One more post from my recent Hornet cosplay, this time the wip/progress pics when sewing Hornet's cloak!
This was a bit daunting as I had never tackled anything so large before - my prior sewing experience was more accessories, belts, bows, stuffed tails, that sort of thing, and not full outfits! I had a couple ideas in mind for her cloak, (boning, petticoat, ballgown panels, etc) but ultimately ended up going for a double circle skirt with horsehair as it seemed like the easiest option for my sewing skill, while giving the perfect flowy look!
I decided on using duchess satin because obviously Hornet is a princess and deserves nice fabric ♥️ it was quite heavy but I think it ended working out well as the weight gave it some solid structure! I used a crimson satin for the outside, and chose to line it with black satin - that step maaay not have been necessary, but I think it made the overall cosplay look much sleeker and cohesive 😅
I drafted my pattern with the help of La Modéliste's YouTube tutorial and an online calculator, and got to work! I first cut out my pattern, sewed the pieces together as needed and then attached the horsehair first to the wrong side, and then folded and ironed underneath to give a clean finish. I then spent a solid amount of time hand stitching a catch stitch to keep the horsehair in place... this did take awhile.. orz Then it was time to attach the black lining underneath, for which I hand sewed a ladder stitch ALL the way around, 10/10 do not recommend, took me probably three days straight, but it meant there was NO ugly seam showing on the front!!
Last, but not least, I took some scraps from my crimson satin and attempted few different collar/cone shapes until I found one I was happy with; then used thick interfacing on one side to keep it stiff before sewing at the neck hole and attaching some snaps to keep it closed. I am still terrible at getting crisp corners, so that's something to improve on next time 🥲
I also accidentally forgot one poor lonely pin and entombed it inside the lining, and had to stage a rescue operation so that it wouldn't stab me at the convention 🫠
new cosplay, new little behind the scenes progress pics post!!
Perfection is the enemy of good.. no better quote sums up this cosplay! Basic assembly of the foam pattern was fine, but once we got to sanding down the white foam clay on top.. oh boy. I spent legit months off and on hand sanding this thing, before giving up and buying a tiny hobby drill and turning that into a DIY mini sander.. much more efficient!
Once I was happy with the overall smoothness (and also had no time left budgeted to sand more :P) I coated the clay in Flexbond, before painting with white rustoleum spray paint! I then sealed it on top with more Flexbond because I was terrified of it cracking in the icy winds of Sydney's cold winter ❄️ however this did leave it vulnerable to rain... and ofc, it rained day of the convention 🥲 Last step was glueing in black mesh over the eye holes for that perfect blacked out eye effect!
As challenging as some bits were I absolutely am over the moon with how it all came together ♥️ this is my first big cosplay where I've made pretty much everything myself from scratch.. all the long nights sewing horsehair and sanding was worth it!
this has been living rent free in my head ever since I saw the transmog option.. as a melee ZAM gang it's a shame she's locked behind Desert :'((
some WIP shots of the big chonker dragon tail for Tohru! Originally I tried following a few tail patterns (furries, y'all are lifesavers for that) but after some trial and error eventually drafted my own- it's really not so bad? (Although I did have to trim down the top after it was all sewed!)
I used polar fleece for the tail and underside, and sturdy green felt to make the scales (cutting them out and handsewing them all on was the WORST 😭)
Once.. assembled.. I fully stuffed the bottom section of the tail with Hobby Fill from Spotlight, and then gently stuffed the top section so that it was filled, but not completely stuffed - this was to make it lighter and ideally, nobody was seeing any part of the tail without scales on it 😉
I then cut out and sewed on all the scales with some real hodgepodge handsewing; again the plan was that the majority of the sewing is covered by the overlap of the scales themselves, so it doesn't have to be the neatest! Also make sure you check how high up the scales need to be to be comfortably covered by the dress.. I had to go back and add two rows after I thought I was finished :'))
I sewed velcro at the top of the tail to sort of folder over and provide a loop to stick a belt through.. this may not work if the tail is heavier, but it worked perfectly and didn't break or fall during the entire con!
It did take a solid chunk of time (good few months off and on 😬) but I'm super happy with how it turned out! I especially love how from the front you can't really see how thicc it is but if I turn even slightly it's like BAM ✨🐉
couple wip shots of the making of The Pitou Tail for OZCC - I really wanted to make sure the tail was as gravity-defying as possible, and with the help of a bracket, belt, and nylon fishing wire, that dream was realized as best as I could do it!
Essentially, I wrapped some 1cm eva foam dowels in wire, wrapped that in alternating layers of batting and duct tape, and then a final layer of wire, also attached to a zinc plated bracket. And then black bookbinding tape (no piccies of that alas!) Could it have been done in a less convoluted fashion? Probably!
I then shoved the bottom of the bracket through a little gap in the belt I had, cut a slit in my cosplay shirt (veeeerrrryyyyy grateful it wasn't the fraying type, but I secured a little buttonhole support type thing as well) and threaded it through. Lastly for that gravity-defying magic, I tied some nylon fishing wire around the top of the tail, and then around the hook&eye on the back of my jacket.
forgot about tsmoogs wip piccies whoops - definitely had a lotta fun with this one since it was mostly just altering stuff I already had! 😁
WIP pics of my Hanyuu horns, auauau! and a sneaky faux cream puff as well :>
My finished Hiyoko Saionji cosplay! Had a blast at Supanova and can't wait for SMASH!
WIP shots of my Hiyoko Saionji cosplay wig & bows, worn to Sydney Supanova 2021! I had a lot of help from my wonderful amazing sister 💖
