Are Princess Carolyn's actions selfless or selfish?
I was rewatching 'The view from halfway down' when the conversation of sacrifice came up which really made me think of PC.
Corduroy said that if you do a selfless act and get pleasure out of it it's inherently selfish, while Herb claimed that why would it matter if you get pleasure out of a selfless act which really made me think of PC's actions through out the show.
PC's morality is pretty questionable in the show, as she arguably does some pretty shitty things as an agent and later a manager, like profiting off serious issues but in her personal life she's a genuine person that actually cares and tries to help the people around her.
A known trait of hers is helping people when she can't cope with her own problems. There's endless examples in the show and my personal favourite is when PC helps Bojack cook food for the critic that was in his restaurant. Ever she herself admits that Bojack let her help because he knows that is what will make her feel better.
I think that this also ties to her childhood, as she was the last one of her siblings to leave home staying behind to take care of her mother and cover for her at work. In 'The view from halfway down' Bojack says something that I think really fits PC. He claims that if you come from a household where you constantly sacrifice everything you have and get out in the real world and do something to make yourself happy it feels selfish.
I personally agree with Herbs statement that there's nothing wrong with getting pleasure from doing a selfless act, though I can definitely understand Corduroy's opinion as doing a selfless act for selfish reasons can feel condescending. Was it really a selfless act if it was for a selfish reason?
I've been really thinking about this and I honestly don't have a solid answer. Doing a kind act for my own pleasure is it really still a kind act?
