During Dutch Design Week in 2016, Taiwanese designer Yi-Fei Chen presented her project named ‘Tear Gun’ that collects and freezes actual tears to shoot them back at the person who caused the cry.

Julian Charrière

Julian Charrière’s photographic series Polygon reveals the U.S.S.R.’s nuclear test site, Semipalatinsk, as a post-apocalyptic and violently melancholic site: a shrine for a ruined future. Using black-and-white analogue, medium-format film to capture the remaining vestiges of the test site, he successfully records the architectural legacy of the birth of the atomic age. The monolithic buildings tower over the rolling hills with the same menacing impact of watchtowers, fully guarded. Before each photograph was developed, thermonuclear strata was scattered on the negative, creating light spots showing the unseen forces which continually act on the landscape pictured. This effect which radioactivity renders on film was first discovered in 1896 by French physicist Henri Becquerel when storing photographic negatives and uranium salts in the same dark drawer. Exposing the film stock to radioactive material destroys one mode of visual information while at the same time adding another. The result is a doubly synthetic topography. The energy of the past infects the present, and will continue to warp the future. Semipalatinsk is future fossil space.

“Particulate Matter”, also known as Particle Pollution, is a complex mixture of extremely small particles and liquid droplets. Particle pollution is made up of a number of components, including acids, organic chemicals, metals and soil or dust particles. The series Particulate Matter deals with the relationship between revival and decline and reflects the consequences that come along with excessive economic growth and the combustion of carbon-based fuels. The work calls attention to air pollution and shows Chinese cities disappearing in pollution. Scientific studies have shown that many cities in China but also other cities around the world have become unsafe for human habitation. Air pollution has become too concentrated and too dangerous. A recent report from the World Health Organization shows that air pollution kills 7 million people per year and is now the world’s largest single environmental health risk.   The series Particulate Matter addresses an alarming degree of air pollution caused by human acts and exemplifies continuing human disturbance to the environment. The work reveals a political economic system that defies all limits. It willingly submits our lives as well as the beauty and wealth of the earth to the mere exploitation of resources and the greed for profit.   The images are mainly photographed from elevated vantage points, emphasizing the reduced visibility in a diminished toxic space. Their seemingly deceptive romantic aesthetics disclose their true meaning by the titles of the respective images. The titles of the images refer to the AQI (Air Quality Index), indicating the degree of air pollution. — Benedikt Partenheimer

Energy Gallery, The Science Museum, London, 2004 This project is a Critical Design experiment commissioned by the Science Museum exploring different energy futures. The gallery is aimed at children aged between 7 and 14. We chose to design a collection of hypothetical products to explore the ethical, cultural and social impact of different energy futures. Photographic scenarios were used to communicate a set of values driven by social as well as technological changes – value fictions rather than science fictions. The scenarios include: domestic hydrogen production and child labour with specially designed family uniforms and corporate logos; bio-fuel created from human waste; and meat-based microbial fuel cells. Each scenario is based on a real technology and simply asks what would happen if this became the main form of energy in the not too distant future. Monsanto: A Photographic Investigation by Mathieu Asselin

Monsanto®’s dozens of Superfund sites (large contaminated sites of hight priority for the US Environmental Protection Agency) across the United States alone are affecting hundreds of communities and their environment with terrifying health and ecological consequences. Monsanto® maintains strong ties with the US- government, and especially with the FDA (United States Food and Drugs Administration). It is a bed-fellow with many other economical and political power houses around the world. The company engages in campaigns of misinformation, the persecution of institutions and individuals, including scientists, farmers and activists that dare to disclose their crimes. Monsanto® is spreading new technologies and products, while scientists, ecological institutions and human rights organization are putting out alerts for issues like public health, food safety and ecological sustainability – issues on which our future on this planet depends. This is all particularly troublesome since Monsanto® is entering a new chapter of disregard for our planet through the creation and commercialization of GMOs.

Visiting its past and presents, this project aims to picture what Monsanto®’s near future will look like.
