I heard about the Teen Titans event going on right now and how people are clowning on Dick for notifying Fairplay’s father (Mister Terrific) about what they’re doing, saying he’s being a snitch and a hypocrite.

One: that’s funny as hell.

Two: actually, Dick isn’t being a hypocrite. Only a snitch! The OG Teen Titans turned down Beast Boy for the same reason; they got their guardians’ permission because they were adorkable lame Boy Scouts. And, because Beast Boy could not do the same, he was not allowed to join.

It is, admittedly, a very rational thing for a parent to want to know that their child is safe and taken care of. Sometimes being an adult requires being, <sigh>, responsible. How lame. Alas.

Seeing Dick’s compassion for the homeless and mentally ill in Gotham is so refreshing.

Him arguing with Bruce about the ethics of Arkham asylum and the potential for institutional abuse:

His attempts to be gentler towards the mentally ill suspects and criminals — especially when surrounded by parties who refuse to do so

And his kindness when speaking with them directly. There is no patronization or implicit threat on his behalf; he genuinely, sincerely wants to help who he perceives as equal citizens of Gotham, just as deserving of respect and kindness as its wealthier guard.

I’m iffy on other parts of the characterization, because I cannot believe Bruce would be this stubborn at receiving Dick’s argument. However, seeing as Dick’s standoff with the GCPD about the treatment of the mentally ill at the end inspires Bruce to a similarly more compassionate approach, I can forgive it.

I find it so funny that whenever Bruce gets a new kid, the automatic impulse is to give them Dick’s room without telling Dick. This is the ultimate sign of hospitality. The ultimate form of love.

Mind you, there are dozens of empty bedrooms. But not only is Jason given his bedroom, Dick isn’t made aware of this until he visits, as per the first Outlaws: Rebirth annual.

And then, when Tim is adopted in Batman #654, the very first thing Bruce does is give Tim Dick’s room — because, quoting Bruce, “he would want you to live here”.

One, why this bedroom? Why is his bedroom the one that needs to be given when there are half a billion of them? And, two, why can’t you ask him? Or notify him after? What is preventing this?

The whole thing cracks me up every time. It kills me dead.

There is something so bittersweet about Dick and Wally’s interactions during the Dickbats era.

Their friendship and dynamic is as strong as ever. They haven’t fundamentally changed. This is still Wally West and Dick Grayson, childhood best friends and founding Teen Titans.

But they’re also both keenly aware of how much they’ve lost, how much darker their world has become. How could they not when the reminder is constant in the remnants of their mentors? Both killed during a crisis, both with their mantle reluctantly taken after the fact as a burden to carry and a legacy to live up to?

I wonder if they ever look at themselves in the papers or in a reflection and, for a moment, think they’re looking at Barry and Bruce.

The way Foggy's worrying about Matt in the back of the cab bathed in blue and melancholy, only for this push in on his face where he's haloed by red, his inner self-esteem demons almost scratching their way in for a moment of doubt.

And then there's Matt, stoic and heroic backdropped by night scene blues and grays, until the realization of Foggy's impending peril which drops him into a dark black void, worry and fear plain on his face. It's just a single moment before he's leaping into the night again on a mission, followed by the frenzied red of the fight to save his best friend.
