ofc this is to be expected from a tragedy but one thing I love about the love in black sails so much is that a lot of it is either already over or ending and the show spends a lot of time with the question of what comes after. richard siken voice or whoever "sometimes you love someone so much u end up on the other side of them" show thesis.
max and eleanor's break up is the catalyst for arguably most of the entire plot and even though we get so little time with them both being in love there is still so much there in between them after because they still understand each other so well (the whole "that fucking chair" thing/ max saying she learned so much from eleanor and only now that she doesnt love her anymore is able to understand her fully/ them both still knowing exactly which buttons to press or how the other will react etc)
on the topic of eleanor, her existing not only in the aftermath of her love for max but in the aftermath of being loved by her father, a man who could not treasure her bc she was not the child he wanted bc she was not a son, and her growing around that loss and essentially always trying to prove to herself that it didn't matter, that she could do it anyway, when in the end she ultimately couldn't and it never stopped mattering that she was a woman
also vane!!! who only started to really become a revolutionary and joined the pirate cause once he let go of his love for eleanor and replaced it with something bigger, trust in his men and the future that was possible
ofc flint and miranda, existing in the wake of that blonde man's death and forced to deal with the violence they experienced because of it. is there still joy here???? is there still life here???? there could be! (if you worked for it and if you were willing to risk making urself vulnerable there could be. there still is.)
madi, stepping into the void left to her by her father, a stranger who loved her and is now gone and has led a new and hungry world to her doorstep that she now has to navigate without him by using the tools he passed onto her and her mother!
jack, who is losing anne to something he doesn't really understand because even if she will never leave him she won't be part of him like before. who lost vane and tries to keep his memory alive by trying to honour his vision the best way he can and continuing the fight
etc etc like there is so so much that only happens bc people loved each other and then couldn't anymore and it fascinates me
and ofc then u also have silver who comes into the story with no framework for any of this because something happened to him before the story starts that disables him in such a fundamental way that all any of this elicits from him is terror and which ultimately is responsible for the domino effect that will turn all of it into terror for everyone else, too like!!!
Cinderella and Prince Charming dancing in the clouds in these early explorations of the song sequence "So This Is Love" by Mary Blair
the fact that i'm no longer the same age as the protagonists of novels and films i once connected to is so heartbreaking. there was a time when I looked forward to turning their age. i did. and i also outgrew them. i continue to age, but they don't; never will. the immortality of fiction is beautiful, but cruel.
