2026 Black British Theatre Awards cancelled in ‘devastating’ blow for sector

The Black British Theatre Awards has cancelled its 2026 ceremony, in a move creatives have labelled ‘devastating’ for the industry

I’m currently in my CAD era but I want to also be in my puppetry era and I’m in and out of my sculpting era so imma see if I can merge them. I’ve been trying to do most of my sculpting with reusable oil based clays unless I need to keep it for display and I’ve been trying to minimise how many iterations make it to the print stage and keep all scraps for future projects. I’m hoping my secondhand LiDAR Scanner still works with newer computers.

Saw TADC: The Last Act in 4DX and they really did stick the landing imo

I’ve come to an arrangement that means I can do my plans and free labour so while I’m still unhappy in my circumstances I will make it work. But they better be real aware I’m putting systems in place to track my hours SUPER thoroughly. And if they ever try to leave me alone with certain people it will become a them problem real quick.

So I wanted to look more into this movement, but ironically, I don’t have the time or energy because I just started burnout leave today but have been receiving messages since 7:12am over 11 hours ago from my department head regarding “urgent” major decisions where they’re basically trying to bend my will to get their way, I don’t talk about on this blog because it’s not what I made it for but they just crossed a line with me that if you read my posts is a fairly predictable breaking point.

I’ve only just started to bring myself to discuss this IRL with disability informed theatre practitioners so I won’t go to into detail right at the beginning of this time of healing but my love for theatre and the value I put on receiving an education has been weaponised against me for to long. It’s had a detrimental effect on my health and wellbeing and I would say how I am treated now classifies as emotional abuse.

I am being messed about and they’re coming for many of the things I hold dearest,

1. They’re weaponising the possibility of taking another year of my life from me where my abusers would have complete control of my life, reputation and future prospects and those abusers have made it clear no work will ever be good enough to stop them disparaging me. All this because I took leave off of 1 show cycle where another abusive influence would have far too much access to me.

2. They’re weaponising so many factors including the future prospects of a peer against me to make me “choose” not to work on the only show I requested to work on. They have me the opportunity, took it away, gave it back and now they are forcing my hand because they know I wouldn’t do what they did to me to someone else.

3. They are threatening three of the things outside of me family and friends I care about most my ability to finally see Beetlejuice The Musical in The West End, my ability to see Hemlocke Springs live in concert and my ability to attend valuable industry training in one of my Niche specialisms.

3 might sound silly but if you look back and my blog you’ll see how much those three things have meant to me for YEARS.

I can handle if I end up not seeing Beetlejuice because of Union action that will improve the lives of people like me but I cannot handle not seeing Beetlejuice because the people I’ve given thousands of hours to hoping one day I will be good enough to work on a show even a fraction as meaningful to me as Beetlejuice are trying to stop me seeing it because I dared to say I needed a break from their torment for what can be 12 hours a day) days a week unpaid and unable to get a major chunk of benefits i could get, while studying full time because I refuse to take a student loan but the benefits system calculates it like I took one anyway.

Even as I type this I saw the another email just today coming probably denying all of my thoroughly considered alternative options and I know this day of burn out leave probably isn’t going to be as healing as I hoped for.

Linked it wrong

On a bittersweet note I now have in writing a textbook example of what I mean when I say the staff my department:

- Ignore everything I actually say no matter how painful granular I get about the minute details.

- Cur me off to make up an imaginary unreasonable thing they act like I actually said

- ⁠Get mad at that me for stating I never said the unreasonable thing and trying to clarify

- ⁠switch up the second they realise there’s a witness and say it’s all an innocent misunderstanding between two stressed people in a high pressure environment.

I didn’t get proof of the,

- turn around and loudly rant about me in an incredibly self incriminating way that sometimes borders on menacing

phase but most people don’t believe me how many people really do Super Villain monologue, anyway.

So I wanted to look more into this movement, but ironically, I don’t have the time or energy because I just started burnout leave today but have been receiving messages since 7:12am over 11 hours ago from my department head regarding “urgent” major decisions where they’re basically trying to bend my will to get their way, I don’t talk about on this blog because it’s not what I made it for but they just crossed a line with me that if you read my posts is a fairly predictable breaking point.

I’ve only just started to bring myself to discuss this IRL with disability informed theatre practitioners so I won’t go to into detail right at the beginning of this time of healing but my love for theatre and the value I put on receiving an education has been weaponised against me for to long. It’s had a detrimental effect on my health and wellbeing and I would say how I am treated now classifies as emotional abuse.

I am being messed about and they’re coming for many of the things I hold dearest,

1. They’re weaponising the possibility of taking another year of my life from me where my abusers would have complete control of my life, reputation and future prospects and those abusers have made it clear no work will ever be good enough to stop them disparaging me. All this because I took leave off of 1 show cycle where another abusive influence would have far too much access to me.

2. They’re weaponising so many factors including the future prospects of a peer against me to make me “choose” not to work on the only show I requested to work on. They have me the opportunity, took it away, gave it back and now they are forcing my hand because they know I wouldn’t do what they did to me to someone else.

3. They are threatening three of the things outside of me family and friends I care about most my ability to finally see Beetlejuice The Musical in The West End, my ability to see Hemlocke Springs live in concert and my ability to attend valuable industry training in one of my Niche specialisms.

3 might sound silly but if you look back and my blog you’ll see how much those three things have meant to me for YEARS.

I can handle if I end up not seeing Beetlejuice because of Union action that will improve the lives of people like me but I cannot handle not seeing Beetlejuice because the people I’ve given thousands of hours to hoping one day I will be good enough to work on a show even a fraction as meaningful to me as Beetlejuice are trying to stop me seeing it because I dared to say I needed a break from their torment for what can be 12 hours a day) days a week unpaid and unable to get a major chunk of benefits i could get, while studying full time because I refuse to take a student loan but the benefits system calculates it like I took one anyway.

Even as I type this I saw the another email just today coming probably denying all of my thoroughly considered alternative options and I know this day of burn out leave probably isn’t going to be as healing as I hoped for.

West End workers vote YES for strike action in Equity indicative ballot | Equity

Performers and stage management across the West End have voted overwhelmingly in favour of taking strike action and to back Equity’s claim i

I am happy for them, and I am completely behind him because I’m currently in a place under values me and scuffs the very idea of work life balance but also because it’s me and everything comes back to Beetlejuice I will be using a little bit of my burn out sick leave to check if this effects my odds of seeing it.

Like I’ve got to see a version IRL once which is more than I ever thought I would get but the thought of seeing it again has been one of the things getting me through though times and the idea of other people going through less tough times gets me through even more.

If you told me a year ago I’d be seeing Beetlejuice The Musical and Hemlocke Springs in the same month I would have believed such a dream was even possible. It’s all booked and it’s something to really look forward to.
