It was Saturday night. You and Sarah Cameron were tucked away on the old wicker couch in the screened in porch of the Chateau bathed in the warm hues of the golden hour. You were giggling together as usual and recapping the day.
Your laughs floated through the window to the living room where JJ had just laid down on the couch to eat a sandwhich. The corner of his lip curved up slightly at the sound.
"You need to stop playing like you're not in actual love with JJ, y/n," she giggled and shoved your shoulder lightly causing you to roll your eyes and stare at the ceiling. "Kie and me saw you pretty much drooling over him at the beach today."
His eyes widened and his chewing slowed.
"Was not," you mumbled unconvinsingly, sipping your glass of boxed wine. A blush crawled across your slightly sunburnt cheeks as you imagined him again, doing what he did best on his surf board.
"You always are and I don't know how he doesn't notice— and I'm sure he doesn't, because if he did he'd do something about it. He's so in love with you too."
His eyes narrowed as he waited for your response, heartbeat picking up pace in his chest.
"No he's not, he's been flirty with me for years. It's just how he is. I think he thinks he's getting on my nerves and that's why he does it but, oh my god— I kinda love it so much," you finally admitted, pressing the cold glass to your forehead as you felt your face getting hot and not just because of the sunburn.
JJ choked on his drink and pressed his knuckles to his lips to keep the two of you from hearing his coughs through the window. His mouth dropped open slightly in disbelief at the confession once he was done fighting for his life. He'd flirt with you every second of your life if that's what you wanted.
You peaked over at the blonde next to you to see her smiling at you triumphantly. "It kills me though. I know he'd never actually make a move and god I want him to sometimes. All the time, actually. And it's getting worse. He's never made me nervous like this."
Sarah squealed with excitement and clanked her glass against yours in an unsolicited cheers. "Thank you for your honesty, y/n. And no I'm serious, he does exactly what you do when he knows you're not looking, swear."
You rolled your eyes at her in disbelief. The two of you had been friends since you were kids. You figured you were a no fly zone for him. You leaned closer to her, voice dropping. “I swear, Sarah, it’s actually been driving me crazy. I have always had a crush on him but it's gotten so intense. Like— he gets more and more attractive every damn day—” You buried your face in your hands, groaning. “I can hardly look at him anymore, he's unfairly hot. And it’s not just that. I want him. All the time. Want him— like on top of me."
The two of you began to giggle uncontrollably. JJ, on the other hand was frozen in place. All he could do was gulp and fight the tightness of his pants and the urge to fly through the window screen.
"The way he was looking at your ass today when you and Kie were running to the water, I'm certain he'd happily get on top of you. Just go ask."
“Sarah! No.” you hissed, shoving her shoulder.
"Or...or when you were bent over with him looking for shark teeth. He was barely looking for teeth, I'll tell you that much."
"That doesn't mean anything. I know he looks at my boobs and stuff. He's admitted it to my face. He'd probably look at any boobs," you shook your head, cheeks burning and took a gulp of wine. “He has no idea. And it's gonna stay that way.”
Later, when the moon was higher you were in the hammock swaying lazily in the yard scrolling endlessly on your phone. The night was warm, fireflies flickering over the marsh, the fairy lights in the trees twinkling soft yellow. You let the hammock rock beneath you, trying to clear your head.
The ropes dipped suddenly under another weight as JJ dropped onto the hammock beside you, nearly making you yelp.
“Jesus, Jayj,” you exhaled, trying to steady the sway. “You can’t just—”
“Course I can.” His voice was low and lazy, a grin tugging at his lips as he settled close enough that his shoulder was brushing yours. “This is my hammock.”
You tried to roll your eyes, but your chest was so tight. The fairy lights lit him up in a way that made it worse—his golden hair a little messy from the day, eyes bright, his skin still sun-warmed. You couldn’t even look at him for too long without your pulse spiking.
He didn’t say much at first, just let the hammock sway, watching you like he was enjoying your squirming. You began to fiddle with the tiny loose braid in your hair that you'd started earlier when you were alone as you stared up at the trees, thinking about him of course. He really was all you could think about lately. It had become a real problem.
Then his hand reached out, almost casually, tugging at your work. He twisted the braid between his fingers, smirking faintly. “You always do this when you’re nervous?"
You blinked. “D-do what?”
“Play with your hair.” His grin grew. “Except now I’m the one doing it.”
Your stomach flipped and you felt as though you were going to melt through the holes in the hammock. You'd usually have a snappy comeback but suddenly you could barely form words, heat crawling up your cheeks. He leaned in close enough that his shoulder pressed into yours. The smell of saltwater, sun and smoke clung to him. It was dizzying.
You opened your mouth to tell him to stop messing with you, but he beat you to it—his voice dropping lower, softer.
“So, uh… about what I heard earlier.”
Your breath caught, and the hammock nearly tilted with how fast you turned to look at him. “What did you hear?”
He smiled, almost gently this time. “Porch window was open. You and Sarah weren’t exactly whispering.”
Your face went hot. “Oh my god—JJ—I—”
“Relax,” he murmured, eyes locked on you. “Don’t go all shy on me now. You’re so cute when you blush, you know that?”
You were stammering, words tripping over themselves. “I-I wasn’t—I didn’t mean—you weren’t supposed to—”
“Hey,” he cut in, thumb brushing over the braid still looped in his fingers. “Don’t be embarrassed. Or do be," he shrugged, "I've never seen you like this. I could get used to it."
You chewed on your bottom lip in defeat.
"But really, don't be embarassed, I liked hearing it. Kinda made my night. Or year—or, life if we're being honest.”
Your chest tightened, heartbeat pounding so loud you swore he could hear it. He tilted his head, watching your lips as you tried to form a response, but nothing came out but a shaky breath. He couldn't believe he could make you feel like this.
“See, Princess?” he teased softly, a smile plastered on his face. “Can’t even talk. That’s how bad you’ve got it.” His grin softened as he stared down at your lips. “Good thing I’ve got it just as bad. Always have."
The words hit you like a wave. Before you could think, his mouth was on yours—warm and slow at first, the hammock rocking dangerously under the shift. Your hand curled into his shirt, breath hitching as he deepened the kiss, thumb still tangled in your hair. You let out a soft moan as he used his other hand the grab your waist and pull you closer.
He pulled back just enough to rest his forehead against yours. “You have no idea what you do to me," he whispered, rubbing his thumb on your cheek, eyes locked on your lips. Then his mouth curved back into a smirk, "I've always thought you were unfairly hot too.”
