How many trash bags have I filled?
For donation, for re-gifting, for re-homing, for recycling, for the actual trash?
At least 40 bags of clothes have been donated to charity, her wigs given away, her vanity wiped clean, keeping what I still could use, keeping her momentums, and the handwritten notes, keeping the memorabilia (to soon sell at a minimal price).
The task -- Going through the medicine cabinets, the bathroom cabinets, under the sink - today I was ruthless, tossing things that haven’t been used in YEARS, no more hanging on for what ifs... if it’s not used by now, it’s never going to be.
What do to with old perfume bottles with just an ounce of product left? What to do with her gauze pads? What to do with her cuticle tools? What to do with the products I know she loved and smells like her but I don’t use?
Re-organizing to make room for my things in the cabinet, to make more room in my space. To have a sense of orderliness in a house she governed for over 20 years and I’ve had to re-capture with my own eyes for the last 3. It is now functional for my way of life, not hers, because she is no longer here.
So yes, shift around the pieces of china, trash the old magazines, toss the my 5 year old’s journal from kindergarden that held my “today I was excited for” - because I took one picture of something cute and BAM... it was gone.... into the recycling to be repurpused as someone elses notebook.
_ I did 4 hours of cleaning today, started with my room with stripping my bed to have fresh sheets, cleaning the floor and the surfaces.
Then the bathrooms and kitchen floor, then the surfaces and doorknobs, and mirrors and polishing the wood. Then the organization bug hit and my task was set. I even took out all 8 shelves of my dad’s sheets and re-folded them and organized them by fitted sheet, top sheet, pillow cases, matching sets and duvet covers. Tossed more clutter and made 3 shelfs exposed for more of his stuff. Found old items and some that very much shocked me... I’m doing things at my pace to de-clutter, and organize this space.
Today’s garbage count was: 1 for donation, 3 for trash, 1 for recycling.... and adding that to the total it is.
