hi, a quick google search pulled up a good article on the melbourne cup and why it’s such a controversial event. the horse deaths are not exaggerated and it goes into further detail in how these horses are practically abused from a young age to be prepared for racing. i’m not sure how universal these practices are in the world of horse racing but this event is fucked up no matter how you put it.

Hey, here is some accurate information about racing in Victoria. It’s backed by actual research. Unfortunately the Melbourne Cup is hit with a lot of criticism every year which crops up on about the first of November and is forgotten by the 10th until the following year (Cup day is the first Tuesday in November for anyone who isn’t aware). But racing is a 365 day a year industry with horses being looked after and loved by pretty much all participants. - I say ‘pretty much all’ because sadly, like with everything, there is definitely not good people out there, who aren’t in it for the love of horses, and that sucks. The people who hate them the most though, are the people in the industry who have a 3am alarm everyday so they can be at the stables to make sure the horses are looked after. They are also the people who don’t forget when a horse is injured, or even worse, dies. They’re the ones who remember for years, and do their best to stop it from happening again. They’re not in it for money, because they don’t make much - in fact it’s a very small percentage of the industry who makes money out of it, and the ones that do, usually started with money. These people are also backed by an industry and State Body who wants the best for the horses, and industry participants too. The research I’ve linked above is non biased and is ordered by the Victorian State Racing Body, who updates it each year to ensure progress is being made. The information is some welfare facts, the 251 page rules and regulations are also linked here if anyone is curious.
