"If you take time to sit with the good things, they won't leave you so easily. Let's make the remembrance of good so deep and rich that even when life gives us a good shake we can still make out what is sweet and hopeful."
- Kathryn Nicolai, "Nothing Much Happens"
"The seriousness with which Tina's mind was taking her "anxiety disorder" and the extent to which she viewed it as a stable, personally meaningful thing, was the source of her stuckness and the only problem she had. It's like when you have a cold. If you knew you'd have some cold symptoms for two days, for example, I bet it wouldn't bother you much at all. It only when your mind chimes in with a story about how long it might last, how bad it might get and which plans it might interfere with, that you suffer. That's what minds do. They take fleeting experience and turn it into scary, personally relevant abstractions about you and your mind-made future [...] Her mind finds lots of evidence for her having anxiety, not because an anxiety disorder is sitting there waiting to be found, but because her mind is looking for it. Tina's mind had to generate thoughts about anxiety in order to look for them. It's like playing hide-and-seck with yourself— you're likely to find yourself when you're the hider and the seeker. Tina's feelings of stuckness were a mind-created experience kept alive by an innocent misunderstanding of how a mind works.
You can't be stuck. When you feel like you are, you're simply zoomed in on a repetitive, sticky, mind-made story. Feeling stuck is a gift reminding you to back up, soften your focus, and let new experience flow through."

"I'm in a 6:00 a.m. hot vinyasa class balanced in tree pose. I'm standing on my left leg with my right foot rooted into my left thigh. My arms are extended like branches overhead. I scan the room and immediately remember what a horrible idea that is. As soon as my eyes start moving, my body follows. My left leg and torso sway back and forth. I tighten my core and bring myself back into balance.
"Establish a drishti, a gazeless gaze toward something in the room that's not moving," the teacher tells the class. My eyes settle on a grain of white wood molding where the floor and wall meet, about seven feet in front of me. The instant my gaze settles into that spot, my body is steadier.
When we have something stable to look toward, it grounds us. We feel balanced and secure in tree pose and in life.
The understanding of who-we-are and how we work grounds us. It points toward an unmovable foundation-who-you-are at your unchanging essence is peace, love, and wisdom, full of resilience and health that can't be damaged or taken away. That consciousness, the energic essence of all things, is constant. It's like the blue sky that's always there beyond the weather.
This understanding also points toward what is forever moving and changing: everything else. Our psychological experience—our thoughts, feelings, and behaviors—are not pin-down-able. Like weather passing through, we couldn't hold on to it if we tried. When you stare at something that's moving, you get dizzy. You feel out of balance, unstable, insecure, and afraid.
In life, we're constantly staring at moving experience. We focus on our angry thoughts about the neighbor's tree on our prop-erty, that problem at work, the personal shortcomings we think we need to fix, and we get disoriented, stressed, and dizzy. We get knocked off-center. Rather than trying to focus on always-moving experience, your secure, stable foundation can be your drishti. The consciousness that is who-you-are is an unmovable truth on which you can rest. Place your gazeless gaze there, and it holds you as experience rises and falls through you.
Knowing that you have this healthy essence, that you are formlessness playing a game in form, allows you to explore, take chances, make mistakes, and fully feel everything there is to feel in life. It's like a child who has a secure attachment to safe, loving parents. The child is free to learn by experience because they have a secure foundation to which they can return. They can live more freely because they have a secure home base."

"Semrad taught us that most human suffering is related to love and loss and that the job is to help people acknowledge, experience, and bear the reality of life - with all its pleasures and heartbreak. The greatest sources of suffering are the lies we tell ourselves, he'd say, urging us to be honest with ourselves about every facet of our experience. He often said that people can never get better without knowing what they know and feeling what they feel. [...] Healing, he told us, depends on experiential knowledge: you can be fully in charge of your life only if you can acknowledge the reality of your body, in all its visceral dimensions."
- The Body Keeps Score by Bessel Van Der Kolk, M.D.
“No one is coming to save you.” I disagree ! I believe many people made up of many small moments come to save pieces of you , even if just briefly. The mentor who believed in you . The friend who said they’re proud of you. The family member that makes you laugh . The random person who held the door for you out of nothing but kindness. The teacher who took extra time to help you understand. The person who smiled at you when you walked into a store. The little kid who looks up to you. The person who randomly complimented you. Being “saved” isn’t about being whisked away and all your hardships gone, it’s about the people and things that remind you life is not all hardships, it is kindness, love, gentleness, softness, care, thoughtfulness. It is many moments made up of your lifetime that keeps you going and showing you the world is still beautiful, and will always be. Despite.
