Erik Bosgraaf performs 'The First Lament of Ekavi' for 'Ganassi' recorder solo by Calliope Tsoupaki
'The First Lament of Ekavi', version for recorder solo by Erik Bosgraaf (2019) Live iPhone recording in the Kirche zum Heiligen Kreuz (Berlin), audio recorded by Dirk Fischer (http://fischerdirk.com/)
Calliope Tsoupaki (Piraeus, Greece, 1963) makes music that has a mood of timelessness. Her objective is expressing the essence as simply and clearly as possible. In her compositions she uses elements of early and contemporary music as well as the music of Greece and the Middle East. Combining these aspects, she skillfully creates a completely personal style.
Her music is praised for its melodic character, warm sound and emotional quality. To date her oeuvre consists of more than 100 works for diverse instrumentation and instruments from different cultures (qanun, ney, kemençe, hurdy gurdy, vielle, viola da gamba, pan flute), from solo to orchestral works, choral music, dance, theatre, opera and multi-sensory projects.

Francesco Rognoni: Variations on Palestrina's Vestiva I Colli; Rotem Gilbert, recorder
Francesco Rognoni's variations on Palestrina's Vestiva I Colli, performed by Rotem Gilbert, recorder, with Adaiha MacAdam-Somer, viola da gamba, and Katherine heater, baroque organ. HD video from the San Francisco Early Music Society Recorder workshop, July, 2015. For more information about SFEMS, please visit their website at http://sfems.org/ Francesco Rognoni is principally known for his extensive treatise on early 17th century ornamentation, but a small number of compositions survive. His variations follow the traditional renaissance plan of using the polyphonic framework of Palestrina's madrigal reduced to a sort of basso continuo in colla parte style, and he adds extensive divisions, or fast ornaments, to the soprano part. Ornamentation treatises in the renaissance and early baroque usually consist of a catalog of riffs that the player could adapt to slower moving notes; the best players could alter or recombine the stock formulas to create seamless compositions that maintain a feeling of improvisation.
East Green Spring by Maki Ishii (1936-2003)
Eastern philosophies express a shared idea of balance in the world. This can be created or disrupted by the interaction of the different energies of beings and non beings. The Bagua is an ancient representation used in Taoist cosmology where eight trigrams are used to express fundamental principles of reality. These symbols are associated with different elements that share a similar energy. In the later heaven sequence (present world) East, Green and Spring are all connected to the symbol Zhèn. Other connotations to this symbol are the Thunder, the Oldest Son and the meaning is associated with change, revolutions and taking action. The piece starts with a “folkish” beautiful melody, a stillness that could be elusive to the preceding symbol Gen, connected to the Northeast, Winter, Mountain and Snow. An interruption is introduced by a motive that grows each time it appears suggesting a developing change. A new section begins expressing a hectic movement of the beginning of Spring and the new life. This culminates in a loud and aggressive storm. In the end stillness returns with the gentle softness of the succeeding symbol Sun, connected to the Southeast, the end of Spring, Wind and the Oldest Daughter.
