The Mind’s Eye

The Mind’s Eye is an establishment where glamour is essential. There are two entrances, through the secret doorway in Grimaldi Tailoring — where the lucky guests who are invited and possess a ticket are shown through— or through a twisting alleyway that leads you to a dead-end and a brick wall. The enchanted brickwork presents you with a challenging riddle to solve before being granted entry. If neither of these are accessible to you, your only way inside is if you have the desired funds to be allowed entry, and the glamorous dress code to go with it. The glamorous speak-easy bar shimmers under the chandeliers and in the dim lighting, you will find live jazz acts, singers and dancers, exquisite cocktails expertly made from mysterious unlabelled bottles behind the bar. This is a place where trades and deals of the magical variety — that wouldn’t be acceptable anywhere else— can be made.

“Wiccan?” Louie relented into a breathy laugh before allowing their shoulders to touch. Louie was sure any potential Wicca’s out there would be offended to even be associated with him. “You just leave the ‘Wicca’ stuff to me.” He told her, leaning in to wipe the remainder of the tears away from Vivian’s cheeks. “If this is what you really want, I’ll help you do it.” Louie promised her, “But we’re going to need some support. There’s someone I can contact that might stand to gain something out of this little excursion too.” Louie told her, his hand falling from her cheek. “Do you think you can sit tight until I do that? Don’t try anything else.” If Marius got wind of what they were once again attempting, it wouldn’t be long before it was all shut down and entirely out of their grasp once again.

Hearing his laugh momentarily distracted Vivian from her woes. The corners of her lips tugging upward at his amusement. She was reminded of the many times that laugh saved her from her torment under Marius’ thumb, the bond that the two shared. She leaned into his touch slightly, the comfort it brought more than Viv could ever express into words. She pursed her lips lightly at Louie’s words, giving him a sideway glance at the prospect of including someone else in their plans. “I don’t know about that, Lou. Trust is not exactly something we can spare here” she mentioned as she considered his words, resisting the anxiety that she could feel building. “But…” she added with a sigh, “If you trust this person than I’m game. I trust you.” And she did. He was probably one of the few people in this town she could trust with her life. “I promise i’ll be on my best behavior,” she teased, nudging him playfully as the tears dried from her eyes. “Besides, I, uhm, there’s some loose ends I want to tie up here. You know, just in case…”

Louie nodded as she settled into agreeing with him. “I wouldn’t invite anyone in who I thought would hurt us.” He promised her. They had enough people like that, enough people who could have helped them all those years ago and did nothing. “You’re not going to die, Viv,” Louie promised, because he would have died himself before he let that happen. “I won’t let it happen.” He spoke his thoughts aloud, before sitting back. “Let me make some arrangements, we can meet up again soon. Just… try to stay calm for now. Whatever you saw in that future, it doesn’t have to come to pass. But, I think you’re right. This has to end.” It had been long enough that they had both been running, hiding.

The night was winding down and The Mind’s Eye had seen one of it’s busiest yet. After the trouble the hacks had caused, there had been a momentary blip in their custom, but now it seemed people were seeking out less conventional ways of protecting themselves and keeping their information private, and with that a whole other plethora of items; The Mind’s Eye had seen a new level of custom and traders.

As things began to be cleaned down, Louie remained sat in the booths, still looking over plans for one of his latest events. Pouring over the spells that would need to be altered and tweaked for it to be perfect. Thinking of these trivial things distracted him from the aftermath of what this alternate future had brought him. When he heard a voice, he lifted his head, “Kyoko,” He greeted, “A busy night,” He paused, “Good to see after all the trouble that has been caused, no?” Louie said, Kyoko didn’t need to read his mind to know that Louie was taking a jab at her son.

Louie and Mercy usually tried to meet once a month, in the same coffee shop at the same time and place. This day, however, Louie had been waiting for some time and the deity still had not shown herself. Louie checked his phone, huffing quietly and staring at the coffee and the banana bread he’d ordered for her. It seemed he’d been stood up.

Beginning to worry that perhaps something had happened, Louie decided to call around to her apartment. Most would have thought him an idiot for worrying so much over a deity that could defend herself far better than most other creatures on Earth, but despite Mercy’s irritation over it, he wouldn’t stop worrying about her. He pressed the buzzer to her apartment, waiting to see if there would be an answer. He couldn’t remember doing anything wrong, though he’d been wrong before…

Louie looked down at the takeaway box of their food held in his hands that the lady that owned the cafe had insisted that he take on with him, before hearing the door buzz and then click to let him inside. He made his way up the stairs until he reached Mercy’s apartment, knocking and waiting for her to let him inside. When she did, he could almost sense the tension between them, but he didn’t know why…

“Merce,” He greeted, offering her the box of baked goods, “You sure you’re okay for me to come in?” Louie could have read her mind, but he’d made a promise that he wouldn’t. Everyone was behaving so strangely since the covens had offered to allow people to see into their potential futures….

“Did you go to one of the covens?”

She waited by the door, impatiently twisting her fingers together. It wasn’t Louie’s fault, she reminded herself. The future had been hard and Mercy had only made it more difficult for her friend. They might have loved each other but she saw how much he loved Kang as well. Mercy being rescued had just destroyed that. Even though it wasn’t a real future, she still didn’t want to be the one to cause anyone pain. Especially her friends.

When he knocked, she hesitated for a moment before finally pulling the door open. Her heart lurched with the memory of how much they could love each other and any chance of smiling slipped away. “Hello, Louie,” she greeted, taking the box from his hands with a quiet thank you. “Yes, of course, you can come in,” she agreed. 

Stepping aside, she opened the door for him but she froze, her eyes going wide. “W - what? Why would you say that?” she asked, trying to play it off. Mercy was a terrible liar and she knew he’d see it on her face she she hastily made her way to the kitchen instead.

Louie followed her inside, taking in the familiar apartment before turning back to her wide-eyed face. “Because I know a lot of people were curious,” He told her, wondering if she would dart off to the side like a deer, “And when I mentioned it just now you got all jittery and nervous, and I’ve only ever seen your eyes do that when you’re lying.” Louie added, but followed it with a slow smile, hoping to be reassuring. “What did I do now?” He asked, wondering what horrific thing she had seen him do.

If Elijah were looking for sympathy, Louie wasn’t the right person to come to, but that didn’t mean, however, that his methods were without a need to help the man, to see him in a better state than he was currently. Apparently the sympathy he’d been getting from others wasn’t doing its job, regardless. “Sometimes betrayal is just something we have to swallow. It’s not easy, but sometimes it’s necessary. Talk to your son, get the answers you need to not only help yourself, but your relationship, him. What do you think will happen when people find out what he has done? Do you think they’ll take kindly to it? He will need his father and if you’re willing to be there, well, perhaps this is the new chapter you’ve been searching for…” Louie sat back, drawing a whiskey decanter towards himself and two tumblers, filling them with heavy doses before he pushed one towards Elijah. “Drink.”

Elijah couldn’t help closing his eyes with a small wince. When people found out what Eiji had done, they would be furious. Not about the curse, but about the hacks, and Elijah didn’t know how well he could protect him. It was certainly a new chapter, but he had no idea how it would go. “I’ll speak with him, I just need to figure out what the hell I’m going to say.” He took a sip from the glass Louie gave him with a raised eyebrow. “Careful, I’m a bit of a lightweight and I drove here.” He could probably teleport back to the tower even if he was halfway drunk, but he’d have to come back for the car.

“Good.” Louie bluntly responded when Elijah mentioned being a lightweight, “All the better to figure out what you’re going to say to your son.” He grasped his own glass, clinking it with Elijah’s before taking a sip. Louie wouldn’t mind sending for a town car to get Elijah back to the Remington tower. Normally, it would have been an opportunity to find out further information or secrets from somebody, but his loyalty to Elijah was building and for once Louie likely, probably, wouldn’t use it against him.

Vivian chewed on her lip nervously as she scanned Louie’s features for his reaction to what she’d just shared. The young vampire felt bad for inviting him to her home under slightly false pretenses, but if anyone would understand what she was going through it was him. In truth she had missed him terribly and wanted to catch up, but as soon as they’d settled on her swing outside she’d all but blurted out everything right then and there. She at least managed to make the two of them a drink before sharing everything she’d learned from her alternate memories, figuring he’d need one after hearing it all. Vivian had laid it all out for him, her being recursed, the torture she’d done to those they cared about, ever last painful detail. Wiping away a few stray tears from her cheeks, Viv attempted to steal herself as she waited for Louie to take it all in. “And… and that’s why I want to go after him… to end this once and for all. The way I see it now, i-it’s either him or me,” she managed to get out, adverting her eyes as she took an encouraging sip of her drink.

He had decided not to see into one of the many potential futures the covens had seen, but it appeared Vivian had, and as always, their lives seemed to circle back towards one man that was intent on ruining it.

It wasn’t as though Louie hadn’t imagined a time when he could see the light drain from Marius’ eyes. He’d have liked to think he’d enjoy it, soak up the satisfaction of his demise just as Marius has soaked up the power of every person he’d corrupted Louie into murdering in his name.

So Louie sat, his hands clasped, near-black eyes watching the white in his own knuckles, before they lifted to watch Viv wipe away her tears. He couldn’t watch that any more without at least trying to do something to stop what was causing her pain. “Do you know where he is?” Louie asked. The dark witch had tracked the man once, but that had been years ago, when Colletta was perceived ‘missing’. He moved often, making it difficult, but not impossible.

The blonde watched her best friend take in the news, hearting his heartbeat quicken as he processed the news. The woman felt awful for dredging up old feelings, as well as filling him in on their alternate futures. A part of her had wanted to just leave him out of her potential suicide mission, but she knew Louie deserved to be apart of whatever retribution she attempted to get at Marius’ demise.

Viv contemplated his questions with a shaky breath before she responded. “I tried calling a couple of my old contacts, but nothing panned out. There are a few more I could call, but I didn’t wanna run the risk of tipping him off,” she admitted with a shake of her head. “I was thinking we could maybe try a locator spell? Or, you know, something else Wiccan to find him? I don’t even know if that even exists, honestly. That’s definitely more up your alley,” she tried to tease but it didn’t quite meet her eyes.

For some reason he’d thought Louie might be sympathetic about his uncomfortable revelations, but apparently not. Ah well, maybe he was just too young. “It’s hard to ask the last person I thought I could trust why he betrayed me.”

It would be difficult for anyone to comprehend that, regardless of how many possible futures there were. Louie’s brow furrowed and he dipped his hand into his pocket to retrieve his phone, sending a message with regrets that he needed to cancel all interviews for the day. “I think we should go inside somewhere…” Louie suggested, “There’s a pancake place close, come on.” It wasn’t exactly Louie’s scene, at all, but he remembered how much Kang had liked the waffles.

“Yeah. And you’d think I’d be okay with it since I’m not actually dead now, but it was still pretty rough because, well…” Kang confessed even when he could not quite finish the sentence. He watched Louie pull out his phone to shoot a text off before the witch looked back at him again and made that suggestion.

The idea of pancakes sounded great in the moment and the fox spirit grabbed his phone from the ground before turning to look at the other man. “I thought you had somewhere to get to. Weren’t you on the way there now? You really don’t have to…” he started, face warming at the thought of having disrupted Louie’s day. “Like you said, it was just a silly future.”

Louie’s eyes narrowed as he waited for Kang to finish the end of that sentence, but he never did, making Louie all the more suspicious and curious. “I’m sure the search for my new bar manager can wait another day. If they are anything like my previous applicants they will all be hopelessly incompetent anyway.” Louie huffed. In truth, they were fine, but fine wasn’t enough. “Come on. I know how much you like pancakes.” Louie insisted, already leading forwards.

Louie liked to know everything and anything that happened of interest around the city, mostly because it boded well for business at The Mind’s Eye to be ahead of everyone’s game. Sometimes the pieces of information that came his way were small, not all that interesting, like a woman wondering around on the look out for a particular, run-of-the-mill item (at least in Louie’s books.) But, as it so happened Louie was bored and sending the persistent woman with two names an invite to his exclusive The Mind’s Eye that evening was a temporary fix to that. Perhaps he was just avoiding finding out anymore about his potential future than the people around him had already revealed without his consent.

The chandeliers overhead sparkled in the dim lamp lit speakeasy. The Elven singer on stage sang in sultry tones while the band played a bluesy number behind her to accompany. There was no theme to tonight’s event, only people looking for entertainment, people looking to trade, the legal and the illegal of the magical world.

Louie stood by the bar, watching over his establishment as it thrived for another evening. Eventually, he noticed that the woman had arrived through the entrance reserved for invited guests and he waited for her to snake further into the bar. “Olivia, is it?” He asked, though he somehow managed to seem patrionising in a matter of three words.

She hesitated to answer because no, she was by herself and yes, she was avoiding him. “No, nothing like that...” she said, trailing off. That memory made her fill with guilt. It seemed like she had a lot to feel guilty about lately.

Louie’s brow arched. That certainly was unexpected. “What sort of curse?” Louie asked curiously. Regardless of it’s intentions, a son didn’t usually get someone to curse their father over nothing. Though, perhaps a spoilt rich boy would. “Your son. Is he the boy born without powers?” Louie asked. Despite having Kyoko under his employment, it wasn’t as though she and Louie sat around having heart-to-hearts. In-fact they barely spoke, aside from business and Louie’s information about the Remington’s was from well-sourced rumour, media and Elijah himself. “Have you confronted him?”

“My magic is slowly becoming weaker, eventually it’ll be gone entirely. At the moment it doesn’t interfere with my daily life, but large scale magic takes a physical toll.” He nodded and looked down at the glass in his hands again, not really wanting to face Louie’s reaction. “Eiji, he’s the older one. He’s one of our fixers but has no magical ability of his own.” There was a sad tinge to his voice, and Elijah was left wondering whether it would have been better or worse if his younger son had cursed him instead. “I haven’t yet. I don’t know what I can say to him.”

He hadn’t exactly hidden his disdain for the whole ordeal, but given that Kang was new to this world, Louie supposed he could understand how confusing it must be. “It’s just a vision of one possible future out of countless others. There’s nothing to say that anything in it will actually transpire.” The dark witch tried to reassure, though it admittedly wasn’t one of his strong points. He exhaled quietly, “You should try not to let it bother you too much. There are infinite possibilities. It’s why I chose not to know.” Louie added, though clearly something had transpired between them in that future to cause such a reaction. “I’m sorry, for whatever it was.” The witch added, almost upon reflex, assuming he would have done something wrong. “But I don’t have much control over my future selves.”

“No, I know… But I just wanted to know what it was like to see one,” Kang smiled a small smile.

“What? No! You did nothing wrong,” the fox spirit said hastily, hating that Louie immediately assumed that he had done something wrong. “You were perfect in that world. We were together until…” Kang made a face as images of their last mission together flashed through his mind. “We were together until I died. In your arms.” And now that Kang was saying it out loud, he was just realising how sad he had been to leave Louie behind. He averted his eyes from the dark witch, finding that he could not look at Louie and so he had to look down at the ground instead. “Sorry. It’s unfair to dump that on you especially since you didn’t want to know. Like I said, it was pretty intense…”

Louie and Mercy usually tried to meet once a month, in the same coffee shop at the same time and place. This day, however, Louie had been waiting for some time and the deity still had not shown herself. Louie checked his phone, huffing quietly and staring at the coffee and the banana bread he’d ordered for her. It seemed he’d been stood up.

Beginning to worry that perhaps something had happened, Louie decided to call around to her apartment. Most would have thought him an idiot for worrying so much over a deity that could defend herself far better than most other creatures on Earth, but despite Mercy’s irritation over it, he wouldn’t stop worrying about her. He pressed the buzzer to her apartment, waiting to see if there would be an answer. He couldn’t remember doing anything wrong, though he’d been wrong before…

Louie had half been expecting that maybe Mercy had been called into the hospital unexpectedly, when her voice came through the intercom. “Merce, it’s me.” He replied, slipping his hands into the pockets of his jacket. “Did you forget we were meeting today?”

The voice that rang through the crackly speaker was not the one she expected. “Louie?” she questioned before she let go of the intercom. Oh god, she shouldn’t have said anything. She should have just texted him instead of just ignoring their plans. “Crap,” she cursed to herself. Well it was too late to pretend like she wasn’t there, she had acknowledged him already. Tentatively pressing the intercom again, she acted like she hadn’t just been radio silent for thirty seconds. “Oh, I must have forgotten. So sorry, we’ll have to catch up next time.”

Louie frowned at the way she said his name over the intercom. So, she was just going to leave him standing outside? “Are you busy with someone?” He asked. It wasn’t as though she couldn’t have plans with other people, after all… Maybe Louie had gotten too used to being able to see her at this time every other week. “I’m holding an event at The Mind’s Eye, tonight. I thought you might like to come, was all.” Louie paused again, “I can leave the invite instructions in your mail box if you’d rather.”

“Okay.” Louie replied slowly, if a little confused by Kang’s blatant lying. Perhaps Kang was just a little embarrassed, or perhaps he regretted his actions from the week of heat, though he hadn’t made any mention of it until now. Maybe he was someone else to have been shaken by the news of the Effendi? Louie thought it was self-inflicted, but he digressed. “Alright. Well, I have to get back to The Mind’s Eye for some interviews. I hope you feel better.” Louie added with an awkward nod. Awkwardness was something Louie didn’t often feel and it had him pausing. “If I’ve done something wrong, I promise I won’t envelop you in thorns again if you were to tell me.” Louie made the ominous promise. It was meant to be genuine, but to any passers-by probably sounded psychotic.

Kang could practically taste the awkwardness between them that he was certain he was the cause of since he all but ghosted the man a few days ago. And to see Louie right in front of him looking awkward like that had him wanting to relent. None of this was Louie’s fault when Kang was the one who was behaving oddly.

He could not help a small chuckle at the dark witch’s words as he remembered the first time the man sent thorns out to get him in his mind. Those days were long past by now and did not matter, just as this supposed future that they prevented from coming to pass and in that moment, Kang felt a little silly for avoiding Louie in the first place.

“It’s not you, I promise,” he said and reached out to place a reassuring hand on Louie’s arm. “Well, it kind of is but not really…” Kang sighed. “I went to Effendi Plaza a few days ago to, y’know…” he said vaguely because they were still in public. “It was a pretty intense experience, that’s all…”

“Oh.” Louie responded in his realisation. He hadn’t exactly hidden his disdain for the whole ordeal, but given that Kang was new to this world, Louie supposed he could understand how confusing it must be. “It’s just a vision of one possible future out of countless others. There’s nothing to say that anything in it will actually transpire.” The dark witch tried to reassure, though it admittedly wasn’t one of his strong points. He exhaled quietly, “You should try not to let it bother you too much. There are infinite possibilities. It’s why I chose not to know.” Louie added, though clearly something had transpired between them in that future to cause such a reaction. “I’m sorry, for whatever it was.” The witch added, almost upon reflex, assuming he would have done something wrong. “But I don’t have much control over my future selves.”
