#theartassignment Emotional Furniture. 

Confidence, Envy, and Melancholy. Very specific emotions that humans can easily identify, but complex enough to only be understood by our species and those very close (primates). What’s interesting about this project is not the pictures themselves, but the human quality our minds give to them. The humanization of an inanimate object is some strange quality of our pack bong forming brain. Just as we as humans project emotions on to pets or animals, we can project complex emotions onto objects, even objects like a chair, so far removed from living beings its still able to be rendered in a manner that gives off a distinct emotion. That is why i chose this project, it is interesting to me why our minds project these emotions onto other things, and in what situations we would.

Reading Response #4 Pt1

Postmodernism is a response to the ethics of the modern art movement, and a rejection of tradition in the space of a museums. While Modern art sought to change what art could be and replace classical forms with more abstract and impressionistic art, it focused on inner thoughts and still resided within traditional spaces. Postmodernists are the response to modernism, the rejection of the terminology of “high” art “low” art and even “art” as a concept. Especially with the rise of performance art in postmodernist style, the lines between art and life are blurred. Art is taken out into the streets and starts to pervade deeper into ordinary life, art doesn’t have to be so inaccessible according to the postmodern movement. While the modernists held onto ideas of objective truth, community, and faith, postmodernists rejected all of these.

Project #3

Artist Statement: While i would have like to experiment with this project in public, as reactions would be an integral part of the performance, i will follow the rules and regulations outlined by the state in order to curtail this pandemic. My project had to do with fear, specifically of the virus, and combines aspects of fear of the past and the present. Pandemics are nothing new, but are still terrifying. Even though we have advances miles ahead of the “medicine” of the middle ages, people are still in danger and in many ways the fear is the same. Each plague in history has with it brought prejudice, disdain and avoidance of our fellow man. In the distant past, people believed disease was spread through foul odors, and now we know better, but we are still not safe. we wear our masks all the same. History repeats itself no matter how much we try or how much we think we learn.

Reading Response #3

Performance art is a pretty interesting but totally broad subject. Of course theatre could fit this definition but really anything that a human does for the sake of a performance does as well. As opposed to paintings and sculptures, a performance is alive and intimate. The difference between seeing the static work of an artist and actually seeing that artist there, performing their piece, is vast. 

Connection and responsiveness is the essence of a human, and this face to face experience has an essence that other art mediums cannot. A painting could not single highhandedly trigger a riot like Marinetti’s delivery of his manifesto. Of course there are many forms that performance art takes but the most important aspect is the presence of the performer. The essence that they have as a human, responsive and dynamic, has the ability to directly affect an observer emotionally. The act of staring into someones eyes for several long minutes has more power than looking at the eyes of a painted figure. Life holds a certain power which artists are able to use through these emotionally charged

Project #2

For this short video, I wanted to create something supernatural and disturbing. I named this video “Limbic Playground” because it relates to an internal state of emotion, stress and anger that the Limbic system helps to control in the body. I wanted to discuss internal struggle and violence against the self symbolically, to do this I created two characters who both end up wearing the same mask, but one is shown smashed at the end. Two sides of an internal argument, two personalities or desires and only one body. The surreal and otherworldly nature of the video stems from its glitchy quality, parts are deliberately cut up and pieced back in the wrong order. The viewer should come away dizzied and the viewing should feel like they are walking through a k-mart parking lot at 4:30 am and they just saw a dead rat on the sidewalk.

Response #2

Vanishing and Becoming:

This interesting article on projection begins its discussion in the realm of ancient art and what early projections were and how they can be interpreted. Throughout most of the article there is the notion that a projection is that which the phenomenon leaves behind. Like a shadow puppet in front of a flashlight, the image is not what the hand or light is, but rather what the hand removes from it. Thus there can’t be a true representation of anything in this fatalistic approach to projection/ representation, because the fact that what one creates will always be a stitching of “ideological fripperies over the brute reality of the void” (419) or the lack of the phenomenon. However, later in the article Cubitt proposes that projections are a natural way that phenomenon radiate across space and time, and that while a projection is a vanishing point, the eye of the audience is a “becoming” point, where meaning and ideas and events are reconstructed and interpreted in ones own ways. I found that to be the most important point of the article, since art can so easily be seen as a recreation of things in the world but so often people miss out on the possibility that worlds and meanings can be created through art and expression.

Chapter #6

A deeper and more thorough examination of time in art, i found it interesting that there were so many ways that time was manipulated and how many facets of time there were. While some pieces occur over an actual amount of time, some also have an implied time, and i found this aspect of the chapter the most interesting. The ability of an artist to create a piece that distorts the viewers sense of time, or to convey time passing when in reality it is not, would be incredibly useful and impactful, allusions to numerous deep philosophical or moral questions can be made through the passage of time and its alteration as seen in the example “Bunny” provided in this chapter. Not only that, but this implied time can also occur when looking at sequences of photographs or images that take place chronologically, implying that an amount of time occurred between the events that the photos captured.

Project 1

With this project I wanted to showcase the things that make me, me. I used several movies for this. The first gif is from one of my favorite songs, Buttercup by Jack Sauber it has a very nice looking lyric video. Willy Wonka is a movie that shaped my childhood and one I still love today, the tunnel scene in particular is something I’ll never forget watching as a child. The Addams Family TV show is so special to me so I added my favorite scene of Gomez carving a pumpkin, Halloween is also my favorite holiday. Beetlejuice is a movie I quote constantly and have a quote tattooed on me. The Office is a show I’ve seen thousands of times and I can tell an episode just from one scene. Rocky Horror Picture Show is something I can always count on to bring me smile with the outrageous songs and plot. I’m happy in able to share these things in GIFS, each scene chosen was just a particular favorite of mine.

Odd and interesting moments from very nostalgic films. The color schemes all flow together nicely and there is lots of variety in subject matter and color, which is quite nice to see.

I decided to make a series of my favorite movie, The Wolf of Wall Street starring Leonardo DiCaprio.  This movie genre is mainly a comedy so I thought that there were many parts within the film that make for entertaining gifs.  I tried to organize each gif in the order in which they would appear during the movie.  If you haven’t yet seen this movie I recommend you watch it not only for the many humorous jokes but for the enticing financial knowledge as well; and also the overall living life to the fullest message it sends.  If you have seen the film, feel free to repost these gifs and share something you like about this movie!

I enjoy these gifs because they capture a different part of Leo’s acting than i normally see, at least in the movies i see him in. In movies like Inception and Shutter Island he plays a very collected, cerebral role. Its nice to see him so loose and these gifs very much capture those important emotions.

Project 1 ‘Artist’ Statement

Thematically, each of these gifs share at least some commonality. I chose these 10 specifically for the virtual effects of the animations that they show. This is a look into how animation is used to make certain abstract points clear, specifically in music videos. Each gif comes from a music video of a song i personally enjoy, and find meaning in, each of them also thematically relate to one another in a very important manner. Each animation or effect is a surreal addition to reality, and is symbolic of the abstract idea or emotion that each song aims to convey.

I like this gif because it uses minimal shapes and contours to create its subject which just turns to create the effect of a meteor falling or a comet orbiting.
