It’s time we stop sexuallizing girls. What I wear shouldn’t
matter. It shouldn’t be distracting to boys because they
should know how to keep their eyes to themselves.
Schools are teaching boys that when a girl dresses in a
way that they don’t seem appropriate, then boys have
every right to gawk and stare at them. Girls have lost the
right to wear what we feel is comfortable because schools
have taught the boys that touching us is fine because
what we wear “draws attention”. Why do we blame a girl
when she gets sexually harassed? Shouldn’t those boys
know not to lay their hands on a girl in a way that makes
them feel uncomfortable. They don’t because it comes
back to the schools not teaching them that their behaviour
is inappropriate but instead attacking the girls. If a girl
gets raped she doesn’t deserve it, nor was she asking for
it no matter how she was dressed. If she dresses a certain
way it doesn’t give a boy the right to rape her and scar her
for life. Shouldn’t he know to keep his hands to himself. It
all stems back to that mentality that schools place in our
minds that it’s their job to keep their hands and eyes to
themselves. We shouldn’t be teaching girls how to dress,
we should be teaching boys not to rape.
