of the original seven that remained, the ones that xiao kept in contact with were his beloved lord and barbatos, the anemo archon and the archon of freedom. freedom was something that many people wanted during the war--a freedom to not have to fight, to make their own choices, and xiao....xiao felt that. he could understand that in full, he could understand why those that were fighting would crave such a thing. in fact, he was one of those beings that craved freedom so, before he was under the command of his beloved lord.
the only people that he had spoken about his mortal lover to (that were alive, anyway) were his lord, the adeptus madame ping, and barbatos. his lord had actually met the mortal lover, once upon a time, coming across them laying together in a field during a quiet moment, upon which he went to introduce himself to them. it was slightly awkward, but...it turned out well, in the end.
in order to get the kind of tea that his lover once loved in order to bring to their shrine, the adeptus was forced to speak to madame ping about them. the old woman had listened respectfully and politely, smiling and nodding when applicable, before passing him a small sachet of the tea--enough to brew four cups. but xiao would only be brewing one, as his love could not share it with him.
and barbatos--he always kind of knew, through the whispers of the wind, of the love the two shared. when they died, barbatos was with him when he grieved, helping him to remain tethered to the ground and to his mind. once the initial grief passed, xiao spoke to the god about it, and in response, the god wrote a lovely ballad about the two of them. perhaps those in mondstat had unwillingly heard of the story of the adeptus and the doctor.
when nilou speaks, xiao has gone quiet again, his eyes closing as he nuzzles closer to her. it seems like he's going to fall asleep, like this, and perhaps he would; he has not felt so safe in so long. even though his silence and sleepy state would seem to state otherwise, he is listening to her, and in response to her words, reaches over and gives her hand a little squeeze as if to say yes, i'm here, thank you for your words.
