From a Marxist perspective, the most important ‘lack’ in psychoanalytic approaches is the lack of a materialist understanding of the social world. The Marxist cultural critic Raymond Williams once noted that the problem with capitalism is not that it is too materialistic, but that it is not materialistic enough (Williams 1989:185) . What Williams is mobilising here is a rather different sense of the word materialism from its common usage. Normally ‘materialism’ refers to an excessive investment in material things, such as money and consumer goodies. Of course, capitalism does encourage this ‘materialism’, but at the same time it represses that deeper materialism comprised by the web of social relationships and interdependencies that constitute the production and reproduction of human life, including consumer goods. And in this sense, capitalism is not materialistic enough because it actively frustrates our sense of sociality. The social becomes pale, thin; it starts to dematerialise before our eyes, and it becomes, in short, spectral or ghost-like. One only has to consider how inadequate are the responses to capitalism’s destruction of the natural environment on which all human societies depend, to get a sense of how impoverished our sense of collective responsibility has become, even as we stare into the abyss. The spectre then within the horror film offers us a way of getting to grips with this lack in our own social and body politic. I will identify three modes by which the spectre can be understood as a sign of the ghostly, dematerialised quality of life under capitalism.

Hi, Can I ask advice? I’m bi& in my late 20. I’ve dated women in the past but have gone through a dry spell recently...I’m not sure y even tho I regularly feel attracted 2 women it feels hard 2 make dating or a relationship happen. Often it feels like I’m attracted 2 inappropriate ppl I.e my friends, more than I am attracted to random people from dating apps. Turning a friend into a relationship seems kinda impossible &undesirable to me so now I’m kinda interminably gf-less and doubting myself
Oh, I mean yeah mood. Honestly you just gotta put yourself out there and try try try again. Although I did end up getting with my best friend when we realised that we’d been dating for 3 years so I can’t really talk.
Basically, you know yourself that you’re attracted to women, and being nervous about dating is normal, esp. for wuh luh wuh, so just take it slow and listen to your instincts, angel.
