The house was too quiet.

You stepped through the front door, still shrugging off your work bag, and the silence hit you like a wall. Usually, by this hour, there was noise—the clatter of Tony tinkering in his workshop, the hum of FRIDAY’s voice, the distant laughter of your son chasing one of the bots. But today, nothing. Just the soft tick of the grandfather clock in the foyer and the faint whisper of the air conditioning.

Your heart lurched. It had been weeks—long, draining weeks—of Tony pulling away. Not just from you, but from Theo too. He’d come home late, leave early, bury himself in the lab with excuses about "Avengers stuff." You’d told yourself it would pass. It always did, didn’t it? His moods came in waves, crashing against the shores of his conscience before receding again.

But this time felt different. This time, the distance had a weight to it. A sorrow.

You dropped your bag by the stairs and moved through the ground floor quickly, checking the kitchen, the living room, the den. Empty. Even the coffee mugs in the sink were from this morning, untouched since. A cold knot tightened in your stomach.

Where are they?

You remembered Theo’s orange bathing suit draped over the towel rack this morning. He’d been begging to use the pool, but you’d told him to wait for Daddy. And Tony had just… left for work without a word.

Your feet carried you up the stairs, then down the hallway toward the master bedroom. The balcony doors were wide open, letting in the warm evening breeze. And there—finally—you saw them.

Your breath caught.

On the large beach seat you’d bought last summer, the one with the thick white cushions and the wide canopy, Tony was curled up with Theo. Your son was wrapped in that bright orange bathing suit you’d thought he’d never get to wear today, his small body tucked against Tony’s chest. Tony’s arm was wrapped around him, his hand splayed protectively over Theo’s back. They were both facing the ocean, the golden light of the setting sun painting their silhouettes in soft amber.

Tony’s head was bowed, his forehead resting against Theo’s hair. You could see his shoulders rise and fall in slow, measured breaths. He wasn’t asleep. He was holding on.

You stood frozen in the doorway, tears pricking at your eyes. This was what you’d been missing. This was the man you loved, the father you knew he could be. But you also saw the tension in his jaw, the way his fingers clutched the fabric of Theo’s suit like he was afraid to let go.

You didn’t interrupt. You just watched, your hand pressed over your mouth, until the light shifted and Tony finally stirred. He murmured something to Theo, who nodded sleepily, and then they both stood. Tony lifted your son easily, cradling him against his chest, and turned to come inside.

When he saw you, his eyes widened for a fraction of a second. Then a shadow of guilt passed over his face. He managed a thin, tired smile.

“Hey, honey,” he said softly. “Didn’t hear you come in.”

You stepped aside as he carried Theo toward his bedroom. “I just got home. I was looking for you two.”

“We were just… having some air,” Tony said, his voice rough. He laid Theo down on his bed, pulling the covers up over the little boy’s still-damp suit. Theo was already half-asleep, his fingers curling around the edge of the blanket.

Tony stood there for a long moment, staring down at your son. His hand hovered over Theo’s head, trembling slightly, before he finally pulled it back. He turned and walked past you, his steps heavy.

You followed him into the kitchen. The silence stretched like a rubber band about to snap.

You moved on autopilot—filling the kettle, pulling down two mugs, scooping coffee grounds into the French press. The familiar ritual helped steady your nerves. Tony leaned against the counter, arms crossed, watching you with that same hollow look he’d worn for weeks.

When the coffee was ready, you poured two cups, set one in front of him, and wrapped your own fingers around the warmth of the mug. You didn’t drink. You just stood there, looking at him.

Then you set your mug down and reached out.

“Tony,” you said quietly. “Hold my hand. Please. I need it.”

He flinched. For a moment, you thought he’d refuse. But then his hand lifted, and his fingers intertwined with yours. They were cold, rough with calluses from years of metal and machinery. But they held yours like a lifeline.

“I’m sorry, love,” he whispered. “I know I’ve been unfair. I know you see it. You always see it.”

You squeezed his hand. “I know you’re going through something. But you can’t shut us out. Not me, not Theo. We’re your family.”

He let out a shaky exhale. “You’re right. You’re always right.”

You guided him to the living room couch, both of you sitting down with your knees touching. You kept his hand in yours, thumb stroking over his knuckles.

“Tell me,” you said. “What happened?”

He stared at your joined hands for a long time. When he finally spoke, his voice was barely above a whisper.

“I almost hurt him.”

Your blood ran cold. “What? When?”

“A week ago. In the lab.” He swallowed hard. “I was testing a new gauntlet prototype. I don’t even remember what I was trying to do—some impulse repulsor modification. Theo came in to show me a drawing he made. He was so proud of it. A picture of our family.” Tony’s voice cracked. “I was distracted. I didn’t see him reach for the table. The gauntlet discharged. Missed him by inches. The blast hit the wall behind him.”

You felt your own hand tremble. “Tony…”

“He didn’t even realize. He thought it was a sound effect. Laughed it off.” Tony’s jaw clenched. “But I saw it. I saw how close I came to—to hurting my own son. Because I wasn’t paying attention. Because I let my work blind me.”

He pulled his hand from yours, rubbing his face with both palms. “I’ve been over it a thousand times. What if he had been three inches to the left? What if I hadn’t pulled back in time? What if, what if, what if…”

You reached out and gently pulled his hands away from his face. “Tony, look at me.”

He did. His eyes were red-rimmed, glistening.

“You did pull back,” you said firmly. “You didn’t hurt him. You caught yourself. You’ve spent your whole life building things that could destroy, and every single time, you choose not to. You choose us.”

“But what if I don’t next time?” His voice was raw. “What if I’m not fast enough? I’m not a good man, Y/N. I’ve done terrible things. I have a list of sins longer than my bank account. And Theo—he’s so small. So innocent. He looks at me like I’m a hero. He doesn’t know. He doesn’t know what I really am.”

You moved closer, cupping his face in your hands. “He knows you’re his father. That’s all he needs to know. And you are a good man, Tony. Not perfect. None of us are. But you love him. You love me. That’s what matters.”

He let out a shuddering breath. “I’m scared.”

“I know.” You pressed your forehead against his. “But you don’t have to carry it alone. Let me help. Let me be your anchor.”

For a long moment, he just breathed with you, his hands coming up to rest on your waist. Then he tilted his head and kissed you—soft, slow, desperate. A kiss that tasted of salt and apology.

You kissed him back, pouring every ounce of reassurance you had into it. When you finally parted, you were both trembling.

“You’re not going to hurt him,” you whispered. “Because you’ll be careful. You’ll be present. And when you feel that fear creeping in, you’ll come to me. We’ll handle it together.”

He nodded, his thumb tracing your cheek. “I love you. I love him. I don’t know how to say it right.

“You just did.”

You stayed like that, wrapped in each other, until the coffee grew cold and the stars came out beyond the balcony. Then you stood, took his hand again, and led him back to Theo’s room.

The little boy was sprawled on his bed, still in his orange bathing suit, one arm flung over his head. His lips were parted in a peaceful sleep.

Tony knelt beside the bed, and you saw the change in his face—the tight lines softening, the fear giving way to something gentler. He pressed a kiss to Theo’s forehead, then to his tiny hand.

“I’ll be better,” he murmured. “I promise.”

A Warrior's Bet

Rating: PG14

Summary: Thor and Fandral don't believe the fact that Loki could get any woman in bed without the use of booze nor coin. So he's bet to bed a woman to prove it, and Loki knows just the person to pick..

‘’If you continuously roll your eyes like that, you’re guaranteed to give yourself a headache. Come now Loki, if you’re that bored, then join us!” Fandral encouraged, emerging from the dark hallway and back to his companions- Thor and Loki who waited lounging on the pillow covered couches.

Loki’s nose scrunched, taking in the warrior’s appearance for the third time in a row. His clothes were sloppily put back on, clearly having high expectations to just remove them again while the scent of sex steamed from his body the closer he got. Loki wasted no time in standing up- making it seem like he was giving up his seat to him to be placed right next to Thor- who shared the same dissolved predicament.

‘’I have no intention of joining you, nor any other options in the matter. It's near dawn- are the two of you finished yet?” Loki grumbled, crossing his arms in his clearly bored and tired state while slumping into a loveseat across from them. 

‘’I think my brother merely prefers the male flesh rather than the pleasures of women.’’ Thor jested, chuckling rather loudly while he took another gulp of his mead- complimentary to any royals of Asgard.

‘’I would assume you are referring to his hand?” Fandral joked back, grabbing at his own cup while the two of them continued laughing and cheering, making Loki sigh in frustration.

He never wanted to be here, and regretted not slipping away the moment the two entered their paid chambers, but somehow they would have found a way to drag him back- just how they had by getting here in the first place. 

‘’Man or woman, it matters not to me. I just think one shouldn't have to pay to gain pleasure. It’s degrading and low.’’ Loki noted, brushing away the idiocracy while his eyes ventured around the room for the thousandth time, almost as if just to confirm his point of the equally loathsome environment. 

Asgard’s brothels were, by far, the finest in the nine realms. The most attractive women worked here and the establishment itself made it a point to remain clean and roomy. Every corner had its alluring shadows while every inch either had the smell of booze, sex or perfume. That all didn't matter to Loki. If a woman- or man- were truly interested in sharing pleasures of the flesh, then both should mutually agree to do just that- paying one merely felt like one might as well use their own hand if they wished for false feelings and fake attraction. 

‘’So how exactly do you bed those women at our feasts? Surely all of them had been under intoxication brother.’’ Thor laughed, mildly jesting while also being genuinely curious whenever Loki seemed to disappear with a partner every feast night before him. His jealousy made Loki’s lips curl up and the god of thunder merely rolled his eyes and took another gulp of his drink. 

‘’Brother, you forget that my silver tongue has many ways to hold its title.’’ Loki grinned, holding his arms out while gesturing to himself. ‘’I need not offer assistance of any kind to bed anyone- I ask, and they follow. Willingly.’’ His eyes narrowed while glancing towards Fandral, watching how he cleared his throat and waved a hand at him.

‘’So are you proposing that the trickster could bed one for free? With no help or offers from booze or coin?”

Loki smirked, resting his chin in the palm of his hand while leaning himself against the arm of the chair. ‘’I am proposing just that, my friend. And have.’’

Fandral scoffed and glanced over at Thor to gain some type of assistance here but Thor merely looked convinced while scratching at his beard. ‘’Alright brother, why not prove it?”

Loki snorted and raised a brow. ‘’Are you wishing to watch?”

Fandrol smirked and shifted in his seat. ‘’It’s happened before.’’

‘’I am referring to a one on one transaction Loki.’’ Thor nudged Fandral to contain himself before nodding towards his brother. ‘’Bed a woman with the claims you have proposed, and we shall give you the benefit of a doubt.’’

‘’I suppose there shall be nothing in return if I win such a challenge? If you could truly call it that..” Loki smirked, already getting to his feet and stretching while Fandral did the same and looked towards the hallways with his hand in his pocket.

‘’What is it you want?” Thor chuckled, crossing his arms while Fandral looked over how much coins he had left for perhaps another round.

Loki narrowed his eyes while he straightened his posture, half flashing his glance towards the blond warrior before turning all his attention towards his brother- whether he was sober or not to take things seriously. ‘’I wish not to be challenged again when it comes to pleasures within the sheets. Nor jests. Learn to accept that perhaps I am but simply.. Better than you, here.’’

Thor chuckled and waved a hand towards the exit. ‘’Done, goodluck brother,’’ he shook his head, hardly having any worry upon losing.. He was Thor after all! ‘’Happy hunting.’’

Fandral smirked and glanced back at the two princes, already having made his way towards his next room. ‘’Who knows Loki, perhaps you just might have the power to make an honest woman of her.’’

Loki smirked, his eyes narrowing at them both with hardly any worry. ‘’Perhaps I might.’’

Y/N hummed while she carried the basket of folded sheets, pace hardly slowing in hopes to get done sooner rather than later. By all means, she was no experienced maid Asgard’s palaces held to high standards but in her free time, she often liked to help them out when she could.

She was often looked down upon by the other nobles, being that she was one herself and by aiding those of a lower class was just simply.. Not done. She didn't care, she would rather be doing this type of work than be sat for hours in boring court meetings or gossipying with teacups. 

She finally got to the laundry room and exhaled out her mild exhaustion before bending to set down the heavy basket. This would do for now, not wanting to overdo anything and start a rumor that the maids were simply not good enough where they required extra assistance, because that also was definitely not the case. 

Wiping her brow, she wished her corset wasn't so tight today and stood up, her back immediately being pressed up against a solid chest before a pair of slender hands came into view and covered her eyes. 

Her panic only lasted a heart beat, familiar with the scent and touch already of whom she had been having secret relations with and her smile showed she was happy for his return. 

‘’Will there ever be a day where I'll finally find you in the tearoom?” Loki chuckled, having no surprise by finding her busy with her little hobby. 

‘’I don’t even like tea,’’ she laughed, her hands coming up to rest on the prince’s wrists but made no effort to pull his hands away. ‘’You were gone longer than expected.’’

‘’An unfortunate event i had no leaveway on or i would have perhaps made it back to slip right into your sheets with you.’’ She could hear Loki’s smirk in his words while he whispered against her ear, somehow pressing himself much closer to her from behind before she laughed and pulled down his hands finally, turning to face him.

‘’Well, if you have nothing else to occupy your day.. We could always pick up where we left off yesterday..’’ she purred, biting her bottom lip with a tiny bit of shyness to her seduction while Loki’s hands came to her hips and pulled her against him.

‘’I was hoping to get back.. Into it..’’ he winked, the use of his innuendo seemed to have the tone of mild hesitation, followed by his single twitch to the corner of his mouth, making Y/N raise her brow and nod at him.

‘’What is it?”

Loki tilted his head. ‘’What’s wrong darling?”

She gave him a look and gently rested her hands on his chest, fingers unconsciously tracing the lines of his armor while she encouraged him. ‘’Theres something on your mind..’’

‘’There’s always something on everyone's mind.’’ Loki grinned.

‘’Loki.’’

Loki sighed and his shoulders dropped just a little, giving in while his hands began to encircle her waist, eyes beginning to drift distractedly at her form while his mouth searched for the proper words. ‘’I.. Wish to ask a favor..’’

Y/N’s brows raised with her posture straightening, almost ready for the mysterious task with the nod of her head. ‘’Yes of course.. What is it?”

Loki hesitated. ‘’I don’t think you’ll necessarily.. Like it.. Or at least, the reason behind it..’’

Now she really looked confused and took a step back to assess him, feeling him let her go before his hands clasped behind his back, most likely to stop his fingers from fiddling while he shifted in place.

‘’..i don’t understand..’’

Loki drew in a breath and raised his eyes, searching how exactly he should put things into words- even if it was his entire mission the whole ride back to the palace; and still he was having difficulty. ‘’Thor and Fandral have challenged me..’’

Y/N nodded slowly as she listened, almost expecting him to then say he would be challenged to fight them- but the lack of the weaponry room would have given that away while they stood facing each other.

‘’They refuse to believe the fact that women enter my chambers willingly.. Without the aid of booze and coin and.. Have demanded i prove that i can..’’

She raised her brows immediately, almost taking a pause to grant him the opportunity to tell her this was all a joke. When enough silence stretched and his eyes took a risk of granting hers, she almost laughed it off. ‘’Loki.. It's no one's business what you do, especially when it comes to the bedroom, you have nothing to prove-’’ by his indifferent look, she almost gave him a dry one. ‘’You wish to beat Thor.’’

‘’Well..’’ he said sheepishly. ‘’Fandral is in it as well, they have granted me the reward of ceasing their jests indefinitely if I succeed.’’

She laughed and shook her head, turning away from him as if they were moving on from this conversation. ‘’This is absurd,.. We already bed each other without the exchange of anything but love and affection.. What is it you wish me to do?”

Loki shook his head and drew near, taking her hands in his gently so she could face him again. ‘’We but carry on how we have been, where i seek you out within any free time of my day and..’’ his voice grew purposefully seductive when noticing her lack of eye contact and reddened cheeks. ‘’Thoroughly satisfy our needs.’’ 

Y/N cleared her through from her flusteredness and looked up at him. ‘’You could have carried on this plan of yours without telling me..’’

‘’True, but I wish not to lie about what's behind my affections. You know I care for you, every time we’re together. If there was just the smallest of hints within suspicious of trying to get you into my bed sooner, I would have felt immense guilt.’’

Y/N looked up at him in astonishment, grateful that he never wished to lie and was upfront and honest with his intentions.. Even if they’ve bed each other non  stop each day for the past few years. 

‘’If sleeping with me is all that you’ve wished to do to accomplish this, I couldn't say no.’’ Now it was her turn to smile at him seductively, always easily falling for his touch in the first place and with his emotions being as true as they were, made her want him all the more.

Loki smiled down at her and wrapped his arms around her waist once more, bringing her closer before he bent down to capture her lips. He felt his body instantly melt, feeling the complete and honest love towards her after having been surrounded by the women he had to tolerate amongst his presence earlier. He could respect the reason for work, but he’s never sought out the touch of another since he’s met Y/N. The outside world only believed he has, due to perhaps his mischievous reputation to uphold. Nevertheless , in the past even his statement grew true. No coin, booze nor lies has ever been needed.

Y/N felt the growing smile from him against her lips and she pulled back a little, sharing his smile with curious eyes up at him. ‘’What's so funny?’’

‘’Well.. Before I departed to make my way on carrying out this little bet.. They made the jest that i might find someone where i could make an honest woman out of them..’’ Loki grinned and his heart jumped upon seeing the light in her eyes.

‘’You threaten to make an honest woman of me?” she teased, hands cupping his cheeks gently while he grinned down at her. 

‘’Well.. I’d be a liar if I didn't tell you that had been my intent later on.. And perhaps this bet ahas granted us a perfect opportunity to present our relationship publicly..’’

His voice grew quiet as if considering the slightest chance she might say now- maybe growing accustomed to the thrill of sneaking around. Not to mention, publicly being courted by a prince of Asgard- perhaps even king on day, would change both their lives drastically. 

She smiled up at him, tears pricking her eyes while her heart raced. ‘’The only being I'd wish to take on such a life would only be with you Loki..’’ 

Her answer made his own heart race- he hardly noticed while he had already bent down to scoop her up, hands greedily cupping her ass while bringing her high up against him. This time she had to bend herself to kiss him, but the two let nothing stop them before clothes began getting pulled off and bodies thumping into different furniture with the echoes of ecstasy of two lovers becoming one.

Again. And again. And again..

Fandral’s cheeks reddened upon making eye contact with Thor, neither of them having said a word while the sounds of banging and moans echoed throughout the halls somehow through a closed door.

‘’Well.. It would seem that our trickster has done it..’’ he said awkwardly, rubbing the back of his neck while Thor ran a hand down his face.

‘’When he’s done he’s going to want to say I told you so..’’ he groaned.

‘’You got some time, he’s been here for ours.’’ Fandral shook his head and glanced at the door, raising a brow with the shake of his head. ‘’And by the sound of it, it looks like he just might be making an honest woman out of her.’’

Thor looked over at him and furrowed his brows. ‘’How could you tell?” 

The warrior's blush deepened with almost a sheepish look on his face. Taking up his walk again, Thor soon followed with the attention for an answer.

‘’Well.. Lets just say, I've never heard him moan like that before..’’

Your hands shook as you searched the floor for your dress, wrapped in the fur you’d dragged from the foot of Loki’s bed. Behind you, the sheets shifted.

“Come back to bed.”

His voice was still low from sleep.

You didn’t turn around. “No.”

Loki sat up, dark hair falling loose over his shoulders. “No?”

“I can’t keep doing this.”

The words came out too quiet. You heard him move behind you, bare feet meeting cold stone before he reached for his trousers.

“This?” he replied carefully.

“Yes, this.” You finally faced him, clutching the useless scrap of silk to your chest trying to dress “Being secret. Like I don’t think of how you touch me when I’m near you..”

His expression closed, eyes cold.  

You laughed, brittle  “What am I supposed to do, Loki? When they say your name, I just act confused?”

“Do not be dramatic.”

“I’m being stupid.” Your eyes burned. “That’s what this is. Stupid. Everyone knows. They look at me like I’m..they know.”

“You are not leaving.”

He stood between you and the door now, half-dressed, beautiful and furious.

“You don’t get to decide that.”

His jaw flexed. “Apparently I decide very little where you are concerned.”

“If you want a whore, then pay for one.” You hissed, wounded.  

His eyes flashed, sharp enough to cut.  “Careful.”

“No.” Your voice broke. “You be careful. You don’t get to make me feel like your whore and then act insulted when I name it.”

Silence fell.

Loki swallowed once. You watch him shift.. walls going up, armour dragged across an open wound you’d caused.

“I am your prince,” each word too cold to be natural. “Get back into bed.”

You saw that he hated himself for saying it.

But he’d said it all the same.

Nothing about connecting with the natural ebb and flow of the galaxy was simple, at least when there was much more to consider besides how it felt to be swallowed whole by the feelings you’d fought for so long to suppress. At least you could rely on what you felt because it was contained within the same vessel which housed your spirit and for that were you at least somewhat grateful. The difficulty came with having to dissect your own heart—you knew what you wanted deep down, but it was more convenient, simpler, to pretend that you did not. 

Now, you had more to answer for than just your emotions; you had bound yourself to a man who was far more complicated than what you chose not to acknowledge within yourself. There was more weight to him than there appeared because Obi-Wan Kenobi was unassuming on a good day and on others, well, he was just as unprepared to face facts as you were. 

You had admired him from afar, a model Jedi, an upstanding gentleman in every regard, but that was more reverence than you should’ve put on camaraderie, a thing as delicate as dewy velvet petals that should’ve meant no more than blades of grass beneath your boots—a dime a dozen, and expendable if it came down to it. 

You took turns sweeping it under the rug, one wave of a hand (and you’d swear that it was more than the power of suggestion) and all your worries withered away that this was budding into something more beautiful than it was ever meant to be. In a past life, you thought you must’ve been a gardener, because you’d tended to your relationship with him with such devotion that it was no wonder it had grown out of proportion. There was power in that, but also sweetness, a tenderness that required cupped hands around his fragile heart so that it didn’t break in the same way as when another held it so carelessly it cracked where their fingers has pressed in. 

Obi-Wan had been shattered into the man you knew him as now, and that was yet another reason why you’d chosen the high road; things changed, that much you could count on, but what lingered between you like smoke and shadow didn’t have to. 

You sat cross-legged on your floor, head bent in meditation as you retreated inward, daring to let yourself breathe in the fresh air you imagined your lungs expanding with. In your mind, you were free to believe you could go anywhere you wanted, your bare feet leaving imprints in the grass as you wandered the fields of endless thought. Your shields were up; there wasn’t any chance he could reach you out here, this far from everything you wanted to know just as well as this. A part of you did not want him to tread the spot beside you, knowing that if you relented, slackening that line just a little, there was the very real possibility that you’d relinquish your control entirely, but was there anyone more deserving of your entire self than him?

You were uncertain, but it seemed that perhaps your heart already knew. 

A gentle knock at the door pulled you from your meditative reflection, but the wave of relaxed reassurance from the Force submerged you and the heaviness of your limbs was a welcomed familiarity as you lifted one arm to guide the door open with a simple flick of the wrist. 

“Is that how you greet all your superiors?”

Obi-Wan spoke in deadpan and for a split-second you thought he was serious, until a grin thinned his lips and the hint of color tinted his complexion, “relax, darling, I was only teasing you. Of course, at the next Council meeting, I will have no choice but to address your unprofessional conduct, and your amateurish use of the Force.”

“Is that so?” you smirked at him, remaining seated as you were before he’d entered your chambers, “well, then I’ll just have to tell them you have no respect for my meditation processes and how you’ve so rudely interrupted me in the middle of it with nothing of any great importance.” 

Obi-Wan lowered his head, feigning regret, “perhaps you’re well within your rights to make your complaints against me, however, it is a Jedi’s responsibility to center themselves in the moment, even when distractions arise. Are you insinuating that you struggle with this, even after having been recently Knighted?” 

He thought he had you right where he wanted you, until you delivered the death blow, “I think there is plenty you struggle with as well, Master Kenobi. It seems to me that even Jedi Masters do not always feel a pull of honesty in expressing how they feel.”

Even as Obi-Wan’s body went rigid, you pondered what it might look like to explain to him how that made you feel, and every little fissure in your heart caused by the cracks in your façade would open up and your truth would come spilling out of you like the ooze of red blood from an open wound. You wanted to tell him that you felt him embedded within you the same as you were a part of the Force, and that no matter how much you tried to rid yourself of him it felt like shedding blood; you needed him to survive. 

You sat still, lost to the whim of speaking your mind but only within the safety of it happening there and not out here, because here between you, anything could happen…except for what you needed. 

“Yes, well,” Obi-Wan’s response was sharper than you’d anticipated, but you could almost hear the plaintive edge to his words and there was a part of you that chose to believe you were not imagining it, “I think there is something to be said for that, at least I am not foolish enough to believe that any Jedi has mastered every aspect of human connection and the ambiguities of all living beings. Some ideals are just better taught by example.”

It wasn’t easy to listen to him speak in such uncertain, clinical terms, but it would have made you far more uneasy to hear the opposite come from him. This was the version of Obi-Wan that you knew and it had left such a lasting impression that you had become bonded to him in a way that few others had the privilege of being. It made your chest tighten just thinking about it, because this was perhaps the closest either of you would ever get to admitting that something even stronger had been cultivated between you, tendrils twisting deeply within your souls, tethering you to each other in a flowering string of fate. 

You nodded as you swiped a strand of hair behind your ear, “that is very true, Obi,” you saw a flicker of a distant emotion in his eyes at the sound of the nickname you so fondly, and frequently, referred to him as, “you’ve always been wise beyond your years, especially about things of that nature.” 

He nodded in respectful acknowledgement, but when he spoke again, the change of subject was not a displeasure, “in all honesty, I came in here to check on you. I haven’t been able to reach you all day and I wanted to be sure you were alright.”

“I’m fine,” no words had even been more untrue, “you’re welcome to meditate with me, if you’d like? I know you typically wind down for the evening differently, but…you’re here so, I thought I might as well extend the offer.”

“A half-hearted offer is technically still an offer,” Obi-Wan quipped as he walked over and sat down beside you on the floor, his arm briefly brushing against yours as he got comfortable, “thank you. I suppose I should at least try to clear my mind a bit.”

You gave him a playful nudge, “always with the teasing. Some things are better left unsaid, Obi-Wan.”

Both of you were painfully aware of how much truth was hidden in those words. 

The only thing more agonizing was that the only man you could see yourself growing old with, the one who had kissed your heart and turned the blood in your veins the color of his love, was sitting just shy of your right elbow and there was both nothing, and everything, stopping you from pulling him in and letting him know. 

You silently wondered if he could feel it as strongly as you did.
