lara jean’s always wanted to call him johnny, she practiced it in her head a few times, rolled it off her tongue too. she’d pace around her room too. when he finally gave her the okay to call him that via the letters she was more than happy to. although the timing was probably weird considering her and peter were dating. 

lara jean likes sharing books with john when they were kids, growing up. a common place where they read was the treehouse that they used to hang out. sometimes lara jean would sneak in snacks from her house like cookies so they could have something to eat while reading. 

when lara jean find holds john’s hand for the first time, it’s nerve-wrecking. it’s something she always wanted to do and it’s as warm as she imagined. she squeezes his hand a little tighter, gives him a smile, wondering if this feeling between them will last. because john does make her happy. he’s easy to be around and isn’t that what liking a guy is all about ?

     john had thought that college would be so much less confusing than high school, but with lara jean’s sudden appearance he wasn’t so sure anymore. but, he reminds himself, she’s probably still with peter and probably only wants to be friends. he’s fine with that; he always heard of boys complaining about being in the ‘friend zone’ and it had always kind of annoyed him… if it weren’t for their kiss and peter’s discomfort he might have wanted to remain friends with lara jean back in high school and he certainly wouldn’t have considered it a ‘punishment’. it would be an honor to be friends with lara jean covey. she was still cute, maybe even cuter, but he can handle a platonic relationship. she’s off limits, and his mom taught him to be respectful. god, he thinks, he really is the sundance kid. that thought alone makes him want to slam his head on his desk.       he laughs, eyes rolling playfully, “sure, but you’re definitely the minority in people who call me that.” her calling him ‘johnny’ definitely felt like they were more than friends, considering what he remembered from her letters to him, but he pretended not to care. “don’t let the big bad frat guys hear you call me that, though, i’d definitely gunning for an in.” he says, sarcasm dripping from his voice. his mom and dad would love for him to join a frat, but the whole scene really wasn’t up his alley. he wanted to make friends, but he didn’t want to have to go to busy and loud parties all the time to keep said friends.      “it’s a compliment.” he agrees, finishing up his muffin and crumpling up the wrapper. he’d try to throw it into the trash can, but he doesn’t think he can deal with missing the shot in front of lara jean – her boyfriend is going to school on a sports scholarship, after all. “oh yeah, i have another class after this and then i’m free for the rest of the day. i was going to go on a hunt for a good coffee shop around campus if you wanted to help.” 

              lara jean’s not really looking for anything right now, but this means TROUBLE because john is here. lara jean is cooking oil & john is the match, the sort of CHEMISTRY that’s bound to happen.  she really did wish they could have remained FRIENDS. she thinks about the time with him & stormy. it’s the type of dancing she thinks about in MOVIES. the game was stupid but she just wanted to prove that she could WIN something. she didn’t want genevieve winning, she always WINS. her wish couldn’t be any more simple, but even that SHOOTING STAR fell. a part of her wants to text peter, but she knows she should be doing what’s best for him too. she wanted to think about his future too so that’s why everything was becoming FRAGMENTED.  lara jean hasn’t even changed her phone’s wallpaper but she knows she should. ❝ let’s pass notes when class starts. ❞ 

          she smiles now considering she remembers their CORRESPONDENCE through the letters. he’d say he could call her that & it did feel awkward. it’s just some thing she thinks should ROLL off the tongue now. ❝ i like being in the minority. you did give me the okay.❞ she quips back, a good back & forth. john is her blast from the past, he’s one of the GHOSTS that visit scrooge. except he reminds her of how good he is, there’s a reminder that they could have been good together. there conversation is a WELCOME MAT, bringing her into the pull that john has on her. ❝ your secret is safe with me. you sound so enthusiastic about a fraternity.❞ it really didn’t scream john, but college is all about experimenting. she wonders if peter is in one right now.

        ❝ thanks. ❞  she rests her chin against her palm while talking to him. she thinks they have about five minutes left before their professor comes in. at least first weeks seemed to be EASIER. ❝ are you sure you aren’t following me ?❞ tomorrow’s schedule is a bit HEAVIER for her. lara jean perks up at the mention of a coffee shop & the chance to sit around & talk. ❝ i’d love to.you should always have a biscotti with coffee. it’s a perfect pairing. ❞ lara jean wonders if stormy is watching them & giving them her blessing.
