Kate stood in the front hallway of the Barton's home, her hands full with her overnight bag and unexpected christmas gifts from Laura and Clint: a dark purple leather collar for Lucky and a first aid kit. Guess whose gift was whose. She waved goodbye, gift bags flailing, after giving everyone their respective hugs. She thanked them repeatedly for allowing her to stay for Christmas, she appreciated it more than they knew. Lucky sat patiently by the car as Clint helped Kate load her things into the trunk.
"In you go pizza dog." Clint said, as he opened the side door and waved the dog into the back seat.
"Thank you for driving me back to the airport, I would have ubered but I don't think they have uber out here, and you know, frozen credit cards." Kate laughed briefly as she climbed into the passenger seat.
"Don't mention it kid."
~~~~~~
Kate found herself standing in front of her apartment door, contemplating entering. Suddenly, the world felt a bit empty. The excitement of helping Clint on his mission (well, their mission) that ultimately changed her life, feels like it's only finally coming to an end now that the excitement of Christmas is over. Now what? Her mother was in jail, her apartment was still a wreck, Clint is home, and she doesn't have access to her money, not yet at least. She stood staring at the doorknob, hands starting to hurt as the straps from the bags dug into her fingers. Lucky made a noise as he brushed his nose against Kate's hand.
"Sorry buddy, you must be hungry."
She looked the door up and down one last time before placing the bags on the ground and reaching forward to unlock her door. It smelled cold and damp, only one light was working and the floor was littered with muddy firefighter footprints and various damaged possessions. Kate sighed, she closed the door behind her before pulling out her phone to call a few people to try and sort things out. First things first: credit cards. Once she had access to her money, she could hire someone to fix her apartment.
She'd finally contacted everyone she'd needed to and sat down at her kitchen table. A pot crusted with old macaroni stared back at her, a single fork stuck to the bottom. Lucky snored lightly as he slept on the floor beside an empty plate that briefly held a peanut butter sandwich. Kate twiddled her thumbs as she bit her lip, fighting off the tears that made their way to her eyes. She let out a shaky breath before tilting her head back and closing her eyes, bouncing her right leg. Kate hadn't had a second to process everything that happened. But she was feeling it all now. She finally broke, with her head falling into her hands she sobbed into her kitchen table. She felt like an orphan. Would she have to take over the company? Were there more skeletons in the business she was about to uncover? She also missed her mother deeply- she would know what to do in this situation. Lucky awoke and turned his head to look at her, he got up slowly before placing his head on her lap.
"Thanks buddy, sorry to wake you." Kate smiled.
~~~~~~
Two weeks had passed before Kate's apartment was finally livable. A few of the windows were still covered in plywood but the water damage was taken care of and most of her possessions were surprisingly saved. Kate had been staying at her aunt’s place, turns out she wasn’t returning from holidays until the end of January anyways. This gave Kate some time to clean things up properly after her and Clint had crashed there. Kate and Jack had decided it would be best if he took over the company for the time being until Kate was a bit older, at least until she finished college. She was honestly relieved she didn't have to take on this responsibility. Though, she did admit it must be somewhat infuriating for her mother to witness the man she framed replace her at her own company. Kate laughed to herself about it sometimes. Nonetheless, things were finally starting to feel stable again, not quite normal, but stable. Kate had even bought Lucky real dog food and a set of bowls. Clint told Kate to stay out of trouble and text him only when she needed something, so naturally she texted him almost every day. He didn't seem to mind as much anymore. The winter sun was already gone when Kate sat down at her kitchen table, fiddling with her only fork. Street lights spilled through the windows behind her onto the table as she glanced at the empty space where the macaroni pot once was, contemplating what to have for dinner.
"Were you waiting for me to cook for you again Kate Bishop?"
Kate jumped up from her chair as she spun around and threw her fork at the voice coming from behind her. The figure stepped out of the shadows after catching the fork in front of their face.
"We have to stop meeting like this." Yelena joked.
"Excuse me, you have to stop breaking into my apartment!"
"Ugh how many times do I have to tell you I did not break anything, you have no locks on your windows."
Kate frowned before crossing her arms. "Why are you here then?"
"What, no: 'How was your Christmas?' 'Did you have a good new years?'" Yelena scoffed as she took a few steps forward, looking down at the fork as she twirled it around in her hand. "No hospitality Kate Bishop, but it was lovely, I got to see the big tree like you suggested, thanks for asking." She smiled devilishly as her eyes met Kate's.
"I know, I was there for that." Skepticism radiating from her body language.
"Yes you were, I recall you destroyed the tree too yes?" Yelena let out a small laugh as Kate's mouth opened to protest, before quickly shutting as she remembered she did in fact, cause it to fall over.
"Come sit, please, we have much to discuss."
Yelena made her way to the opposite side of the kitchen table and claimed the same seat she did the first time. She leaned back and let her left arm drape over the seat beside her, fork still dangling from her finger tips.
Kate stood for a moment, eyeing her every move before sitting down on the chair opposite Yelena, hands clasped together tightly in her lap.
"De ja vu." Yelena smiled.
Kate sighed, "What do you want?"
"What I want, is for the world to be a safe place for girls like you and me to roam free without fear."
"What do you mean?" Kate raised her eyebrows.
"I did not know my real mother or father, I have no family, as of recently you've found yourself in a somewhat similar situation."
Kate's chest felt like static as a memory of her mother getting arrested flashed in her mind. Her eyes threatening to water before she inhaled deeply.
"Did you come here to mock me, is that it?" A tinge of anger in her tone.
"Of course not, I am trying to show you that you and I are not so different, we want the same things." Yelena's tone was softer, Kate studied her intently before deciding she was being serious. Kate leaned forward bringing her clasped hands onto the table, gesturing for Yelena to continue.
"There are currently many lost Widows out there that are still under mind control. One-"
"Mind control?" Kate interrupted.
"Yes, mind control. We were not just trained killers, we were also stripped of our free will." Yelena's face went hard. Her eyes looked as though they held so much pain. She looked at the floor before leaning forward to to mimic Kate's hands on the table.
"How do you stop it?" Kate asked hesitantly.
"There is an antidote. When exposed to it, it counteracts the mind control, and they are set free." Yelena was staring intensely at Kate who gave her a small nod.
"One of them is in New York City. I'm asking you, Kate Bishop, if you would help me find her."
