sounded offensive she quickly spoke again to rectify her sentence. “I mean I do like mint, it’s very refreshing, but I’ve had enough chocolate today to last me a while. If you would like some more go right ahead and grab some! I managed to get far more then expected. I’m Ella by the way.”
“Awww, yeah. That’s some good stuff right there.”
Ella had been walking through the hallway after finishing her last class of the day. In her hand rested her cellphone that currently vibrated ruthlessly from countless text messages of chores her step-sisters were ordering the blonde to do. Much to her dismay she was about to reply to the messages when the sight of male blonde student caught her attention, making her pause in her steps.
“Oh no, a horrible itch, huh? Those can be the worse sometimes.”
Flynn stopped in his ministrations to look left and right, then back at Ella. It was weird that someone cared about his well-being. He decided to appreciate it, but he didn’t necessarily believe that she meant it. Those ‘consequences’ from the only time he got caught though weren’t something he wanted to share with her, or with anyone. Chances were someone was going to pick up on it anyway and just spread the message. He was going to steal that gossip queen’s mic and see to it that it would disappear forever, he thought grinding his teeth. “Of course, why should we not be allowed? I go there all the time.” He said and laughed with relief. “The stuff on Campus is okay, I guess. Come on I’ll walk you there.” He stood up, just waiting for her to follow.
There was no denying that Ella picked up Flynn’s rather odd reaction when she had mentioned how glad she was to hear that he couldn’t get caught. She truly hoped that she hadn’t offended him as she had sincerely meant what she said, but deciding to leave things as was, the blonde simply shrugged her shoulders, pretending to have no noticed anything. “I have no idea if the customs and rules here are different from those in France, so I figured I ask before assuming anything. It’s safer to ask then to look completely clueless.” She laughed softly before continuing on. “Perfect! Because if I took lead we would end up hopelessly lost.” With that, the blonde eagerly got up from her seat, grabbing her bag and jar of candy as she did so to follow Flynn’s lead.
“One room fits atleast thirty people,” Sally replied thinking to how large the room was. Plenty of space for people to move around and do what they had to. Not to mention the amount of ingredients they had stored in them was eye-opening, and that wasn’t counting the storage rooms at the end of the hallway. Lifting her hands, she held them out at her sides, emphasizing the size. “Very large but very comfortable. You don’t feel crowded or anything in there.” Her face scrunched up slightly at the mention of her father-truly a tragedy- but she shrugged all the same. “He’s not quite ready to let me go.” The words held more weight to them than the other girl realized, but it wasn’t a secret Sally was going to let go of any time soon. After all, it was quite difficult to talk about in the first place. “Oh I know,” Sally gasped, “The campus is rather large. I got lost during my first week here. Luckily I got a map.” She patted her pocket with a nod.
Ella couldn’t help the fact that her eyes opened a little wider upon hearing how big the kitchens were in the campus. Of course, she was use to always being in one, but the one in her house back in France was nowhere near as big as the kitchens that were described, even if she didn’t live in a small home. “Oh, wow. I wasn’t imagining at all for the kitchen to be quite so big. My kitchen back at home is definitely smaller then the ones here.” Perhaps that was a good thing though, having a cozy kitchen meant she could move around it fairly quickly, which was needed when the bells were ringing like crazy demanding Ella’s presence so that new orders could be given to her. The blonde could immediately see that the topic of Sally’s father was not one the ginger liked to speak much about, which was perfectly fine with Ella since she understood a lot more then her new companion would know. Her step-family was always a touchy topic for Ella as well. Deciding to let it go all together, she spoke once more. “I know I’m going to get miserably lost and I’m already horrible at keeping track of time too.” She laughed softly. “There are maps? A map would be perfect! Do you know where I may be able to grab a copy? I have a feeling the map and I are going to be great friends.”
At this odd question he watched her thoughtfully. Well, could he? Of course he could, if he did it on purpose. Sometimes it was for the better too. “This is a part of the package, Ella.” He said and shrugged. “No evidence whatsoever. If I want to go unseen, I will remain unseen. Think of it the way you use your mutation. Just comes to me naturally.” It was difficult to explain, but it was not so much with other mutants he supposed. He’d actually discussed this with ‘normal’ people before, simply for bragging purposes. “You’re very welcome.” He removed another chocolate bar from the jar and placed it in front of himself on the table. “I’ll gladly take the credit. So what do you say we just get us mugs of hot chocolate right now? You got me real curious there.”
Ella was glad to hear that he could leave no evidence behind that will incriminate him. She was aware that she only knew Flynn for the short amount of time they have been speaking, but she still wouldn’t like for the guy to end up getting caught. “Good because I honestly wouldn’t like to hear that you have gotten caught and got stuck with the consequences.” The blonde took a moment to picture what was spoken of her and she could see now how he could go without a shred of evidence left behind. To manipulate ash was one of the easiest things to do for Ella and she can practically do it blindly so it had to be the same for Flynn. “I’ll relent this time then and allow you to win the credit.” She replied jokingly before she happily nodded her head in agreement to Flynn’s suggestion. “I say that sounds perfect to me. Do you know if we are allowed to go into the kitchens here? I’m sure the campus makes nice hot chocolates, but you should really taste the ones I make. You won’t regret it.”
The ‘sweet’ pet names had only meant to serve playful jab at her offer, but the more she spoke the more he realised they fit far too well. She really was overly sweet. Not that it was necessarily a bad thing. Kindness simply went well with naivety. That wouldn’t be much of a surprise considering she seemed perfectly fine with strangers stealing her chocolate.
Flicking his wrist, he tossed the two pieces of wrapped chocolate in the air, catching them in his palm as he slid himself into the seat opposed to her. “Pretty name to match a pretty face,” he offered with a wink, placing the chocolates on the table in front of him. “Of course not, but I have to warn you, it’s not as nice as yours. Name’s Ron. You new around here, Ella?“
Ella was impressed to see the stranger so easily catch the two pieces of chocolate that he tossed in the air and as he took the empty seat that was in front of her, she was glad to see that it looked like she’ll be kept with some company. The blonde simply smiled and laughed softly at the compliment given to her. Whether it was meant or not, compliments were a rare sort for her ears. She had gotten so use to years upon years of emotional abuse and insults from her family that anything away from such categories was refreshing.
“Thank you. Ron isn’t a bad name, and besides, at least you can jot your name down very quickly. In any case, it’s nice to meet you, Ron.” Nodding her head in response to his question, Ella was surprised to see that he was able to pick up on that notion rather quickly. “I am. It’s actually my first time in America as well. How did you know?”
Getting free chocolate has to be one of the best things to happen to him today. “Thanks again.” Stitch said with a mouth full of chocolate. The sweet taste that came from the bar was heavenly for him. “No, I think I’m going to start carrying my own jar of chocolates. A jar of chocolate or Swedish Fish.” Stitch took up her offer on getting more by even stuffing some in his pockets. “Stitch. Name’s Stitch. Nice to meet you.” He smiled back at Ella.
Ella was more than thrilled to see the young stranger very happy with the chocolate she had to offer as a bright smile lit her lips. “You’re very welcome. A jar of chocolate makes all the difference in the world sometimes, especially if you’re having a rather off day.” Laughing at the other choice of candy, the blonde nodded her head. “Swedish fish is definitely a good choice, but then again I think any choice of candy would be perfect as long as they’re sweet.” Smiling once more she continued on. “It’s nice to meet you too, Stitch. I like the name, I can’t say I have heard it before. It’s rather unique.”

Rachel chuckled. “I’m glad you think so” she told her. She smiled. “Thank you, that’s really nice of you! Too bad there isn’t anyone with weather manipulation around to give it some more time, right?” she said, lightly joking.
Taking one last look at her work, Rachel reached toward the middle to add a little bit of shading to the golden flower in the middle of the piece. Satisfied, she wiped her hands on a blue cloth sat beside her and stood up. “Oh, yes! I’m not a master at it, I need a lot more practice, but I do!” she said with a grin. “In fact, I used to make my brother be my model so I could make sure I got my hems correct and measurements accurate” she admitted. “But don’t tell him I told you that” she added with a wink. Rachel smiled softly. How nice that sounded. To have shared something with her mother. Rachel shared nothing with her mother, except when she came in to brush her hair before bed. When she was younger she used to look forward to it all day, but as she grew older, she started to think, her mother was more interested in her hair, than her. Perhaps her mother was proud that her daughter had such remarkable hair, though? Long, thick and luscious. “That’s so lovely” she said gently. “And fashion design? Wow! That’s very cool. What do you design the most? Is there a particular thread of fashion you love?” Rachel asked. The blonde laughed, realising they were having a full conversation without knowledge of one another’s name. “It’s wonderful to meet you, Ella. I’m Rachel, but feel free to call me El, if you’d like”
“You’re very welcome! I’m not so sure how much it would help out, but one never knows right?” Laughing softly, more so to herself then anything, Ella continued on. “Maybe we might just get lucky and someone with that ability will pop up. It can be a good possibility. If there is any place to find a certain mutation, I’m guessing here on campus is the best shot. It can’t hurt to hope. Hoping and wishing are free.” Hoping was actually what got Ella through most of her days with a positive light back at home. Ella found herself smiling and pleasantly enjoying hearing the blonde speak about how she would practice with her brother. She can tell that the siblings shared a special bond, probably the same type of bond Ella had excitingly hoped and wished for when she found out she was about to have step-sisters.
“I’m sure what you created ended up coming out lovely every time.” Laughing now, Ella jokingly placed one of her hands on her chest before she spoke. “I promise, your secret is safe with me. Although, I have to say your brother must be a very nice to person to be okay with being used as a model. I ended up gaining the most of my practice, however, from my step-sisters.” Ella admitted but she knew her voice didn’t portray the same joyfulness as the stranger even for as much as she tried. Her practice was gained because she was constantly ordered to mend, or to add a specific appliqué to their clothing, along with completing every house hold chore, plus cook the meals and attend to the outside land. As it was, Ella was grateful that the chore lead to her honing her skills that much more. “I find that I enjoy women’s apparel more, especially evening wear. I love designing and creating dresses. Any kind of formal dress and gown. I can spend an entire day simply sketching and sewing up a design and be blissfuly content.” Upon hearing the name of the blonde Ella smiled, as she took a seat on the cement ground. “Rachel, that’s a nice name.”
“I see.” That didn’t sound threatening or like something she could use against him at least. Rather it sounded homey and inviting even. Just like she was born to be a cleaner. That thought didn’t sit well with him. “Enhanced Thieving. You can probably fill in the rest.” He replied amusedly to keep the mood going. “I am one with the shadows and the night. Nobody can see me coming or will know that I was there.” He added full of pride. “Not that it was a big deal or anything.” Flynn gestured encouragingly at her hesitant explanation. “A girl like you will find friends in no time. You already found me for instance! Or perhaps I found you.. we’ll never know.”
Flynn had to be one of the first people she had personally told about her mutation, except for her step-family who already knew of it, and he gave a far better reaction. Her step-family simply brought down her ability and called it dirty, creating the name they all now call her to crash her spirits further, ‘Cinderella.’ “I know there is far more I can do with it then what I’m able to now, but I’m still learning.” Ella smiled upon hearing the guy’s ability thinking that it suited him perfectly for the likings of going where ever he pleased. “Can you leave any evidence behind?” She hoped that he couldn’t. Although she wouldn’t have the heart to steal anything, she liked how nice Flynn has been with her and sincerely hoped that he would never end up getting caught and having to pay the troubles for it. “Thank you.” The blonde said genuinely. “I guess I did! Or you did.. one way or the other.” She laughed softly continuing on. “At least I received a pleasant positive start with you. I could’ve started out worse.”
The way Ella expressed that theory actually made him think of somebody, but he vehemently refused to even think about that. “No, no. I haven’t and I’m certainly not going to try. That is not my department.” Flynn tapped his forehead as she digged further into that direction. “I mind.” He said and nodded briefly, but smiled lightly. “How about we talk about something more relevant? You’re here because you’re a mutant, just like me.” At that he put his hand down on his own chest for good measure. “What’s your talent?” He inquired to try and change the topic. Once he mentioned what he could do, most conversations took either utterly expected, or highly unexpected turns. “You sound almost as if you had no friends to share with on Campus. That can’t be the case.” He chuckled lightly, then he frowned. “Or is it? Well, horseback riding is already pretty fancy. Sounds good to me.”
Ella didn’t feel upset or taken aback upon hearing that Flynn minded. It was why she asked if it was ok to pry. Everyone had there own personal matters, she understand that far more than others, and she was never one to push if someone wanted to keep their personal matters to themselves. Instead, she allowed for the conversation to take a turn towards a different direction without thought of returning to the previous topic. “It would seem so.” She replied jokingly to Flynn’s observation of her being a mutant. “Ash manipulation. I can generate and manipulate the by product of fire to my likings. It tends to come in handy.” More so during the winter nights when the attic was far too cold for her to sleep in. Upon being questioned whether Ella had friends on campus, the blonde found herself looking down at the table. “I might not... still a little new.” Ella softly admitted before continuing on. “My parents taught me the trade. It’s something nice to do when you need to get away from things for a while.”

Rachel continued to draw as the other girl spoke, smiling gently at how kindly the other seemed. There was a gentleness to her voice which was comforting, and a confidence in her selection of words. “Oh, well, you’re not wrong there, but this isn’t my ability” she explained, sitting back on her heels and regarding her work. “This is a hobbie, or well…my passion. And my major” she added with a wide smile,
The blonde looked up to the other girl, nodding her head. “Of course! Nothing wrong with that question!” she told her with a light laugh. “Well, I spent a lot of my childhood - growing up - inside, because…of the area we lived. And drawing, painting, sculpting, sewing, all those things were the only things to do and keep me entertained. So, I guess the honest answer is years and years of practice”
Ella could definitely tell that the blonde in front of her had a passion for art. It was clearly visible in her painting and the amount of undivided attention she gave to it. It was nice to see someone so involved in what they love. It made her realize that she wasn’t the only one and wondered if she looked the same when she was designing or dancing. “I definitely think that you are in the correct major then.” Looking up at the sky then, the blonde bit her lip in noticing that it was rather gray before she looked down at the stranger before her. “I truly hope the rain will hold back. I’ll keep my fingers crossed, so that your painting will remain a little longer.”
There was a pleasant smile that immediately lit up on Ella’s features upon hearing that the girl spent a lot of her time at home. It wasn’t meant in a bad way, but it felt comforting to hear that she wasn’t the only one always at home. Her interest, however quickly peaked when she caught the girl mention sewing. “You sew? I do as well! It was a talent my mother taught me and we use to do all the time together. I ended up choosing Fashion Design as one of my majors because of it and because I also like designing dresses.” It was then when Ella realized that she hadn’t even introduced herself and she went about immediately rectifying that. “I’m Ella by the way. It’s nice to meet you.”
Before he replied this time he snatched the paper with her number on it away and stored it away savely. “I beg to differ. Finding and retrieving things is one of my specialities. With people, however.. I would have to experiment with that first.” He smirked as she continued to explain herself. As if she needed to when offering any foodstuffs to him. “You might.. it would be worth a try. I’m definitely looking forward to that.” It was a little silly that he mentioned one of a lot of stories he read over time and he decided to part ways with that approach as quickly as possible. “They’ll sure have it in the library.” He said and shrugged it off. “I think you’re great just the way you are. No matter if you’re wearing one or two shoes, although I would vote for none at all. That way you can’t lose them either.”
Ella laughed. “So you have never found, say a missing person yet, Flynn? I think you should go ahead with that experiment then and see if you could.” The blonde was curious to hear about the man’s specialty, especially since she herself a specialty in the complete opposite. Ella had a talent for losing things instead of finding anything. “How did you come about such a talent? If you don’t mind me asking.” Ella found herself happily nodding her head at the prospect of her new challenge. “Oh, I will definitely give it a good try. I need another hot chocolate fanatic on my side. I have only myself, so far.” A warm smile touched her lips at the compliment given. Compliments were certainly something new to the blonde, she had begun to get use to only hearing insults and berating when it came to herself. “Thank you. You know, I have thought about that, and I’m sure no shoes is going to be present in my future. I already take them off when I get on a horse.”
It had only meant to serve as a conversation opening. In all honesty, he wasn’t all that fussed on chocolate. Dark chocolate was fine, but milk chocolate tends to be too sweet for his tastes. However, that was hardly the point. It didn’t hurt to know members of the opposite sex, especially ones with such a pretty face. Taking a chocolate let his gauge their reaction: anger (a challenge), surprise (entertainment), or kindness (free food and potential). This one seemed to fall into the ‘kindness’ category.
“Well if you insist,” he took another, though only continued to twirl the two pieces through his fingers, leaning against her table. “Thanks, sweetheart. I owe you one. Got a name, sugar?”
Who would have thought that simply having a jar of chocolate out in the open would attract people to her table? Certainly Ella hadn’t imagine meeting new people simply because she had some sweets to offer, but it was turning out that way. Of course, the blonde truly didn’t mind. She was new here, and hardly knew anyone at all. Seeing as back home she had the same dilemma... Ella was actually more than happy to meet anyone that came her way. Laughing warmly at the name given to her by the stranger that was currently leaning on her table, she spoke.
“You’re very welcome. I think I managed to grab far too many as it is. Decreasing the amount ends up being a big help for me in the end.” Ella immediately dismissed the notion of owing her anything by a sweet wave of her hand and a smile forming on her lips. “No, please, don’t even worry about it. I have tons to spare, and Ella, my name’s Ella. Mind sharing yours?”
Flynn raised his brows in slight surprise at the unspoken challenge. “Of course I would be able, but wouldn’t it be a lot nicer to have your permission to just call you? More polite as well. I would hate to intrude your privacy for just a mug of hot chocolate.” He nodded lightly at her explanation and chuckled lightly when she did. “Is that so? Never thought about it that way. That’s a really good point you got there.” The thief was better off paying attention to his surroundings, but sometimes or rather most the time he couldn’t be bothered. Things did tend to fall in place for him with ease after all. He shrugged. “If you didn’t tell me I wouldn’t have known, but it’s all about the first impression. Losing your shoes doesn’t make you any less regal, does it? In a fairytail there was also a princess who did tend to lose hers.”
Ella had to give it to the guy, he was very good at coming up with a quick and rather smooth reply to whatever was thrown to him and that itself caused her to chuckle. “I suppose that is very true, and I’m beginning to have little doubt that you would actually be able to find me if needed.” Taking out a piece of paper and a pen she quickly jotted down her number handing over the piece of paper to him. "Just because I really believe that you should taste a good mug of hot chocolate. Who knows, I might end up gaining another hot chocolate fanatic." The blonde then proceeded in placing her pen back in her bag. Placing her attention back to Flynn, she shrugged her shoulders to his question. All her life she had lived in a small rural town near the capitol of France, and considering that she knew more of how to be a servant... she had no idea how a royal would act. "Honestly, I have no idea, but I can't imagine a princess of royal blood losing her shoes every-time she walks up and down a staircase. I always pictured a royal being so graceful. In any case, I doubt royalty will be in my future. Is there really? This is a fairytale I have to read then."

Rachel smiled at the girl. “I doubt it would be” she admitted. “But if it was, that would be cool. To have some of my art somewhere for people to see” she added, the idea suddenly exciting her. She made a mental note to try and pursue similar things in the future. Try and get her art out there. That way, maybe her mother would actually value it. If it was celebrate of praised, it would give the woman something to gloat about, at least.
The blonde picked up the pale pink chalk stick to her right and gently started shading. “Hm? Oh! No, no, it’s fine. You’re not blocking my light. It’s a night scene anyhow” she promised, laughing lightly.
“I don’t see why it wouldn’t be though…” The way Ella saw it, the painting on the ground was beautiful and depicted nothing derogatory, so why shouldn’t it be allowed? It added color to the grounds it would all be a positive thing. “They push us to get to know our mutant abilities more and to progress them so I can’t see anyone getting upset with a beautiful chalk painting. It’ll add more light and color to the place.”
The blonde smiled and was glad to hear that she hadn’t managed to mess up the creativity flow with her shadow. “Is it okay if I ask how you learned to draw?” She was curious to know because she truly liked how pretty the night scene looked.
