What do you think when you hear the word homeless?? Perhaps you assume this person would steal money. Perhaps you assume this person would do drugs and alcohol. Well, these stereotypes are far from the truth for Glen James. Recently, Glen James found a backpack with thousands of dollars in it. Instead of taking the money, Glen James tried to find the rightful owner so they could get their money back. As a token of thanks, James got a plaque, civil ceremony in Boston, and online donations for more than $100,000! Thus, Glen James breaks stereotypes.

What do you think when you hear the words secretary?? Uneducated? Middle class?  Well, this perception is far from the truth...

Before J.K. Rowling wrote her famous novels of Harry Potter, she was a secretary at the London office of Amnesty International. She got laid off from her secretary work, but she used her severance check to support herself in her venture into being an author.

Male Nurses

What is the first thing that you think of when the word "nurse" comes to mind?? Possibly female? People like Jerry Lucas are proud to be a male nurses! Lucas is also the founder of the Male Nurse Magazine. Lucas loves being a nurse and when people ask him the stereotypical question if he is just uses his nursing degree to eventually get into the medical field of a doctor, his answer is simple, NO! Lucas loves break stereotypes and he's proud of it. Jerry Lucas's story proves to show that you don't have to be famous to break a stereotypes, you just have to be yourself.

Marissa Mayer grew up in the midwest and graduated from Wausau High School in Wisconsin.  During high school she was selected by the governor as one out of the two people selected to attend the National Youth Science Camp in West Virginia.  After high school she attended Stanford University.  At the young age of 24 she got a job at Google to be the number 20 person in charge.  During the next 13 years she moved up the ladder at Google.  After 13 years of working at Google, she became the CEO of Yahoo.  Shortly after getting the new position, she and her husband announced they were expecting their first child.  After the birth of their baby she took a very short maternity leave before returning to her new job as CEO of yahoo. 

You probably would have thought that Marissa Mayer was a man because of her knowledge in science, her high position in a fortune 500 company, and for taking a very short maternity leave. Her position and accomplishments are paradigms that we associate with men.

The distorted view that beauty has to be big boobs and tiny waists is ridiculous and not healthy. Girls, empower yourself and don't allow yourself to be perceived as ugly, fat, or worthless because you don't look like a photoshopped supermodel. The stereotype that a woman must be thin to be beautiful is invalid and ridiculous. Be yourself and don't care about what others think of your body.

Danish-born physicist Lene Hau is an amazingly accomplished woman and physicist. In 1999, Hau and her team of Harvard scientists slowed a beam of light down to 60 km/hr (37 mph) and, in 2001, she was the first person in history to completely stop a beam of light and trap it in a Bose-Einstein condensate. Hau has given much of her life to working on advances in nanotechnology, physics, and quantum optics and has been recognized for also producing the lowest temperature ever achieved (part of creating a Bose-Einstein condensate)

Kate Middleton grew up in an upper middle class community.  She is the oldest child of 3 children.  She attended University of St. Andrews where she met her future husband, Prince William.  Middleton loves to bake and wanted to open a bakery, so baking party cakes can be easier for kids.  She named the bakery The Cake Kit Company.  Her longtime boyfriend and soon to be husband was stationed in the Royal Air Force.  Soon after, they celebrated their wedding with a party in the evening after the ceremony with only close family and friends. Once married, they started to rend a cottage in Anglessey.  To keep herself occupied, Middleton continues to do charity work while her husband is working in the Royal Air Force.  Currently Middleton and husband are expecting their first child.

You most likely thought that Kate Middleton could not marry a prince because of her class she grew up in.  Her strength and commitment is something that anyone can admire.

This new poster campaign is worth checking out. The folks behind Make Your Move Missoula have come up with a way to subvert the overused expressions that have become so prevalent in our victim-blaming culture, and instead make them positive messages. 

It’s a great way to encourage bystanders to take action against any sexual violence or harassment that they may witness, and especially effective in calling on men to not be complicit when they see someone being taken advantage of.

It’s always great to see people #RingTheBell on violence against women!

Just because someone sticks out from the crowd does not mean that he/she is an "error". And to anyone who feels the need to force yourself to be the same as everyone else...THERE IS SIMPLY NO NEED. People who don't want to be with you when you act like yourself are simply not worth having around. Although other people's perception of you might hurt sometimes, its important to learn how to move on and be yourself. You want the people around you to love YOU and not your persona.

Women do better on math tests when they fake their names

There’s a pernicious myth that says women aren’t as good at math as men. And disturbingly, reminding women of this stereotype just before they write a math test will have a detrimental affect on their performance. So what would happen if a woman could pretend to be someone else while writing the test?

Unsurprisingly, and as the title of this post already suggests, women do indeed perform better on math tests when they assume a name other than their own — and this happens regardless of whether they take a male or female name.

As a recent study by Shen Zhang has shown, using another person’s name is a kind of hack to overrule the self-reputational threat — the fear some women have of doing poorly when they’re concerned that it’ll be taken as proof of a stereotype. But removing this pressure seems to alleviate the fear and the distraction.

For the study, Zhang recruited 110 women and 72 men — all of them undergrads — and had them answer 30 multiple-choice math questions. Prior to the test, and in an effort to instill the stereotype threat, all participants were told that men typically outperform women at math. Some of the volunteers were told to write the test under their real name, but some were told to complete the test under one of four different aliases, either Jacob Tyler, Scott Lyons, Jessica Peterson, or Kaitlyn Woods.

When the results were in, men outperformed the women. Thank you, self-reputational threat.

But women who assumed an alias, whether it be male or female, performed better than the women who did not. And — importantly — they did just as well as the men.

"These findings suggest that women’s impaired math performance is often due to the threat of confirming a negative stereotype as being true of the self," conclude the researchers.

The researchers recommend the use of non-name identification procedures in testing, as well as coping strategies that “allow stigmatised individuals to disconnect their self from a threatening situation," which they say will disarm negative stereotypes.

Or, we could finally stop telling women that they suck at math. How’s that for a novel idea?

Ellen J. Kullman received a masters degree in management from Northwestern University which ultimately paved their career path. She began their career at General Electric. In 1988 she joined DuPont and was then appointed president and director of the company. Kullman was then the CEO of general motors in 2004-2008. Since 2009 this person has been the  CEO of DuPont earning a salary of $11 million.

You most likely would have thought Kullman was a man. Her high degree of success and involvement in with motors are paradigms that we associate with men.

Neil Patrick Harris began his acting career as a child and continued working in numerous roles. He has had great success on a popular TV show as a comedian. Harris also does a lot of charity work. He has a supportive long-term partner with whom he takes care of two children and they are now engaged to be married in their home state of California. They had a hard time conceiving children, so they had to use a surrogate mother. 

If you did not know the gender of this person...

You probably would have thought Neil Patrick Harris was female. Taking care of children, and supporting his partner are paradigms that we usually associate with women.

Angelina Jolie is an actor, film director, screen writer, author, and avid charity worker. She has received multiple awards such as the Academy Awards, Golden Globes, Emmys, and  Screen Actor Guild Awards. She  was named a United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees Goodwill Ambassador, and was then promoted to Special Envoy. She was an invited speaker at the World Economic Forum and she has founded the Education Partnership for Children of Conflict. Jolie has visited multiple countries during times of need, received multiple awards such as the Citizen of the World Award, and established multiple organizations.

If you did not know the gender of this person...

You probably would have thought that Angelina Jolie was a man. Her amazing accomplishments and devotion to charity are paradigms that we associate with men.
