it's finally here!!! simon's resurrection (reprise)

i worked on it for so long that i just had to stop at some point. there are still things i'd like to fix and change, but it's time to keep it moving

my perception of her lab is heavily influenced by the autopsy of jane doe movie. it really stuck with me for some reason, maybe the witch reminding me of emily

Emily resurrects Simon after his untimely passing. Raising the dead isn't anything new for her, but this time, she needs to bring him back right. Not just reanimate his body to walk the earth again, functioning only as a drone to its creator's command. She's accomplished something others have tried and failed to: truly bring someone back from death, with their spirit intact. The entry points are the brain and the heart - one for Simon, and one for his body. Emily takes great care in the condition of his face, perfect, like a porcelain doll, unlike the rest of his shattered body. She has created him again, damn the consequences.

decided to colorpick some references i liked. with simon's lighter skin, it was easy to add blushing and do all my shadow work on my usual layer, but i had to find a way to do that for emily without ending up looking like a grayed out anime skintone. afterwards i found my own shortcut to match how i typically stylize skin, so i didnt keep it like this. i think i'd like to one day, though

the whole thing has me rethinking how i do rendering in general, with my light and shadow layer system. it was something i started doing that really elevated my art when i didn't know how else to do it. think im growing out of that shortcut - like with their original designs, i was avoiding the parts i need to practice on. much to consider 🤔📝

i recently buckled and upgraded to the csp subscription to get the newest version. i was working on 2.0 before. idk if i really need it, but i sure love suped up art programs 😍🤩

anyways, today's lesson on "using references isn't cheating" - i always struggle with backs and posing some models on top of the piece helped me find out exactly what i was missing... funny how that works 🤔😅

hitting up one of my favorite pieces to apply the new designs to 😈 this time around, i think the scene will have much more clarity. also plan to add Emily's lab as the background

!! huge update !!

I'm reworking the comic to feature an all-human (ish) cast. Turns out it does wonders for the story and the process of working on it. I created these characters back when it was out of my skill set to make humans that looked different from one another, so I compensated with non-human features and colors to make them stand out. Their original designs are classic, but these ones will deliver the story much more clearly. Their supernatural qualities are no longer explained by species, but by world-consistent plot ✨

i was inspired by an old sketch page of emily's cursed soul. second version is with her soul-clenching headlights that i removed for the main version to preserve face detail. i really like how the colors turned out with no lineart 🤫
