Fernando Botero, "orange", 1977
Boterismo
TIL that Fernando Botero, known for what he called his "fat" figures, nearly went insane attempting his first still life painting. He mainly painted people, but one day he was captivated by a bowl of oranges on the kitchen table, and decided to paint them. He soon discovered that, no matter how hard you try, there simply isn't a way to make a spherical object look "fat". No one will know if you are being true to your signature obese style (Boterismo), people are just gonna see a normal still life of fruit that could have been painted by anyone. And this is enough to make a painter go bananas - bananas so fat they look like lemons.
