Ayumi Hamasaki’s 50th single, L, turns 10 today!

The original single came out in a dizzying number of variations with different leading tracks and “orchestra” b-sides (all of which can now be conveniently streamed in one place on Spotify). Three new songs led the release: “Virgin Road,” “Last angel,” and “Sweet Season.” All three had music videos across the various versions of the single and can now be found on Ayu’s Youtube channel.

“Virgin Road” had the distinction of introducing Ayu to her first husband, who co-stars in the “Virgin Road,” “Last angel,” and later “Love song” PVs. After their separation, she revisited the “road” for “Return road”

The single led to the release of a special 50 singles performance compilation–one of Ayu’s few live releases still available for free on Youtube. It also came to represent the end of an era: after over a decade of near-constant releases, Ayu would not release another physical single until 2013′s Merry-go-round/Feel the love.
