WHO: lottie & open
there was something about crushing ingredients into their smallest forms that kept lottie’s mind from wandering anywhere other than the task at hand. pestle pushing deeper in her palm as she crushed the small leaves in her ceramic bowl felt soothing, as though there was nothing else to worry about but the task at hand. she rarely heard the chatter of others in her division as they moved around each other, reaching for this and that ingredient for this and that potion, which helped when working on especially advanced potions like this. concentration, she found, was key, and she was all too happy to have her mind occupied on work.
this meant, though, that when people did speak to her, she rarely heard them at all. it was only the flash of movement from the corner of her eyes that had her raise her head, surprised to see someone standing in the doorway. it felt as though her surroundings finally came into focus, and the silence that hung in the room felt almost stifling, now. “I’m sorry, did you need something?” the question she’d rather have asked was what time is it? but it felt like it was much too late for such a question not to be concerning, and she really would rather avoid any concern. she really, really would.
CHARLOTTE MEADOWES really is the spitting image of DIANA SILVERS, right? For someone only 21 years old, LOTTIE has been forced to endure so much. Yeah, that MUGGLEBORN has been scraping by at the sanctuary since MARCH, 2028, working as a POTIONEER in the DIVISION OF RESEARCH. SHE is a CISWOMAN and is known to be DEFENSIVE and EXTRAVAGANT but also CREATIVE and DEDICATED. Best of luck surviving through this.
CHARACTER PARALLELS: elena gilbert (tvd), buffy summers (btvs), nancy wheeler (stranger things), buttercup (the princess bride), francis houseman (dirty dancing), alice kingsleigh (alice in wonderland), scott mccall (teen wolf), romeo montague (romeo & juliet)
some time ago, the meadowes family adopt three children; two of whom enrol at hogwarts, while the other passes the age of eleven without incident, and without magic. the first wizarding war begins not long after, and their daughter, dorcas, acts as a double agent for the order for years until she dies at the hand of voldemort himself. they know little of what she did during the war, but still hold onto her memory dearly.
charlotte is born in a small cottage just off the coast of scotland, her scream piercing the quietness of the little village for barely a second before dying off, her eyes wide and all too curious. veterans of the second wizarding war, charlotte was a surprise that her parents had never wished for. there was, of course, nothing but love in their eyes as they cared for their newborn daughter, but there was also fear: that they couldn’t give her what she needed, that they were too broken to be proper parents. they spent but a few years with her before they were killed, leaving their young daughter alone just as they had feared.
she was soon taken in by her uncle and his wife, both of whom knew of the wizarding world, but had no magic of their own. they took her in and cared for her just as they had their own children, but, just maybe, worried about her slightly more. she showed signs of her magical abilities early on, and, to the meadowes family, magic had come to be a source of fear for them. not of magic itself, but of the world it came with. they had, after all, lost two family members to the wars borne from it, and they feared how it might affect their children.
raised in a muggle family, charlotte has more knowledge of the muggle world than she ever has of the wizarding world; except for the stories her family has
she knows her parents were killed, but she doesn’t know by who.
loves art and sells her art online.
she’s got a lot of raw magic, but she’s also not very good at school and so she doesn’t have a lot of control over that magic ; high emotions can trigger her magic like it would have before she got to hogwarts.
she has dyslexia, which she learned when she was learning how to read and write, but didn’t understand what it meant until she got to school and realized just how difficult it made everything.
the only class she was good at was potions, and once she realized that, she quickly became one of the top students in her year. she focused pretty much all of her studies on potions, despite working on her casting wherever she could/when she wasn’t feeling defeated.
hogwarts was difficult because of her position as a perceived muggleborn, which engendered a lot of bullying from her classmates who were blood purists.
alcohol tw super sweet, loved helping people out. the kind of girl who gets really shitfaced at parties, though, and make friends with people in bathrooms at those parties tbh. end tw
lesbian af.
focused alot on potions and created the draught of peace potion whenever her friends really needed it/when attacks by death eaters were mounting. also used potions against some of her bullies to get them to leave her alone.
super insecure about the fact that she wasn’t that great at casting and such, but she joins the order not long after leaving hogwarts, partially to protect herself, and partially to protect other people.
fratricide tw, death tw, sickness tw after spending the holidays with some friends, lottie flew up to visit her family in early january. she knocked at the door of their family home, happy to be back home, although worried for the state of her cousin, whom her adoptive mom had told her had gotten sick and had contracted a high fever. it was that fought which came just before the screams inside the house. lottie dropped all her things and barged through the door, her wand pulled out of her pocket despite how useless she felt with it. she found her two youngest cousins huddled in the corner, her oldest cousin advancing on them
she couldn’t tell anyone what she did to get his attention, only that when he turned, he set his sights on her just as he had her cousins. she remembers telling him to stop; telling him to go back to bed, that everything would be fine, but he just kept coming, until her cousins moved and was on top of them in seconds; until he was no longer moving. she remembers doing it, remembers killing her cousin, but the details of that day are foggy at best. she remembers trying to help her cousins out from their older brother; remembers her youngest cousin recoiling at her touch and looking at him as the glamour dissipated, leaving only the truth of what he’d become end tw
lottie is, admittedly, in shock at all of it. she talks with the aurors who come investigating what happened, but isn’t of much use. she asks if she can go back to london and goes back to her friends
disassociation tw she can’t remember much of what she did after that. right now, she’s managed some semblance of who she was before, but she still has a lot of moments where she’s just; not there. she feels as though she isn’t really there anymore. sure, she forgets about it sometimes and she’s able to smile and all, but everything feels foggy. end tw
she still acts really nice and is always willing to help people, but she feels as if she’s not what she was before
thanks to the new arrangements, she’s been able to really focus her energies on making potions, which she’s really been enjoying and she’s found it really helpful in feeling grounded again.
