Star Wars would be SO good if it was good

There really is the potential for something brilliant in the prequels.

We are told that knights were chivalrous slayers of dragons and rescuers of princesses. In reality they were groomed from birth to be shock troops. We are told that samurai were paragons of honor and duty when they were really mercenaries happy to change allegiances. We are told in the original trilogy that the Jedi were honorable mystic warriors and then in the prequels we see them use their mystical Jedi mind powers to try and save a couple bucks.

There's a seed of historical resonance to the Jedi: a message about the whitewashing of historical legacies, the way ideological and mystical movements are co-opted and corrupted by the state, the heroic tales of swords and sorcery meeting the daily humdrum of trade disputes and blockades, the kind of frankly clever and highbrow theme that you very rarely see in big-budget cinema. Unfortunately, the caretaker of that seed was George Lucas.

Today I learned about the inaccessible island rail, which is the smallest extant flightless bird on the planet. It is also the world’s most remote. The island is only 12 kilometers, or 5 miles long.

So fascinating.
